The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

I measured wrong and ordered the wrong size. What are my options?

Pull up a chair, neighbor. Everybody mismeasures once. What matters is when you catch it, and there are kinder fixes than a return.

The quick answer

If you ordered the wrong size cushion, tell the workshop before production, while the size can still be changed or the order canceled. Once it's made, a measuring mistake is the buyer's, so a return is at your cost. Past buyers were offered the right size at cost or a discount on the reorder, without sending the first one back.

Key facts

  • Before production, sizes can be adjusted or the order canceled.
  • A buyer's measuring mistake isn't a fault, so a return is at the buyer's expense.
  • Past offers were a new cushion in the correct size at cost, or a discount on the reorder.
  • The first cushion does not have to be sent back for a reorder.
  • Complaints are checked against the schematic the buyer approved.
  • Small filler cushions, such as 7.5 in (19 cm) seat and back pieces at each end, can close a gap.

A real project

The bench cushion that came up 15 inches short

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a 70 in space for a bench cushion and a cushion about 15 in too short. The tape had been wrong, and the question was whether to send it back and reorder.

Return shipping is expensive, and return labels aren't provided. So the workshop suggested something gentler: two 7.5 in seat pieces and two 7.5 in back pieces, one of each at either end, at a reduced price. The main cushion stays centered and the gap closes.

Measured
70 in (178 cm) space; cushion about 15 in (38 cm) short
What it taught
Filler pieces at both ends can rescue a short bench cushion without a return.

Caught it before production?

Then you're in luck. Message right away: before cutting starts, the size can be adjusted or the order canceled, and accidental orders are refunded to the original payment method.

When did you last measure the bench with the old cushion off? The bench measuring pattern walks the tape along the right edges.

Already made? What the workshop has offered

A measuring mistake isn't the workshop's fault, so a return is on the buyer. In past cases, the workshop's offers have tended to be kinder:

  • The right size made at cost, with no need to send the first one back.
  • A discount on the reorder.
  • A corrected piece at production cost, if you approved a schematic with the wrong number.

The remake guide covers wrong colors too.

A cushion size mistake caught before production can still be changed; after production, past buyers had the right size remade at cost or at a reduced price.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

I ordered the wrong thickness. What can I do?

    The workshop's answer

Place a new order in the right size. When a buyer needed 2 in instead of 4 in, the workshop refunded part of the price on each order.

  2. A common question

I measured wrong and the cushion is too short. Can I return it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, but for a buyer's measuring mistake the buyer pays for the return shipping. The workshop can also make a new one in the right size at cost, and before production it can adjust sizes or cancel instead.

  3. A common question

One of my cushions arrived shorter than I wanted. Will you remake it?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop first checks the schematic you approved. When a buyer had approved dimensions 23 in shorter on one piece, the correct length was offered if the buyer covered the production cost of the new piece.

Questions buyers ask next

Do I have to send the wrong cushion back to get the right size?

No. In past cases the workshop made the correct size at cost, or at a discount on the reorder, without asking for the first cushion back.

How long do I have to return a cushion I mismeasured?

Check the return window shown with your order, but for a buyer's measuring mistake the return and its shipping are at the buyer's cost, and return labels aren't provided, so a reorder or filler pieces are often simpler.

What if the workshop got the size wrong, not me?

Let the foam recover for 3 to 4 days, then send tape-measure photos of length, width and thickness. The workshop checks its production records against your order. In past cases its own errors were remade, and ordering errors were remade at the buyer's cost.
