The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

Can I stack two floor cushions for a higher seat instead of buying one thick one?

Yes, and the arithmetic is on your side, partner. Thickness is where the price climbs, so two standard pieces often beat one tall one.

The quick answer

Yes, you can stack floor cushions for a higher seat, and it is often cheaper: swapping 12 in seats for two stacked 6 in (15 cm) cushions cut one buyer's quote by about a third. For a seat about 19.7 in (50 cm) high, two 9.8 in (25 cm) cushions were proposed, and a foam base can also go under a tufted top.

Key facts

  • Cushion height is made to need; two stacked cushions can replace one extra-thick cushion.
  • Two stacked 6 in (15 cm) cushions replaced 12 in (30 cm) seats and cut a quote by about a third.
  • Lowering thickness to 6 or 8 in is the main way to reduce the price.
  • Two stacked 9.8 × 27.6 × 70.9 in (25 × 70 × 180 cm) cushions give a seat about 19.7 in (50 cm) high.
  • A foam base can go under a tufted cushion for extra height.
  • A seat about 17.7 in (45 cm) high was built from an 11.8 in (30 cm) foam base and a 5.9 in (15 cm) tufted top.

Message one: “Could we do two 6 inch cushions and stack them?”

Yes. A buyer in the US had 12 in (30 cm) seats on the quote. Swapping each seat for two stacked 6 in (15 cm) cushions, with 4 in (10 cm) backrests, brought the total down by about a third.

The workshop's advice in that thread: reducing thickness to 6 or 8 in is the main way to lower the price, because a 12 in cushion costs considerably more.

Follow-up: a foam base under a tufted top

A stack doesn't have to be two identical pieces. For a fuller seat the workshop proposed a plain foam base with a tufted cushion on top: 11.8 in (30 cm) of base, 5.9 in (15 cm) of tufting, about 17.7 in (45 cm) in all. The tufted top keeps the look; the base does the lifting.

Thickness is the main price lever on a floor cushion: dropping from 12 in to 6 or 8 in, or stacking two 6 in pieces, lowers the quote.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can I stack two thinner cushions instead of buying one 12 inch cushion to save money?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A 12 in cushion costs considerably more, so one quote came down by about a third with two 6 in seat cushions per seat and 4 in backrests. Reducing thickness to 6 or 8 in is the main way to lower the price.

  2. A common question

How tall can a floor cushion be? I want to use it as a sofa.

    The workshop's answer

As tall as you need. For a seat about 19.7 in (50 cm) high, the workshop proposed two stacked cushions, each 9.8 in (25 cm) thick.

  3. A common question

The floor sofa seat is too low. How can I raise it?

    The workshop's answer

The seat is about 13.5 to 14.5 in high. Stack an extra seat cushion or base mattresses, or add a custom 4 to 5 in layer, to reach about 19 in. Floor sofas stay low by design.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick is a standard tufted floor cushion?

About 4 in (10 cm), sometimes 4 to 5 in. The velvet floor seat is about 6 in and the floor-couch model 12 in; any of them can be made thinner or thicker.

Is there a surcharge for a 6 in cushion?

Yes, a modest one. Thicker foam costs more, so cushions of 6, 7 and 8 in (15, 18 and 20 cm) are priced above the thinner sizes, and the difference has been settled by a small extra payment link.

How thick can one custom cushion be?

Standard options top out around 5 to 6 in, but custom cushions go up to about 15.5 in (40 cm). For a 9.8 in (25 cm) piece, two 4.9 in cushions can be ordered and noted as one piece.
