The Cutting Table · a common question

My cushion arrived the wrong size. Will you remake it?

Also asked as:We ordered 44 inches but got 36.They made one 6 inches short.

A cushion that comes 8 in (20 cm) short of a 44 in (112 cm) bench is a sorry sight on any porch, neighbor. Here is how the workshop sets it right, and what to send first.

The quick answer

A cushion that arrives the wrong size starts with one photo: a tape measure along the full length, sent to the workshop with your ordered size. Ask the workshop to confirm in writing what it will do, and keep that message. In past cases only the pieces that didn't fit were remade, or a partial refund was offered instead.

What counts as the workshop's mistake

The workshop has seen a whole shelf of these. A bench cushion delivered at 54 in (137 cm) when 57 in (145 cm) was ordered. One at 36 in (91 cm) for a 44 in (112 cm) bench. A pair made 24 x 40 in (61 x 102 cm) instead of 16 x 40 in (41 x 102 cm).

Each was remade, and each buyer kept the first cushion. Swapped body and piping colors and split seams go the same way; for a stain, wash the cover at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle first.

So, what does your tape say? The remake Pattern covers the cases that aren't size.

Reporting it in three moves

  1. Lay the tape the full length

End to end along the wrong dimension, both ends in the photo.

  2. Send it with your order size

Photo and ordered size in one message.

  3. Pick your fix

In past cases: a remake of what didn't fit, with a new piping color optional, or a partial refund.

A real project

The floor couch that came 10 inches long

A buyer in the US ordered a floor couch at 35 x 40 in (89 x 102 cm) and opened a 35 x 50 in (89 x 127 cm) one. The first reply offered a second piece at a discount. The buyer pointed out, kindly and correctly, that the error was the workshop's.

That settled it. A new seat cushion and backrest were made free, the original set stayed on the living room floor, and the armrests, which fit, were never remade.

A cushion made 36 in long for a 44 in bench was the workshop's error, so that remake was made free and the short cushion stayed with the buyer.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

My cushions came in the wrong size, and the colors are swapped too. Can you fix it?

    The workshop's answer

Send a photo of each problem the day the box opens, with the size and colors you ordered. In past cases the workshop remade pieces made 24 x 40 in instead of 16 x 40 in, and covers with the main and piping colors reversed.

  2. A common question

My cushion is 3 inches shorter than I ordered. Will you replace it?

    The workshop's answer

In past cases, yes. Send a photo with a tape measure along the full length. When 54 in arrived instead of 57 in, it was remade at the ordered size, with a new piping color offered.

  3. A common question

It's only 2 inches short. Do I have to wait for a new one?

    The workshop's answer

Buyers have chosen between keeping it with a partial refund and having a new one made at the correct size. In this case a 20 x 40 in cushion was remade.

Questions buyers ask next

Who pays shipping on a remade wrong-size cushion?

It depends on whose error it was. Past remakes for workshop size errors went out by FedEx with tracking; twice a first reply raised reshipping costs, and once the error was confirmed, the replacement was sent anyway.

Can I keep a wrong-size cushion and get money back instead?

Often, yes: if the piece is still useful to you, a partial refund has been offered in place of a remake, and buyers who chose the remake kept the first cushion anyway.

What if the size is right but the piping and body colors are swapped?

Report it the same way as a size error: a clear photo to the workshop with the colors you ordered. In past cases the cover was remade. Say which color was meant for the body and which for the piping.
