Custom dog bed cushions, cat corners and the nooks pets pick themselves

Pets pick the spot and the cushion follows. Ten beds, pads and cat corners buyers ordered from the workshop, with the inches and the fabric that made them last.

The quick answer

A custom dog bed cushion is a pad cut to the spot the pet already uses, in a washable pet-friendly fabric with a zip-off cover. Real orders run from a 16 x 20 x 2 in (41 x 51 x 5 cm) dog-house pad to a 24 x 24 x 12 in (61 x 61 x 30 cm) velvet cat cushion. A water-repellent inner liner helps protect the foam.

The dog already picked the spot

Nobody has ever talked a dog into a bed. The dog picks the spot, by the heat vent or under the stairs, and the cushion either agrees or gets ignored.

On my grandmother's porch the hound had the best cushion on the swing, and nobody argued. Pet owners still ask three things: what size, which fabric, and will it wash. A custom dog bed cushion answers all three before the first cut.

The ten below are real pet-friendly cushions and floor cushions, cut to where the animals already sleep. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, neighbor, and dogs file their reports with their teeth.

So where does your dog sleep when nobody is watching?

Ten pet builds

  1. 01A past project

Two dog-house pads with water-repellent liners

A buyer in the US ordered two cushions for an insulated dog house, 16 x 20 x 3 in (41 x 51 x 7.5 cm) and 16 x 20 x 2 in (41 x 51 x 5 cm), and asked how to protect the foam. The workshop added a water-repellent inner cover to each and made everything together.

The takeaway: Where wet paws or damp can reach, put a water-repellent liner between the cover and the foam.

  2. 02A past project

A rounded-corner dog bed with rust piping

A buyer got in touch for a dog cushion about 31.5 x 17.7 x 3 in (80 x 45 x 7.5 cm) with slightly rounded corners: firm, washable, slow to fade, light brown with rust or dark brown piping. The workshop pointed to its pet-friendly chart, washable up to 86°F (30°C), and suggested a beige body with rust-brown piping.

The takeaway: Darker contrast piping hides wear on the edges, right where a dog rests its chin.

  3. 03A past project

    A 12 in velvet cushion for a cat's corner

A buyer wrote to the workshop for a white or ivory velvet cat cushion, 25 x 25 in and 12 in high, for the cat's favorite corner, and pointed to a lower listing price. That price was for a 6 in cushion. Height roughly doubles the fill, and the final order was 24 x 24 x 12 in (61 x 61 x 30 cm) with no back cushion.

The takeaway: Compare pet cushions by all three numbers; the height sets the fill.

  4. 04A past project

Bench cushions and two dog beds, matched to the paint

    A buyer wrote in wanting two bench cushions, about 72 x 17.3 in (183 x 44 cm) and 48.2 x 18.1 in (122.5 x 46 cm), in a pink-flecked taupe photographed against two heritage paint colors. Two dog beds followed, 23.4 x 30.7 in (59.5 x 78 cm) and 20.3 x 30.7 in (51.5 x 78 cm), in a pet fabric. When that fabric was discontinued, a very similar pet-suitable one replaced it, with a real-life photo before shipping.

The takeaway: Ask to see the fabric photographed next to the paint before anything is cut.

  5. 05A past project

A floor sofa kept low after surgery

A buyer wrote in after ordering a mustard corduroy floor sofa. The dog had just had surgery and could not jump onto high furniture, so one cushion would go low on the floor and the other into storage. The cushions travel vacuum-packed, which made the spare easy to put away.

The takeaway: Low seating needs no jump. Covers zip off to wash; the white non-slip bases stay out of the machine.

  6. 06A past project

    One chewed backrest, replaced alone

A dog ripped one backrest on a floor sofa, and the owner could not stretch to a whole new set. The workshop set up a private link for one straight middle backrest, with filling, in off-white corduroy.

The takeaway: Modular seating lets you replace only the piece the dog got to.

  7. 07A past project

A foster dog, a back cushion and a chaise

Two more past orders. A foster dog tore a back cushion 23 x 20 x 6.5 in (58 x 51 x 16.5 cm), and the owner needed just that one piece. Another dog ate the chaise section of a sofa, and only that cover was needed.

The takeaway: Keep the size of every piece written down somewhere safe. When one goes, you order one.

  8. 08A past project

For dogs that jump up and stay

Buyers in the US write about two boxers whose faces will be on the cushion, or a French bulldog that jumps up all day. Linen is a natural-look fabric, not the first pick for dogs. The pet-friendly collection holds up better to claws and jumping and cleans more easily; by a door where big dogs pass all day, outdoor fabric is the rugged choice.

The takeaway: Choose dog fabric for claws and jumping first, color second.

