A long chocolate corduroy window seat cushion, and how its brown changes from morning to night
A letter from Rosa about one long brown pad by a lawn window, and why the color on your phone is not the color you'll sit on.
SaveThe quick answer
Judge a chocolate brown corduroy by daylight at the window where it will live, not on a screen: the ribs catch light, so the same brown looks cooler in daylight and warmer under evening lamps. On a long window seat, order one continuous cushion so no gap opens in the middle, and style it with a single lumbar pillow.

Dear neighbor,
A letter about one long brown cushion
I have looked at this photograph at breakfast, at noon and after supper, and the cushion has been three different browns. That isn't the cushion changing. It's the light.
Pull up a chair and look with me. It's one long chocolate corduroy window seat cushion on a white bench, facing a green lawn through white casements. In fresh daylight the brown reads deep and a little cool, because the window is full of green and the white joinery throws clean light back onto the pile. Under an evening lamp the same cushion goes warmer, closer to cocoa, and the ribs of the corduroy catch the light from the side so the pile looks softer.
Chocolate against white gives you the crispness of navy with more warmth, and it hides everyday scuffs a pale fabric would show. On a seat this long, that's worth something.
What I'd have you notice is how little sits on it. One oatmeal linen lumbar leans at the wall end, and the rest is left bare. Pile on four more pillows and a long window seat starts to look like a mattress.
The props earn their keep. A pilea in a white pot softens all those straight lines with round leaves. Two clothbound books on the sill repeat the brown at sill height, so the color shows up twice. A corner of sisal rug keeps the floor as plain and natural as the linen.
Five pins along a long white window seat
Five pins, from the wall-end lumbar to the square box corner, each one chosen to keep a long seat calm.

- Long chocolate pad
One continuous cushion avoids a gap in the middle of a long run.
- Linen lumbar
A single pillow at the wall end stops the seat looking like a mattress.
- Box corner
Border seam and piping keep the corner square on a long cushion.
- Pilea on sill
Round leaves soften the long straight lines of seat and sill.
- Clothbound books
Brown covers repeat the cushion color at sill height.

Screen brown and daylight brown are not the same color
Here's where folks go wrong. They choose a brown on a phone late at night, with the screen turned warm. Then the cushion arrives, they set it under a bright window at ten in the morning, and it looks like somebody else's order.
So get swatches and test them where the cushion will live. Hold one against the white bench at breakfast, again in the afternoon, and once more under the lamp you actually use. If you love it all three times, you've found your brown. The notes on screen versus daylight color and ordering fabric swatches go further.
One more thing about long seats: order one continuous cushion rather than two halves, so there's no gap in the middle of the run. The border seam on the front of this one shows the cover was cut to the cushion, and the piping keeps that far corner square the whole length.
What time of day do you sit in your window, and what color is the light then?
Bolsters after the fact: a 21 x 82 in seat, 5 in thick
A buyer in the US ordered a window seat cushion 21 x 82 in (53 x 208 cm) and 5 in (13 cm) thick, in fabric 107 with 110 piping. Then they spotted matching bolsters in the reviews and wanted a pair, 6 x 20 in (15 x 51 cm).
There was no bolster listing at the time, so the workshop had them order the seat first and then sent a custom link for the two bolsters. It worked out fine.
Still, if they'd been on my porch, I'd have said it plain: order bolsters with the seat, so fabric and piping match exactly. Round ends and a long cushion look like family when they're cut together.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Do you have anything with a pattern, or only solid colors?
The workshop's answerThere are patterns: striped fabrics and oriental-design fabrics. The workshop can send photos of cushions already made in them, so you see the scale on a real seat before choosing.
- A common question
How do I order welted cushions for a U-shaped banquette?
The workshop's answerOrder each cushion at its own size on the listing, for example two sides at 63.5 x 21.5 in (161 x 55 cm) and a back run at 93.5 x 21.5 in (237 x 55 cm). Choose the thickness, 2 in (5 cm) in that case, and write your fabric code. Welting comes as standard, and the pet-friendly chart has taupe tones.
- A common question
I love the tufted French-style cushion, but it's over my budget. Is there a cheaper way to go?
The workshop's answerThe tufted set, quoted for a 70 x 28 x 3 in (178 x 71 x 8 cm) seat, includes its backrests and armrests, which is part of the cost. The less expensive route is a non-tufted, foam-filled cushion.

A long window seat cushion made as one continuous piece leaves no gap in the middle; two halves put a seam right where people sit.

Questions buyers ask next
Why does a brown cushion look different at night than in daylight?
Warm lamp light pushes brown toward red and gold, while daylight from a green, open view cools it. Corduroy ribs also catch light from the side, so the pile looks lighter or darker as the light moves. Judge the color in both.
Is one long cushion better than two halves on a window seat?
For a single long run, usually yes. One continuous cushion leaves no gap or seam in the middle where people sit, and the piping runs unbroken from end to end. Two pieces make sense when lids or supports divide the seat.
How many pillows does a long window seat need?
Fewer than most people think. One lumbar pillow at the wall end keeps a long seat from looking like a mattress and leaves room to stretch out. Add a row of pillows and the seat starts to read as a bed.
Can bolsters be added after the window seat cushion is ordered?
They can. A buyer in the US ordered the seat first, then two 6 x 20 in (15 x 51 cm) bolsters through a custom link. Ordering them together is the safer route, so fabric and piping match exactly.
