Mushroom seat and back cushions on a white paneled bench, made for long sitting

Every house has one spot where somebody reads until supper. Three buyers get their answers first, then we read the bench.

A white paneled bench under the window gets a mushroom seat cushion and two back cushions: soft color, no pattern, nothing fussy.

The quick answer

A window seat cushion made for long sitting pairs a moderate seat with separate back cushions, each about half the bench length, resting against the wall. Here a mushroom linen-look seat sits under two slightly darker taupe backs. Standard bench thickness is 4 in (10 cm), changeable to 2, 3 or 8 in, and backrests around 14 to 15 in (36 to 38 cm) tall stay below the window.

Buyer questions: messy kids, two cushions and a thinner seat

  1. A common question

Which fabric is easiest to clean for a family eating nook or a kids' playroom? Would velvet work, or something like microsuede?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop recommends its soft fabric, which is durable and easy to clean, and suggested it over velvet for a children's playroom. For a light beige look, its smoke color is a beige-gray.

  2. A common question

Is there a discount if I order two or more custom bench cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, multiples are discounted. Two 98 x 17.5 x 3 in (249 x 44 x 7.5 cm) corduroy bench cushions came in at a lower price each, and four 19 5/8 x 43 3/4 in (50 x 111 cm) linen cushions were offered at one set price for all four.

  3. A common question

Can you make the cushion 2 inches thick instead of 4?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Place the order and write in the Personalization section that you want 2 in (5 cm). The standard on the corduroy and linen bench cushions and the tufted floor cushion is 4 in (10 cm), and it can change to suit you, to 3 in (7.5 cm) or even 8 in (20 cm).

Now, the reading

Reading the bench: built for the second hour

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and so is a teenager with a phone and nowhere to be. A seat that's fine for ten minutes can be misery by the second hour. This white paneled bench under a tall sash window is built for the second hour.

Start with the seat. It's a mushroom linen-look box cushion with self piping, at a moderate thickness, so the bench stays low enough to feel like a window seat rather than a sofa. Feet stay on the floor. That matters more than softness when you read for an afternoon. If you're not sure where yours will land, the seat height calculator works it out from the bench.

Then the backs. Two cushions, each half the bench length, lean on the wall with no frame behind them. They're a touch darker than the seat, taupe gray against mushroom, so the set has depth without a color change you'd notice from the doorway. Half-length means one person can lift one, plump it and settle back without bothering whoever's reading at the other end. Sizing help is in back cushion height.

Shaker panels make the base look built in, so the cushion is the only soft thing in the picture. One white jug on a pedestal table keeps the palette to white and mushroom, and the cream rug and pale oak floor keep the bottom of the frame quiet. Who in your house claims the window seat first?

Four pins: the mushroom seat, the two backs, the paneled base and the single white jug.

  1. Mushroom seat cushion

A warm mushroom tone softens the stark white base without adding pattern.

  2. Two back cushions

Each back cushion is half the bench length, easy to lift and plump.

  3. Paneled white base

Shaker panels make the bench look built-in, so the cushion is the only soft element.

  4. Ceramic jug

A single white jug keeps the palette to white and mushroom.

Before you order a seat for long afternoons

  • Decide thickness against the bench: 4 in (10 cm) is standard, and 2, 3 or 8 in can be written in the Personalization section.
  • Keep wall-backed backrests around 14 to 15 in (36 to 38 cm) tall so they sit below the window line.
  • Split the back into two cushions, each half the bench length, so each lifts and plumps on its own.
  • Pick a cloth the family can clean; with kids, the soft fabric was recommended over velvet.
  • Ordering several cushions at once? Ask for the multiple-piece price.
A real project

The slanted side that had to be 26 3/8 inches

A buyer sketched an angled window seat as a trapezoid: 70 7/8 in (180 cm) along the bottom, 39 3/8 in (100 cm) along the top, 21 1/4 in (54 cm) deep, with 25 5/8 in (65 cm) slanted sides. They chose the thick option, about 4 7/8 in (12.5 cm), because this was going to be the place to curl up.

Before cutting, the workshop checked the geometry. With that top, bottom and depth, the slanted sides can only be 26 3/8 in (67 cm). So the shop wrote back that it would make the sides 26 3/8 in and the three main measurements would match exactly. The buyer agreed.

Top, bottom and depth decide the slant. Measure those three carefully, and the rest follows; our trapezoid measurements notes show how.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a window seat cushion be for reading for hours?

Thick enough to cushion, thin enough to keep your feet on the floor. In this photo a moderate seat keeps the bench at window-seat height. Standard is 4 in (10 cm); 2 or 3 in keeps a taller bench from climbing too high.

Why are the back cushions a shade darker than the seat?

Taupe gray backs over a mushroom seat give the set depth without a visible color change. From across the room it reads as one soft block; up close the two tones separate the seat from the wall.

Do back cushions need a frame or rail behind them?

Not on a wall-backed bench like this one; the two cushions lean straight on the wall. If yours slump or slide, our notes on keeping back cushions upright cover ties, grip and wall rails.