  9. 09A past project

    Cats, buttons and zippers

Buyers in the US with cats and shedding dogs ask tufted or plain. Every cover comes off to wash except on button-tufted pieces. If the cats pull buttons, order as usual and ask for no buttons; the cushion is made untufted with a zippered cover and piping.

The takeaway: Skip tufting where pets live, or keep the spare buttons and re-sew a loose one early.

  10. 10A past project

A bed for one person and one large dog

Some beds are for two. A buyer got in touch wanting a cushion bed for the owner and one large dog, and 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) was suggested, longer and wider on request. A thick seat-only floor cushion, 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) in linen, also works as a dog bed on its own.

The takeaway: If the dog shares the reading spot, size the bed for both of you.

Rosa's front-step list before a pet bed is cut

  • Measure the spot the pet already uses: length, width and thickness, in inches, on a sketch.
  • Ask for a water-repellent inner liner wherever wet paws, accidents or damp can reach the foam.
  • Choose from the pet-friendly chart; zip-off covers wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle.
  • Go untufted. Button-tufted covers cannot come off, and cats find buttons.
  • Put darker contrast piping on the edges that take the wear.
  • For a tall cat cushion, compare heights: 12 in takes roughly twice the fill of 6 in.
  • Keep the white non-slip base out of the washer and wipe it by hand.

Custom dog bed cushion sizes start with the spot, not the dog: a 16 x 20 in dog house takes a 16 x 20 in cushion.

What goes inside, and what goes on top

Floor-sofa seats use a medium-hard, high-density cold foam, most often quoted as T28, about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³), which softens a little with use. Backrests hold shredded foam in their own inner cover, so the outer cover comes off for the wash. The foam firmness finder sorts out the rest.

On top, the pet-friendly fabrics come first. Velvet is the most stain-resistant of the regular range; corduroy resists claws but holds on to hair. Maggie's pet-friendly banquettes carry the same thinking to the kitchen, and the modular floor sofas keep every seat low.

Paws on the furniture:

  1. A common question

Can you make a dog bed or a cat cushion to my measurements, and which fabric would you use?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Dog beds are cut to any size on a custom order link, with rounded corners, contrast piping or fabric matched to your bench cushions. The workshop recommends its pet-friendly chart, washable up to 86°F (30°C), for example a beige body with rust-brown piping. Thick velvet cat cushions, about 24 to 25 in square and 12 in high, are made too, and a discontinued pet fabric is replaced with a very similar in-stock one.

  2. A common question

Does pet hair stick to the corduroy floor sofa, and will the cats scratch it up?

    The workshop's answer

Corduroy is hard for pets to scratch, and the covers come off for the washing machine, so the workshop calls it pet friendly. Pet hair does cling to it, though. If that bothers you, the covers can be made in faux leather in several colors; its slight sheen and wavy grain look lighter in strong light and deeper in soft light.

  3. A common question

With a shedding dog in the house, is a tufted cushion or a zippered one the better buy?

    The workshop's answer

Zippered. Every cover comes off and washes except on button-tufted pieces, which stay closed. For a shedding dog or a toddler, the workshop suggests an untufted cushion with a removable zippered cover and piping. If cats pull the buttons, order the tufted design and ask for it without buttons; it will be made untufted.

  4. A common question

The floor sofa has a white fabric underneath. Does that go in the wash with the covers?

    The workshop's answer

No. The white underside is the anti-slip layer that stops the cushions sliding, and it must never go in the washing machine. Unzip it first, wash only the colored covers, armrest covers included, at 86°F (30°C), and wipe the non-slip piece by hand, pets or no pets. A little white dust at first should stop over time.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a dog bed cushion be?

Real orders run from 2 in (5 cm) for a dog-house pad to 3 in (7.5 cm) for a firm rounded-corner bed and about 4 in (10 cm) for a nook under the stairs. Tall cat cushions go to 12 in (30 cm), roughly double the fill of a 6 in (15 cm) one.

Why is a tall cat cushion priced so differently from a short one?

Because height, not footprint, sets the fill. A 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) velvet cat cushion at 12 in (30 cm) holds roughly twice the fill of the same square at 6 in (15 cm), so compare listings by all three numbers.

Is a floor sofa a good choice for a dog that can't jump?

It can be. A floor sofa keeps the seat close to the ground, so there is nothing to leap onto. One owner whose dog was recovering from surgery used a single cushion low and stored the second; the covers zip off to wash, without the white non-slip bases.

Which fabric suits a cushion by the back door where big dogs come and go?

For the roughest, busiest indoor spot, such as an entry where big dogs pass all day, the workshop suggests outdoor fabric as the rugged choice. Elsewhere, the pet-friendly chart handles claws, jumping and everyday wear and cleans more easily than linen.
