Pistachio kilim on a teak bench: one outdoor cushion print from morning to dusk
Callum's notebook from a brick patio: what flat overcast light does to a bright print, why the backs went deep green, and why a phone screen is the worst weather of all.
SaveThe quick answer
A bright outdoor bench cushion print looks calmest under overcast sky and loudest in noon sun, so choose it in the light you actually sit in. Here a pistachio kilim seat is grounded by deep green pindot box backs taken from the lawn and hedge. Judge color from a real swatch outdoors, never from a phone screen.
Log entry: overcast, flat light, no shadows
Overcast day. Flat light. No shadows to hide behind. That is when a cushion shows you what it really is.
A high-backed teak bench stands on concrete slabs against red brick, under a white window, with lawn in front and potted herbs by the fence. The seat is a pistachio-and-white kilim print, geometric and bright as new leaves. Behind it sit two deep green pindot box cushions. Under a gray sky the pistachio reads true: fresh, a little loud, never shrill.
Move the same bench into hard noon sun and the print shouts, whites glaring. In evening light the white warms and the pistachio drifts toward yellow. Morning light runs cooler and pulls it back to green. One fabric, four cushions. Buy the one you will sit with.
That is why the backs went dark. The deep green pindot is the anchor, taken from the hedge, while the bright seat takes its color from new growth. Green beside brick red is an old pairing on the water, too: starboard and port lights.
The backs are deep boxes. They fill the gap between the seat and the high teak rail, so you sit upright against something that pushes back. The zipper sits on the short end of the seat, tucked against the bench post, so the cover comes off for a wash after a summer outside.
Screens are the worst weather of all, friend. A phone can push brights harder and turn whites cool. Carry a real swatch outside and look at it at 8 in the morning and again at 7 at night. Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does daylight. What hour do you actually sit out?
More prints live in outdoor acrylic, more seats in bench cushions and patio and porch cushions, and the Pattern on screen versus daylight color goes deeper.
Light log: the same bench at four hours
| Light | Pistachio seat | Deep green backs |
|---|---|---|
| Overcast | True and fresh | Near black-green, steady |
| Noon sun | Loudest; the whites glare | Clear forest green |
| Evening | Drifts toward yellow | Warms toward olive |
| Phone screen | Often brighter than life | Often too dark to read the dots |

Four pins, from the deep green backs to the potted herbs that gave them their color.

- Deep green box back
A deep box fills the space up to the high rail for upright support.
- Pistachio kilim print
A bright geometric seat is grounded by the darker backs.
- Zip on the short end
The zipper sits on the end panel, hidden against the bench post.
- Potted herbs
Green planting echoes both cushion colors.

A 205-inch seat, cut in two
A buyer messaged the workshop about a built-in seat 205 1/2 in (522 cm) long and 15 3/4 in (40 cm) deep. Too long to handle as one cushion.
The workshop proposed two equal pieces of 102 3/4 in (261 cm), each ordered as its own item in the cart. Then the buyer asked about button tufting. The workshop quoted it both ways, and tufting added close to a third to the price.
Split long seats into equal sections, and settle the buttons question before you ask for the quote.
- Sizes
- 205 1/2 x 15 3/4 in (522 x 40 cm), as 2 x 102 3/4 in (261 cm)
The lesson: Very long benches are split into equal sections; tufting adds a big share to the price.
Buyer questions: true color, missing sizes, late changes
- A common question
Two photos of the same fabric look different to me, one warm and one cool. Which one is right?
The workshop's answerLighting, camera angle and screens all push a fabric warmer or cooler, so one code can look different across photos and the color chart. The workshop will take a fresh close-up of the actual fabric in front of them so you can see the true color.
- A common question
My size isn't in the dropdown. How do I order a custom size?
The workshop's answerMessage the size. The workshop either adds it to the listing as a new option or sends a custom order link. For a small difference it may ask you to order the nearest listed size, such as 19 3/4 x 23 1/2 in (50 x 60 cm), and then make it to your exact size, such as 22 x 22 in (56 x 56 cm).
- A common question
Is there still time to change my fabric or piping color?
The workshop's answerYes, if the order hasn't gone into production. Send the new body and piping codes and the order is updated right away, including switching the piping to match the body.

Questions buyers ask next
Why does my outdoor cushion look different from the photo online?
Screens and camera settings shift undertones, and outdoor light changes through the day. Compare a physical swatch outside in the morning and again in the evening before you commit to a bright print.
Should back cushions match the seat on an outdoor bench?
They don't have to. A darker solid or small dot on the backs grounds a bright seat print and keeps the bench from looking busy. Take both colors from the planting around it.
How do I cushion a very long outdoor bench?
Split it into equal sections. For a seat 205 1/2 in (522 cm) long, the workshop proposed two 102 3/4 in (261 cm) pieces, each ordered as its own item, which are far easier to lift and carry in.
Does button tufting cost more on a long bench cushion?
Yes, noticeably. On one long built-in seat, tufting added close to a third to the quote. Decide on buttons before you ask for a price, so the quote you get is the one you use.
