The Cutting Table · compared on the table
My budget is lower than your quote. What are my options?
Also asked as:My budget is lower. What would I need to do?Can you lower the price to fit my budget?
A quote is a first number. Say yours. Then decide what the room really needs.
SaveThe quick answer
When a custom cushion quote runs over budget, tell the workshop your number, and it may meet it, trim the quote or suggest a cheaper configuration. Some past quotes have been trimmed. Cheaper routes include a standard 20 x 56 in (50 x 140 cm) set, a shorter length or seats without backrests, and the customization fee on custom-size sofas has been waived.
Say your custom cushion budget first
When a custom cushion quote runs over budget, the useful move is plain. Tell the workshop what you can spend, or how many pieces you need.
With a number on the table, the workshop can work toward it. Sometimes it meets the budget outright. Sometimes it trims the quote. Often it suggests a smaller build that fits.
The price does not always move. Handmade custom work is already priced as fairly as the workshop can manage, and it won't sell below cost. Some buyers with a much lower budget decide not to order. That is a reasonable choice too.
Five levers on a custom quote
| Option | How it lowers the price | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Share budget or quantity | Some quotes have been met or trimmed | Nothing but a message |
| Standard set | A 20 x 56 in (50 x 140 cm) seat, 16 in backrest and two round armrests | Your custom dimensions |
| Shorter length | Less cushion to make | Some seating length |
| Seats without backrests | Fewer pieces in the set | Back support |
| Customization fee | Normal on custom-size sofas; it has been waived on request | Nothing, if it is waived |

How to ask for a lower quote
Send real measurements
A quote built on your actual sizes is one the workshop can adjust. The quote checklist lists what to include.
Give one number and one count
Your budget and how many pieces. Several cushions can be bundled into one price.
Ask which piece could go
Backrests, a few inches of length or a custom size are the usual candidates.
Mention a sale that is ending
The workshop once extended an ending sale for a buyer who needed time to measure.
A set sized to the room
A floor cushion set sized to the room can cost less than one sized to the wish. The same holds for a modular floor sofa: a standard set is the lower price, and custom lengths add to it. Measure the floor you actually sit on. What would you keep if you could keep only one piece?
Say the number. Keep what you sit on. Let the rest wait.
Sharing a budget up front helps a custom quote: past quotes came down when buyers named a number, and the customization fee on custom-size sofas has been waived.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Can you lower the price to fit my budget?
The workshop's answerSometimes a little. On one custom-size modular sofa the usual customization fee was waived and the quote trimmed further. More often the price stands, because handmade custom pricing is already set as fairly as possible, and some buyers with much lower budgets decide not to order.
- A common question
My budget is lower than the quote. What can I get instead?
The workshop's answerA smaller standard set, such as a 20 x 56 in (50 x 140 cm) seat with a 16 in backrest and two armrests, or a shorter length. Sometimes the workshop meets a stated budget.
- A common question
Is there a better price if I order several cushions?
The workshop's answerShare your budget or quantity. Six small cushions, about 12 x 12 in (30 x 30 cm), in six colors were bundled into one price, and quotes came down when buyers asked or dropped pieces such as backrests.
- A common question
Do you accept offers on floor cushions and custom sets?
The workshop's answerWithin limits. Buyers have been met in the middle, given small reductions through an offer, and repeat buyers got better per-set prices. The workshop won't sell below cost and sets a minimum on each quote.
Questions buyers ask next
Why does my quote suddenly look almost double?
Listing prices change, and when a sale ends the regular price can look close to double what you saw. Ask the workshop to check the current price for your size before you order. A genuine listing error is corrected rather than honored.
Does a very small cushion cost proportionally less?
Not below a floor. A cushion smaller than the smallest size option is cut to your numbers, but the price can't drop below that smallest option, because shipping is a large part of a small cushion's cost.
Can a sale price be held while I finish measuring?
It has happened: the workshop extended an ending sale for a buyer who needed time to measure. Ask before the sale closes, and send your approximate sizes so the quote can be confirmed as soon as the final numbers are in.
