A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A letter about a rust corduroy window seat cushion, seen from the doorway and from an inch away
No pillows, no props, just a ribbed rust cushion in a bare white window. I wrote this one as a letter, because it is about what you see from the doorway and what you only find up close.
SaveThe quick answer
A rust corduroy window seat cushion reads as one warm block of color from ten feet away, and as ribs and corners up close. Run the wale back to front so the front face shows vertical lines, cut the cushion wall to wall, and stop it at the ledge lip. Self piping keeps the corners square when nothing hides them.

Neighbor,
From the doorway: one block of rust
Before you walk up to this window, stand in the doorway and look. From ten feet away you do not see corduroy at all. You see one warm rectangle of rust in a white frame, with red roof tiles and back gardens beyond the glass. The cushion has borrowed the color of those rooftops and carried it inside. That is the ten-foot view, and it is all color and proportion.
The proportion is simple and right. The cushion fills the recess from wall to wall and from the glass to the ledge lip, and it stops there. No overhang, no gap. In flat, honest daylight with nothing styled around it, the seat reads as part of the window, the way a built-in should.
This photo is a real, unstyled fit, and that is why I wanted to write to you about it. There are no pillows to hide a crooked edge and no throw to cover a short end. Oak floorboards below, a white tilt-and-turn window above, and the cushion has to carry the room by itself.
Pinned by Rosa: walking closer
Follow the pins from the rooftops outside down to the ribbed front face and the squared corner, the way your eye travels as you cross the room.

- Ribbed front face
Ribs run back to front, so the front face shows vertical corduroy lines.
- Squared front corner
Self piping keeps the corners crisp with no props to hide them.
- Full-depth seat top
Cut to the full width and depth of the recess, wall to wall.
- Rooftop and garden view
Red roof tiles outside are the color the rust cushion brings indoors.
- White ledge lip
The cushion stops at the ledge edge rather than overhanging it.

From an inch away: ribs, corners and the ledge lip
Now come close enough to touch. The ribs of the corduroy run back to front across the top, so on the front face they stand up as fine vertical lines. That is the detail a guest notices when they sit down, and it is a decision made at the cutting table, not an accident. The wale and nap pattern explains how the direction is set.
Look at the front corner. Self piping in the same rust cord gives the box a crisp edge, and with no props nearby, that edge does all the talking. It stays square.
Then the lip. The cushion ends exactly at the white ledge edge instead of rolling over it. From the doorway you would never name that; you would just feel the seat looked tidy. Pull up a chair and tell me: what does your window look like from the door? The window seat cushion atlas has plenty of company for it.
Six window benches, three rooms, one room at a time
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop with a whole-house plan: six window bench cushions. Two at 78 x 26.5 in (198 x 67 cm) in mustard for the living room, two at 64 x 18.75 in (163 x 48 cm) in oil green for a bedroom, and two at 63 x 19 in (160 x 48 cm) in navy for the main bedroom.
They had the full quote in hand and chose to spread it out, starting with the living room pair and leaving the bedrooms for later. The plan held because the colors were settled from the start. Mustard, oil green and navy each read clearly from a doorway, and each room could wait its turn without the house losing its thread.
That is the ten-foot view at the scale of a home. Choose the colors for every room in one sitting, then order room by room. The window seat measuring pattern keeps each set of numbers honest.
On the cutting table: the bare-window cushion

Buyer questions: compressed foam, what is included, backrest height
- A common question
How long does a compressed cushion take to reach its full size?
The workshop's answerAbout 3 to 4 days, sometimes sooner, sometimes a little longer. If it is still short after that, send a photo with a tape measure along the full length. When a 16 x 94 in cushion stayed at about 91.75 in after 5 days, the workshop remade it and let the buyer keep the first one.
- A common question
Is the foam insert included, or am I only buying the cover?
The workshop's answerCushion prices include the foam insert and a removable zippered cover, and the workshop can supply the filling for outdoor sets as well. If you already have inserts, you can order covers only, which costs less.
- A common question
For a backrest, do I measure from the top of the seat cushion or from behind it?
The workshop's answerIt depends on how you want it styled, but the usual advice is to measure from the top of the seat cushion. That way the backrest sits on the bottom cushion, which looks and fits better.
From ten feet, a window seat cushion is only color and proportion; up close, it is rib direction and corners. Get both right and the seat needs no props.

Questions buyers ask next
Why do the corduroy ribs on this ledge cushion run back to front?
On this seat the ribs run back to front, so the front face shows neat vertical lines where guests see it most. If direction matters to you, say so in your order note so the cutter sets it on purpose.
Does a window seat in a bare recess need pillows?
No. A cushion cut wall to wall in a strong color can stand alone, and an unstyled seat keeps a small window feeling open. Add pillows later if you want a lounging spot; fit and color do the main work.
Why does rust suit a white window recess?
Rust is warm and saturated enough to read from across the room against white plaster, and it often echoes something outside, such as brick, roof tiles or autumn leaves. It keeps a bare white window from feeling cold.
Can I order window seat cushions for several rooms at different times?
Yes. Settle the colors for every room first, then order room by room. One buyer planned six window cushions across three rooms and started with the living room pair, keeping the bedrooms for later.
