A blush pink window seat cushion with burgundy piping, sized to its nook

Three buyers asked about piping, pets and backs, so Rosa answers them first. Then she reads how this blush seat splits the work of comfort between thickness, wedges and pillows.

Burgundy piping gives a soft blush fabric a crisp edge and keeps it from looking too sweet.

The quick answer

A well-proportioned window seat cushion shares the work of comfort between thickness, back support and depth. Here a neat, box-edged blush seat sits between tall wedge end backrests, with a pillow tucked in front for the lower back. On window seats, 3 in (8 cm) is a solid middle ground; 2 in is slim, 4 and 5 in are plumper, and every inch raises the seat.

Pull up a chair: three questions before the reading

  1. A common question

Can I have a contrasting piping color, and does it have to come from the same fabric chart as the cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, pick any color on the fabric charts for the piping, and contrast piping can come from a different chart than the cushion fabric. The piping colors are the same charts shown in the listing images, more than 150 options, so write the cushion code and the piping code when you order.

  2. A common question

Will the linen hold up to a dog or two jumping onto the window seat?

    The workshop's answer

The linen is a natural-look fabric. For homes with dogs or cats the shop recommends its pet-friendly collection, which holds up much better to claws, jumping and everyday pet wear and is easier to clean. It suggests the same for a bay window where a dog likes to lie.

  3. A common question

Do you make seat and back cushions for a built-in breakfast nook?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send the size of each seat run and each back section. An L-shaped seat is made as two pieces that meet at the corner, and back pillows are separate rectangles, for example 18 in (46 cm) tall and 3 in (8 cm) deep, which can be in a complementary fabric.

Now, the reading

Reading the nook: who does the work of comfort

Every inch of cushion is an inch of seat height, and a window seat is where folks forget it.

This one gets it right. A blush pink window seat cushion in a linen-look fabric sits on a cream-painted nook built over shaker drawers with cup pulls and knobs. The seat is a neat box edge, not a puffy mattress, so it rests on the cabinet top like it was born there.

Now look at the ends. Two blush wedge backrests stand tall at each side, the way the arms of an old porch rocker hold you in. That's where the comfort lives. On a deep window seat your back can't be on the wall and your knees at the edge at the same time, so a pillow sits in front of the wedge and brings the backrest forward to meet you.

Then the piping. Every edge wears a burgundy welt, and it isn't a random pick: it matches the old leather spines of the vintage hardbacks on the sill. Blush alone can look sugary, and the wine line gives it a grown-up edge. Take your accent from something already in the room and it looks found, not forced.

A white mug on the sill says somebody sits here with coffee. A linen tea towel draped over one drawer breaks up the long run of cabinet fronts. A gray flatweave rug keeps the floor quiet under all that rosy daylight.

So, neighbor, how high is your window seat before the cushion goes on? Measure it, then try the seat height calculator and the window seat thickness guide before you pick a number.

Thickness against the seat: 2, 3, 4 or 5 inches

ThicknessHow it looksWhat it does to the seat
2 in (5 cm)A slim, low-profile padRaises the seat least and lets the backs carry the comfort
3 in (8 cm)Fuller, yet still sits neatlyA solid middle ground for window seats and benches
4 in (10 cm)Noticeably plumperThe standard on corduroy and linen bench cushions, and it can be changed
5 in (13 cm)The plumpest option offeredAdds the most height, so check knees and sill first

A real project

Five backs, one notch and a parcel that came second

One buyer wrote in while building a kitchen bench, with the wall about to be repainted dark blue. They needed one long seat, 85 3/8 x 19 5/8 in (217 x 50 cm), and an L-shaped piece, 27 1/2 x 19 5/8 in (70 x 50 cm), with a notch of 4 3/8 x 20 7/8 in (11 x 53 cm) cut from one corner to clear the frame. Along the wall went five back cushions, each about 11 3/4 in (30 cm) high and 19 5/8 in (50 cm) wide.

The shop asked for a photo of the space, quoted the whole set with the backrests, and set it up through the custom-size listing in emerald. The seats came first and looked great, but the backs had been left out. The shop made them and shipped them on their own.

Here's the lesson I keep on my fridge: draw every notch and cutout on the sketch, and list each backrest as its own line item. More on cutouts in notched cushions for posts and casings.

Questions buyers ask next

Does a thicker cushion make a window seat more comfortable?

Not always. Every inch of thickness raises the seat an inch, and on window seats 3 in (8 cm) is a solid middle ground: fuller than a 2 in (5 cm) pad, neater than a plump 4 in (10 cm). Good back support often does more than extra foam.

What do wedge end backrests do on a window seat?

Tall wedges at each end act like the arms of a chair, so the seat feels enclosed and you can lean into one end with your legs along the cushion. A pillow in front of the wedge adds lower-back support.

Why pair burgundy piping with blush pink?

Blush alone can look sugary. A deep wine welt outlines every edge and gives the soft color a grown-up line. Here it also matches the leather spines of the old books on the sill, so the accent looks like it belongs.

How do I order an L-shaped bench cushion with a notch?

Send a photo of the space and a sketch with every notch and cutout drawn and measured. List each back cushion as its own line item; in one project the backs were left out of the first shipment and had to follow separately.
