Can I get a tufted bench cushion with a zipper so I can wash the cover?

Every family that eats breakfast on a bench asks this sooner or later, neighbor. The honest answer is a fork in the road, and both roads are good ones.

The quick answer

No, a tufted bench cushion can't also have a removable zippered cover, so you choose one or the other. French-style tufted cushions are made without a zipper, while plain boxed, untufted foam cushions come with zippered covers that come off. A tufted cushion also can't get a replacement cover later; it has to be remade. Linen and linen-cotton work for both.

Choose tufted if…

  • You want the buttoned, French-style look on the bench.
  • You're content to clean the cover where it sits, without taking it off.
  • You accept that a worn cover means a new cushion, not a new cover.

Choose plain boxed if…

  • The cover has to come off and go in the wash.
  • Kids, dogs and maple syrup share the bench.
  • You may want a fresh cover someday without buying new foam.

Why buttons and a zipper can't share one cushion

Tufting is sewn through the cover and the filling together. That's what draws the buttons down into those soft dimples, and it's also why the cover can't slide off: it's stitched to what's inside. A zipper would open onto a cushion that won't let go.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, so I ask every family what their bench goes through on a Saturday morning. If the answer involves pancakes, I point them to a plain box cushion with a zipper. If it's a quiet entry bench, tufting earns its keep. Either way the linen and cotton-linen fabrics are on the table, and the tufted vs. plain pattern sets the two side by side. What happens on your bench on a Saturday?

A French-style tufted bench cushion is made without a zipper; a plain boxed foam cushion has one, so its cover comes off for washing.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

I love the tufted bench cushions but need to wash the covers. Can they have zippers?

    The workshop's answer

Not both at once. Tufted French-style cushions can't take a zipper, so it's tufted with no zipper, or a plain boxed style with a zipper and removable cover. Linen and linen-cotton from the color chart work for either.

  2. A common question

If my tufted cushion's cover wears out, can you send just a new cover?

    The workshop's answer

No. Tufted cushions are made without a zipper, so the cover can't be replaced on its own; the whole cushion has to be remade. Untufted foam cushions are the ones with zippered covers.

  3. A common question

Could you sew a new cover for my old button-tufted cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Not a tufted one: the tufting goes through the filling, so it can't be done on a cover alone, and a plain cover fits poorly over a tufted cushion. A new foam cushion in the exact shape is the better route.

  4. A common question

Can you make a washable zippered cover for a crash pad?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Fully zippered, machine-washable box covers are made for play mats and crash pads up to at least 61 x 61 x 10 in, with a long zipper for easy removal. Give the exact size and fabric code.

Questions buyers ask next

Can I add buttons to a plain zippered cushion myself?

Some buyers go that way: plain zippered covers can be ordered, and for a tufted look you'd add the buttons yourself. The workshop sells its tufted cushions filled only, because the tufting runs through the filling.

Which fabrics can a tufted bench cushion be made in?

Linen and linen-cotton from the color chart are available for tufted and plain bench cushions alike, so the fabric doesn't decide the style. The zipper question does.

What does French-style mean on a bench cushion?

It's the tufted style, with buttons pulled through the cushion to make soft dimples. French-style cushions are made without a zipper, which is the trade-off against the plain boxed style with a removable cover.
