A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A mustard corduroy window seat cushion, wall to wall, and how to order one right the first time
A street window, a painted ledge, and a mustard cushion that runs from one side of the alcove to the other. It fits because somebody wrote the numbers down in the right place.
SaveThe quick answer
To order a window seat cushion right the first time, put every spec in the order's personalization note: exact size, thickness, fabric code, piping code and tufting. The workshop builds from the order, not from the chat, so a thickness agreed only in messages can be missed. Shortlist codes and ask for close-up photos before you pay.

What a straight-on photo gives away
Pull up a chair, because this photograph is more honest than most. It was taken square to the window, the way you would measure it, and it shows right away why a cushion cut to the exact width of the recess matters. The mustard seat runs from reveal to reveal. No gaps at the ends, nowhere for crumbs or a lost earring to fall, so the seat looks built in.
Ledge, baseboard and walls all wear one pale gray. The lip of the ledge shows below the cushion, and because it is painted the wall color, it simply disappears. That leaves the mustard corduroy as the only block of color under the window, with its ribs running like a row of pencil lines.
The sill things are small and low: a stack of books, a stoneware mug, one succulent in a white pot. The upright spines echo the corduroy ribs, and the little plant is the only green against mustard and gray. A single navy pillow sits off to one side, which keeps a very symmetrical picture from feeling stiff. Across the street, red-brick houses and parked cars, and flat overcast light that shows color as it truly is.
The idea to copy is simple. In a narrow alcove, paint the ledge the wall color and let one saturated cushion carry the whole design. What does your ledge measure, reveal to reveal? More ideas live on the window seat cushions page and in the corduroy swatches.
Pinned by Rosa
Five pins, from the painted ledge lip to the navy pillow.

- Wall-to-wall cushion
Measured reveal to reveal, the cushion fills the ledge so there are no crumb-catching gaps at the ends.
- Single navy pillow
One pillow set off-center keeps a frontal composition from feeling stiff.
- Books on the sill
Upright spines echo the corduroy ribs in a vertical rhythm.
- Potted succulent
A single green plant is the only natural color against the mustard and gray.
- Painted ledge lip
The board shows below the cushion, so it is painted the wall color to disappear.

The cushion that came 2 inches thin
A buyer in the US ordered a 79.25 x 11 in window seat cushion in linen L-14 with pink L-72 piping, through the 11 x 79 in size option. Then she saw she had typed the wrong width. So she reordered at 79.25 x 23.25 in, in the lighter L-05 with the same piping, and asked by message whether it would be 4 in thick like the first. The workshop said yes, by message.
The second cushion arrived 2 in thick. Production had followed the order description, and the thickness never made it from the chat into the order. Nobody was careless on purpose. The note box and the message thread simply live in two different places, and the cutting table only reads one of them.
- Sizes
- 79.25 x 11 in (201 x 28 cm), then 79.25 x 23.25 in (201 x 59 cm)
- Fabric
- Linen L-14, then L-05, with L-72 piping
The lesson: Put every spec, especially thickness, in the order personalization; production reads the order, not the chat.
What goes in the note box, line by line
- Length x depth x thickness, with the unit, measured reveal to reveal
- The fabric code, not the color name: V11, not just mustard
- The piping code, even when it matches
- Tufting, if you want it, spelled out
- Anything agreed in messages, copied in exactly
- For a shaped seat, a drawing with every edge length
Three order questions, answered
- A common question
Can I order the same cushion for both the seat and the back, and how should the back be sized?
The workshop's answerYes, plenty of buyers order both. Back cushions are usually a little thinner and a little narrower than the seat, so they sit better upright and do not eat seat depth. If the back rests on top of the seat cushion, subtract the seat's thickness: a 17 in (43 cm) back on a 4 in (10 cm) seat fills a 21 in (53 cm) frame. Seat and back can be separate or connected to fold.
- A common question
Could my corduroy bench cushion be tufted?
The workshop's answerYes, and there was no charge for tufting it. Write that you want it tufted in the personalization box, and the workshop sends a photo of the buttoned design, sometimes very soon after you order.
- A common question
Do you make trapezoid cushions for a bay window?
The workshop's answerYes. Send every edge length, the long side, the short side and both angled sides, plus any cut-ins and the depth, and draw the shape on paper. The tailor prices the piece from the drawing and sends a custom order link.
A window seat cushion reordered at 79.25 x 23.25 in was agreed at 4 in thick by message and arrived 2 in thick. The workshop builds from the order note.

Have it made
Have this made — ask Rosa’s workshop
Tell the workshop who sits there: grandkids, the dog, a cup of coffee at six. The right fabric and foam follow from the people. — Rosa
Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Questions buyers ask next
Should I order a fabric sample before a window seat cushion?
If the exact tone matters, yes. Shortlist two or three codes and ask for close-up photos first, then order a sample when a shade must be certain. Look at it in daylight by the window where the cushion will sit.
Why paint a window seat ledge the same color as the wall?
Because the lip of the ledge shows below the cushion. Painted to match the walls, it disappears, and the cushion reads as the only strong shape under the window. It is the cheapest styling trick in the house.
What should I do if a cushion arrives thinner than we agreed?
Give it a few days to expand fully if it came compressed, then photograph it with a tape measure and write to the workshop with your order. Next time, copy anything agreed in messages into the personalization note.
Which way should corduroy ribs run on a window seat cushion?
Keep them running the same way on every piece so the color reads evenly, since corduroy shades a little with the direction of its pile. The corduroy pattern covers wale and nap in detail.

P.S. Before you press the button, read your order note out loud to somebody at the kitchen table. If a number sounds wrong spoken, it is wrong written.
