Can a very long outdoor bench cushion be made in one piece?

Your long-bench checklist before you order

  • Measure the full run end to end, then ask whether that length fits in one piece for your size.
  • Pick the layout: one piece, two long cushions, or one cushion per seat.
  • Mark on your drawing exactly where each join should fall.
  • Draw any drain cutout with its position and size; it's cut from your sketch.
  • Choose a water-repellent, sun-resistant outdoor cover, not velvet or corduroy, for a bench that lives outside.

Why the long ones often come in two

The shop has flagged outdoor pieces from about 75 in (1.9 m) up to 142 in (3.6 m) as past the single-piece limit. So a 142 in (360 cm) bolster went out as two 71 in (180 cm) pieces, and a bay window trapezoid near 160 in (406 cm) long and 2 ft (61 cm) deep was suggested in two.

Drains, bolsters and the winter shed

Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a drain in the bench seat: draw it, and the cutout is made from your drawing. Bolsters to match have been made 8 in (20 cm) across. For the cover, pick a sun-resistant fabric such as outdoor acrylic, or a water-repellent one.
