The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

Can I still machine wash a cushion cover with a non-slip base?

Also asked as:Still machine washable with the non-slip base?Can I wash a cover with a non-slip bottom?

A grippy underside and a velvet top can share one wash. They only ask for a cool cycle, and no heat afterward.

The quick answer

Yes, a zippered cushion cover with a non-slip base stays machine washable, velvet included. Wash it at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle and skip the tumble dryer, because the non-slip backing doesn't tolerate the dryer. Rubberized backing can shed a few particles in the drum, so air dry the cover, shake it out and run a lint roller over it.

Before the cover goes in

  • Unzip the cover and slide the insert out
  • If the non-slip layer unzips on its own, as on the floor sofa, set it aside unwashed
  • Choose a delicate cycle at 86°F (30°C)
  • Treat velvet and linen covers the same way

What to skip when washing a non-slip cover

  • The tumble dryer, at any setting
  • Washing a floor sofa's zip-off non-slip bottom
  • Pulling the cover off a button-tufted cushion: it doesn't come off, so spot clean

Why heat, not water, harms a non-slip base

My friends, this question has reached the workshop with a velvet cover in mind, and with a dining area where crumbs are daily weather. You added the non-slip base so the cushion stays put, and now you wonder whether it has made the cover precious. It hasn't. A cushion cover with a non-slip base still unzips and still goes in the machine.

What changes is the drying. The rubberized backing does not tolerate the dryer, so the cover dries in the air. In the drum it can also let go of a few small specks; a shake and a lint roller lift them off the pile of a deep bottle-green velvet or the slub of an oat linen. The washing Pattern covers every fabric, and velvet's own page explains how its nap likes to be treated. What will sit on yours most days?

How to dry the cover after the spin

  1. Air dry

Lay the cover flat or hang it. No dryer, not even on low.

  2. Shake it out

A few firm shakes free loose particles from the backing.

  3. Lint-roll both sides

Pass a lint roller over the fabric and the base to lift what's left.

  4. Zip it back on

Once dry, slide the insert back in and close the zipper on the underside.

Non-slip backing and velvet share one wash: 86°F (30°C), delicate cycle, air dry, then a lint roller for the loose rubber specks.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

If I add a non-slip base to a zippered velvet cover, can it still go in the washing machine?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Covers made with a non-slip base can still be machine washed. Use 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle and don't tumble dry.

  2. A common question

Are the covers washable, even with a non-slip bottom?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The fabrics are made for easy care, and a non-slip bottom doesn't change that. The soft fabric was recommended as especially easy to clean, which is why one buyer in the US chose it over tufting for a dining area.

  3. A common question

Do the covers come off completely for washing?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover unzips from the underside and comes off, and all fabrics, velvet and linen included, machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry them. Button-tufted cushions are the exception.

  4. A common question

Can I spray a fabric protector on my covers?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, once they arrive. The main protection is washability at 86°F (30°C); the teddy fabric is water-repellent, while velvet has no stain-repellent coating.

Questions buyers ask next

Why are there tiny rubber specks after washing a non-slip cover?

Rubberized non-slip backing can shed some particles in the machine. Air dry the cover, give it a good shake, and pass a lint roller over both sides to lift what remains from the fabric and the base.

Can a cover with non-slip backing go in the dryer on low heat?

No. The non-slip backing doesn't tolerate the tumble dryer, so skip it entirely and dry the cover in the air. Lay it flat or hang it, then shake it out and lint-roll it before zipping it back on.

Does the floor sofa's non-slip bottom go in the wash with the covers?

No. On the floor sofa, the white non-slip bottom is a separate zip-off piece and is not washed. Unzip it first; only the fabric covers take the 86°F (30°C) delicate cycle.
