A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A mustard corduroy window seat cushion, from January light to August heat
Rosa starts with three buyer questions about fit and pattern, then gets down at seat height to read one corduroy corner through a whole year of weather.
SaveThe quick answer
A mustard corduroy window seat cushion changes with the seasons in look more than in shape. Low winter sun rakes across the wales and deepens the color; flatter summer light makes it read lighter. The shape holds when the box edge is self-piped and the wales run across the top and vertically down the side, matched at the seam.
Before the reading: three questions about fit and pattern
- A common question
How close to my numbers will the finished cushion be? I'd rather it came out a little small than too big.
The workshop's answerFinished sizes can vary by about an inch (2.5 cm). If a number is a hard maximum, say so: when one buyer said 24 in (61 cm) was the absolute limit, the workshop made the cushion 23 in (58 cm).
- A common question
Is everything a solid color, or do you have patterned fabrics too?
The workshop's answerThere are patterns: striped fabrics and oriental-design fabrics. The workshop can send photos of finished cushions made in them so you can see the pattern at full size.
- A common question
I need 23.5 in, but the listing jumps from 21-23 in to 24-26 in. Which one do I pick?
The workshop's answerPick the next larger range, here 24-26 in (61-66 cm), and write your exact size, 23.5 in (60 cm), in the personalization note.
Now, the reading
At seat height: what a close-up of one corner shows
Most window seat photos are taken standing up. This one kneels, which is where a tailor looks.
The edge. It's a box cushion with a gusset about a hand-width deep. Self piping in the same mustard corduroy turns the front corner in one piece. That rounded bead sits right on the seam where the top panel meets the side, which is also where knees and tote bags rub.
The wales. On top they run across the seat; on the gusset they turn and run vertical, meeting the top's ribs at the piping. That match is the difference between made to measure and off the shelf. The corduroy swatches show the wale widths.
The props. A navy linen pillow is pushed into the corner of the recess to act as a backrest, the one accent color. Paperbacks and a white mug sit on the painted sill, which is at a different height from the cushion, so the cup never balances on fabric. The edge of a paper floor lamp and its black cable say someone reads here after dark.
Pinned by Rosa: five close-up details on one corner
Five pins along a single corner, from the piped front edge to the mug on the sill.

- Piped front corner
Self piping turns the corner in one piece, which is what keeps a box cushion square after years of use.
- Front piping line
The corded bead sits exactly on the seam, so top panel and gusset meet in one clean line.
- Vertical wales on gusset
On the side panel the ribs run vertically and are matched to the top, so the pattern flows over the edge.
- Navy linen pillow
The pillow is pushed into the corner of the recess to act as a backrest.
- Mug on the sill
Sill and cushion sit at different heights, so a cup never has to balance on fabric.

One mustard cushion through four seasons
Winter. The sun comes in low and sideways. It rakes across the wales, every rib throws a thin shadow, and mustard goes deep, nearly honey. Corduroy is a warm hand in January, and this is the season the seat earns its keep.
Spring. Windows open and pollen drifts in. Brush the wales in the direction of the nap before trying anything wetter; the Pattern on corduroy wale and nap direction shows which way.
Summer. The light climbs higher and flatter, and the same mustard reads lighter and brighter. Corduroy can feel warm on bare legs in August, so a thin linen throw folded over the seat is an easy swap, and it keeps the strongest sun off the wales facing the glass. The notes on window seat cushion fading explain why that front edge matters.
Fall. Back to deep color and long reads. Check the corners: a self-piped corner that's still square after a year is doing its job.
Which season does your window seat get used most? Choose the fabric for that one. More recesses like this live under living room cushions and window seat cushions.
A backrest and an ottoman made to sit beside another maker's sofa
A buyer in the US owned a teddy-style floor sofa from another maker and ordered one L-shaped backrest and an ottoman, each 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm), in our closest corduroy color. The workshop was straight with them: the tone couldn't be guaranteed, so please send a photo once the other sofa arrives.
It came in a little off, but acceptable, and the workshop added two metal bars to hold the new pieces in place. Different makers mean different dye lots, and spring daylight never matches November lamplight. Get a swatch first. The Pattern on dye lots and matching cushions later explains why.

On a corduroy window seat cushion, ask for the wales matched across the piping seam: ribs that turn at the edge keep a box cushion looking square.

Questions buyers ask next
Does corduroy hold up on a window seat that gets strong afternoon sun?
It works with a little care. The wales facing the glass take the most light, so a sheer during the hottest hours or a folded throw over the seat in summer slows any change. Keep an eye on the front edge, which gets the most sun.
Why does the corduroy on the side of a box cushion run a different way from the top?
The gusset is a separate strip of cloth. Cut so its ribs run vertically and meet the top's ribs at the piping, the pattern looks continuous over the edge instead of chopped, and the cushion reads as one tailored piece.
What does self piping do on a corduroy box cushion?
It adds a rounded bead of the same fabric along each seam. The bead protects the seam line where knees and bags rub, and because it turns each corner in one piece, it helps the box keep a square outline.
