A custom navy velvet bench cushion for a dressing room, built firm for boots
A letter about a bench you sit on for a minute at a time, several times a day. That kind of sitting asks more of the foam than a long evening on a sofa.
SaveThe quick answer
A dressing bench cushion should sit firm, not soft, because it is used briefly and often: a quick landing, a boot pulled on, up again. The standard seat foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), firm to medium-firm and wrapped in polyester fiber, cut 4 in (10 cm) thick, and a non-slip base keeps it from sliding.
High Point ·
My friend,
Thank you for the photograph. It has been propped against my thread rack all morning.
Here is what I see. A walnut-stained bench on an ivory shag rug, and on it a navy velvet cushion with cream piping and a good square box edge. Behind it, open rails of blue shirts, white shirts and camel coats. A brass sconce with a white shade. Knitwear folded on a floating shelf, a jewelry tray left open, and a tall mirror leaning on the wall.
The navy did not come from a swatch card. It came off the rail, from the darkest shirts and coats in the room. The cream piping answers the white shirts and the rug. The walnut legs sit between the two, so the navy does not look heavy on the floor. The knitwear repeats cream, navy and gray. Nothing in this corner is an accident. What color hangs most on your rail?
Now the mirror. It doubles the bench, so a wandering piping line would show twice. Square corners and a straight welt are not vanity here. The glass keeps score.
Where my thumb went
Five places I would press, one after another.

- Navy velvet top
The navy is pulled from the row of dark shirts and coats on the rail.
- Cream piping
The welt echoes the white shirts and ivory rug, outlining a thick box edge.
- Walnut bench legs
A mid-tone wood frame keeps the navy from looking heavy on the floor.
- Leaning floor mirror
The mirror reflects the cushion, so a straight piping line matters twice.
- Folded knitwear
Soft stacks on the shelf repeat the cream, navy and gray of the cushion.

What is under the velvet
A dressing bench is sat on briefly and often. You drop onto it, pull on a boot, stand up. That wants a firm seat. A soft one lets you sink and then makes you climb out.
The standard seat foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), high-resilience, firm to medium-firm. It is wrapped in polyester fiber before it goes into the cover, which fills the velvet out and rounds the edge a little. A softer 1.75 lb (28 kg/m³) foam exists for folks who like to sink, but I would not put it on a bench cushion for boots.
Thickness is a separate matter. Standard is 4 in (10 cm), and this cushion looks every bit of it: a landing, not a pad. Buy the cushion once, cry once. The foam firmness finder helps if you sit between two feelings.
The cushion that would not stay put
A buyer messaged the workshop worried that a new bench cushion would slide. The order was burnt terracotta velvet with a non-slip base added, and piping chosen to match a cream reference.
The workshop looked at the piping shade picked and said plainly that it leaned yellow; another cream on the card was cleaner. The buyer agreed, and the order was changed before cutting.
A firm cushion needs grip underneath, or it will skate on a polished bench. And send a color photo with the order, because the maker can catch a cream that leans the wrong way.
The lesson: Send a color reference photo; the maker can catch piping that leans the wrong way.
Buyer questions
- A common question
Is the bench cushion just a cover, or does it come with the foam inside?
The workshop's answerIt is the full cushion, foam insert included and ready to use. If you only need a cover, there is a separate zippered cover-only option.
- A common question
Can the piping be a different color from the body of the cushion?
The workshop's answerYes, any combination can be made, for example a teal body with piping in a close neighboring shade. The workshop sends original photos of both fabrics so you can judge the shades yourself.
- A common question
Our bay window has five windows, not three. Can you still make the seat cushion?
The workshop's answerYes, any number of angles. Send a drawing with every segment measured, including the depth at each break. One five-window bay, 16 in (41 cm) deep at its deepest and 115⅞ in (294 cm) long, was made at the standard 4 in (10 cm) with contrast piping.
A dressing bench cushion is sat on briefly and often, so it wants firm foam, about 2.0 lb (32 kg/m³), not a soft sofa seat you have to climb out of.

Questions buyers ask next
Should a dressing bench cushion be soft or firm?
Firm to medium-firm. You sit briefly and get up again, so the foam should catch you rather than swallow you. A firm seat also holds its shape longer under daily use.
Will a velvet cushion slide on a wooden bench?
It can on a polished top. A non-slip base covers the whole underside with a grip fabric; it is not adhesive or rubber, so it will not mark the wood.
Does new firm foam soften over time?
A little. New foam feels firmest in its first weeks and eases with use. Give a new cushion a few days out of its packing before judging it.
Sit well. — Harlan
P.S. When it arrives, open the bag within a few days and give the foam three or four days to recover before you judge the firmness.
