The Cutting Table · a common question

Can I vacuum-pack a foam cushion again to send it back?

Also asked as:I'm not familiar with vacuum packingIs there a place I can take this?

You can get most of the air out at home. You can't get it back to the flat slab it arrived as, so check the cushion properly before you decide.

The quick answer

Yes, roughly: put the cushion in a large vacuum storage bag and pull the air out with a household vacuum, or let a pack-and-ship store compress and box it. Home packing won't match the workshop's machine compression, so before any return, let the cushion expand fully, pull it from both ends and measure again.

Check the cushion before you pack anything

Your cushion came flat because a machine squeezed it and sealed it before it left. Once that bag is cut, the same press isn't coming to your kitchen. Home packing gets close. It never gets that flat.

So be sure first. Plenty of cushions that look short on day one are still waking up. Give the foam its full expansion, pull it from both ends, then measure against your order. The first 72 hours Pattern walks through it hour by hour.

Packing a foam cushion at home

  1. Wait out the recovery

Most cushions regain shape in 24 to 48 hours. Allow 48 to 72 hours, and up to 3 to 5 days, before you judge size.

  2. Bag it

Slide the cushion into a large vacuum storage bag, the kind sold as a space bag, and close the seal.

  3. Draw the air out

Put a household vacuum on the valve and pull until the bag goes tight around the foam.

  4. Box it

Find a box that fits the compressed shape. If nothing fits, a pack-and-ship store can compress it and size a box for you.

Why squeeze it at all

Because air is expensive to ship. A foam cushion at full size fills a big box, and vacuum packing cuts the return cost significantly. The foam doesn't mind a short squeeze in transit; that is how it reached you. Just don't leave it sealed for months. Vacuum packing is a travel state, not a storage plan.

Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a carrier's size chart. Which is closer to you, friend: a store that sells space bags, or a pack-and-ship counter?

If you can't vacuum-pack a foam cushion at home, a pack-and-ship store can compress it and find a box the right size for the return.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

How do I vacuum-pack a foam cushion so the return costs less to ship?

    The workshop's answer

Buy a large vacuum storage (space) bag, put the cushion in and pull the air out with a household vacuum cleaner. Or take it to a pack-and-ship store, which can compress it and find a box the right size.

  2. A common question

How is the cushion packed when it's delivered?

    The workshop's answer

It is vacuum-compressed and boxed. After unpacking, give it time to expand and pull it from both ends before measuring. Once opened, it can't be compressed at home as tightly as the machine did, which matters if you might return it.

  3. A common question

My cushion arrived flat and thin. How long until it fills out?

    The workshop's answer

Usually 24 to 48 hours. Allow 48 to 72 hours, and up to 3 to 5 days, before judging; pulling, shaking and kneading speed it up. If a piece still hasn't filled out, send photos and the workshop sends a replacement.

  4. A common question

Doesn't vacuum packing ruin the foam?

    The workshop's answer

No. Short compression in transit doesn't damage foam, and cushions return to full shape once opened. It's done because shipping bulky cushions at full size is very expensive. Just don't leave one sealed for months.

Questions buyers ask next

How long should I wait before measuring a vacuum-packed cushion?

Most cushions recover in 24 to 48 hours. Allow 48 to 72 hours, and up to 3 to 5 days, and pull the cushion from both ends before the tape measure comes out. A day-one measurement is not a fair one.

Will a home-packed cushion get as small as the box it came in?

No. The workshop compresses cushions by machine, and a household vacuum can't match that once the original bag is opened. Expect a bundle far smaller than the full-size cushion but larger than the one that arrived.

Why does compressing a cushion lower the return cost?

Shipping a bulky foam cushion at full size is expensive, because most of the box is air. Vacuum packing shrinks it a great deal, which cuts return shipping cost significantly.
