Can you make any curved shape, or are some too hard to make?

Straight edges travel well in a message, partner. Curves don't, not always. Here is where the line has fallen, request by request.

The quick answer

Yes, curved cushions can be made when the curve is mild, but only after the craftsmen review a measured drawing and photos. Strong or exact-fit curves, such as a round bay window, a shaped rocking-chair seat or new covers for curved outdoor cushions, have been declined. A full-size template can turn a borderline shape, like an S-curve bench edge, into a yes.

Key facts

  • Curved shapes are reviewed by craftsmen before any promise is made.
  • Strong curves, such as a round bay window, may be declined.
  • Shaped chair seats that need an exact fit may be declined.
  • Some complex covers-only re-upholstery jobs on curves are declined.
  • A full physical template made an ogee (S-curve) bench job possible.
  • Complex curves cost more than a plain trapezoid of the same size.
  • Simple rectangular cushions are still quoted normally.

Why a curve is harder than a slant

A slant can be checked: three straight numbers fix the fourth. A curve can't. Two curves with the same end-to-end length can bow by different amounts, and the difference only shows when the cushion meets the seat.

So nothing curved is promised until the craftsmen have reviewed a measured drawing and photos, and the reply says plainly when the fit is risky. Straight banquette cushions skip all of this. For curves, read measuring by chord and rise and making a paper template first.

How to put a curved piece up for review

  1. Draw and photograph

One drawing per cushion with each size on it, plus photos of the whole bench, bay or chair.

  2. Give the depth across the curve

From the short edge to the long edge.

  3. Offer a template for a complex curve

A full template turned an S-shaped bench edge from a no into a yes.

A real project

The S-curve bench that needed a template

A buyer messaged the workshop about a bench with an S-shaped, ogee edge. The first answer was no: a complex S-curve risks not fitting perfectly.

Then the buyer made a full template. With the true curve in hand, the most experienced craftsman agreed to make it, at a premium over a plain trapezoid of the same size. The finished cushion was delivered, and loved.

What it taught
For a complex curve, a full-size template is the difference between no and yes.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can you make cushions with curves, like a curved banquette or a rounded chair seat?

    The workshop's answer

Mild curves are possible, but nothing curved is promised before the craftsmen see a measured drawing and photos. A round bay window was declined: the curve was too pronounced to make accurately from a distance.

  2. A common question

Can you make a custom seat pad for a rocking chair?

    The workshop's answer

After reviewing the sizes, a photo and a drawing, the craftsmen declined: a pad that must fit a shaped chair exactly is too risky without the chair in the workshop. Plain rectangles for the same buyer were quoted normally.

  3. A common question

Can you re-cover curved, angled outdoor loveseat cushions, keeping my foam?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop asked for photos, a drawing of each shape with sizes, and the depth from the short edge to the long edge, then decided it couldn't make those curved covers.

Questions buyers ask next

Do curved cushions cost more than straight ones?

Yes. A complex curve costs more than a plain trapezoid of the same size and goes to the most experienced craftsman. Plain rectangles are quoted at the normal rate.

How should a 90° corner bench be split into cushions?

One long and one short rectangle: cheaper and a better fit. Mitered 45° joins, or corners that aren't 90°, become trapezoids ordered with a full drawing.

Can a cushion have its corners cut off instead of curved?

Yes. Order on the custom-shape listing by the widest depth and longest length, and upload a drawing showing how far each corner cuts in.
