Why 4 in (10 cm) is the default

Four inches is the workshop's standard for bench, window seat and floor cushions, and most buyers keep it. On a tufted floor cushion, the linen French-style cushion, it is densely filled, so it takes years to flatten.

Go thinner, 3-4 in, when legs need to fit under a low table; that also lowers the price. Go thicker when you want to sit higher or sleep on it. The floor cushion thickness Pattern and the seat height calculator do the arithmetic. How tall is the low table you'll sit at, partner?

Match the thickness to the job

  • Low-table seating: 3-4 in, so legs fit underneath
  • Everyday floor seating: the standard 4 in (10 cm)
  • A deeper reading-nook seat: 5 in, made to order
  • Plush floor seating: velvet at about 6 in, or 8 in to order
  • Sleeping on the floor: a 6-8 in (15-20 cm) floor mattress
  • The tallest seat in the range: the 12 in (30 cm) deep-base floor couch

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

How thick is the tufted floor cushion, and can it go thicker?

    The workshop's answer

The standard is 4 in (10 cm), and thickness can be customized: one buyer ordered 6 in (15 cm), and a 12 in tufted cushion is also made. Widths such as 24 or 28 in (60 or 70 cm) can be made too.

  2. A common question

Can you make the floor cushions thicker or thinner than standard?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The linen French cushion is about 4-5 in thick, the velvet floor cushion 6 in as standard and 8 in to order, the deep-base sofa cushion about 12 in (30 cm), and floor mattresses 6 in (15 cm) with 8 in (20 cm) available. Thinner, such as 3 in, is possible.

  3. A common question

Can the seat of the tufted reading-nook set be thicker than 4 in?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The nook set is 4 in, with a backrest around 4 in as standard. A 5 in seat is custom work; in the case discussed, the workshop made it at the standard listing price.

  4. A common question

How thick is the tufted linen cushion, and will it stay that thick?

    The workshop's answer

About 4 in (10 cm), and it can be made thicker. It is densely filled, so it takes years to flatten.

Questions buyers ask next

Is 4 in the standard for other cushion types too?

Yes. 4 in (10 cm) is standard for bench, window seat and floor cushions, and most buyers keep it. Other thicknesses from about 2 in up to 12 in are made to order, and thicker than standard costs more.

Which thickness do most buyers end up choosing?

Most pick 3 or 4 in. 4 in (10 cm) is the standard for everyday seating, while 3 in (7.5 cm) gives a neater, lower profile. Firm 32-density foam keeps even 2-2.5 in supportive.

Is a thinner floor cushion cheaper?

Yes. Making a seat thinner, such as 3-4 in so legs fit under a low table, lowers the price, while going thicker than the standard 4 in (10 cm) costs more.
