Custom throw pillows on a pale gray sofa: a gray arch jacquard and a speckled black bouclé
Two pillows, one sofa, cool overcast light. From across the room you see a light shape and a dark one; lean closer and each turns out to be doing something clever.
On a gray sofa the patterned pillow borrows the sofa's tone, while the black speckled boucle gives the arrangement its weight.
The quick answer
On a pale gray sofa, pair one throw pillow that matches the sofa's tone with one that is clearly darker, rather than two mid-tones. A tone-on-tone jacquard with cream piping blends from a distance and shows its pattern up close; a speckled black bouclé adds weight without reading as a hole.
From across the room: one light shape, one dark
A gray sofa is generous and a little greedy: it swallows gray pillows whole. This pair gets around that with one of the oldest tricks I know, which is to let one pillow agree with the sofa and one disagree.
From across the room, the front pillow is almost the sofa's own color, gray and cream arches on a pale ground, so it feels planned rather than added. Behind it sits a near-black bouclé, and it gives the whole arrangement its weight. Light, dark, done. Two mid-grays would have melted into one soft smudge, and nobody would have looked twice.
The room is kept spare so the pair can work. A dark oak side table holds a cream ceramic lamp with a linen shade, and a white window frame lets in cool overcast daylight. The lamp's glaze repeats the cream in the jacquard and warms what could have been a very cold picture. Let one color speak and the others listen: here gray speaks, black answers, and cream keeps the peace.

Four details that change depending on how close you stand.

- Gray arch jacquard
Gray and cream arches echo the sofa's color so the pillow feels planned, not added.
- Speckled black boucle
White flecks in the black pile stop the dark pillow reading as a hole in the picture.
- Ceramic table lamp
The lamp's cream glaze repeats the jacquard ground and warms the gray scene.
- Cream piping
A cream cord outlines the jacquard against a sofa of almost the same tone.

Leaning in: flecks, arches and a cream cord
Now lean in, my friends. The black pillow isn't black at all. White flecks run through the looped pile, and those flecks are why it reads as cloth instead of a hole in the photograph. A solid black would have been a dark square cut out of the sofa; the speckle keeps it soft and touchable.
The front pillow is a custom throw pillow in an arch jacquard, the pattern woven in gray and cream rather than printed on top. Its knife edge is finished with cream piping, and that cord is the quiet hero. Against a sofa of almost the same tone, it draws a clean outline you only notice when you look for it. Take it away and the pillow would sink into the upholstery.
If your living room has a pale gray sofa, try this before you buy anything: hold a light fabric and a dark one against the arm in daylight, then walk to the doorway and look back. Which one disappears first? You can test pairings in the pillow cover studio too, but let real daylight have the last word.
A futon becomes a sofa, and the old filling stays
A buyer in the US had a futon frame they no longer slept on and wanted it to live as an everyday sofa, reusing the good wool filling from the old mattress. So the order was covers only, no foam: two zippered covers in linen, a seat cover 72 x 23 in (183 x 58 cm) with 4 in (10 cm) of fillable depth and a back cover 72 x 21 in (183 x 53 cm) with 3 in (7.5 cm).
They worried that linen wouldn't stand up to daily sitting. The answer was in the fiber: it is a linen-polyester blend chosen for seat cushions. After ordering, they realized the covers needed ties at all four corners to hold them to the frame, and the ties were added to the existing order.
The close-up lesson, again. Put the fillable depth and the tie positions in your first message, and you can reuse filling you already trust.
- Sizes
- Seat cover 72 x 23 in, 4 in fillable (183 x 58 x 10 cm); back cover 72 x 21 in, 3 in fillable (183 x 53 x 7.5 cm)
- Fabric
- Linen-polyester blend, zippered covers only
The lesson: Covers-only orders let you reuse good filling; state the fillable depth and tie positions up front.
Buyer questions: zippers, velvet and sofa covers
- A common question
Could the mattress cover close with elastic, like a fitted sheet, instead of a zipper?
The workshop's answerNo. Mattress covers are made with a zipper only; there is no elastic, fitted-sheet version.
- A common question
If I order a small pillow in velvet instead of linen, does the price change?
The workshop's answerNo, velvet costs the same. Choose the size, then write the velvet color code in the personalization box.
- A common question
Can you make replacement covers for an IKEA Friheten sofa?
The workshop's answerNo. The workshop makes seat cushions and backrests, not fitted covers for that sofa. The striped fabrics the buyer liked, N19, N31 and N32, are 100% cotton.
On a pale gray sofa, pair one throw pillow in the sofa's own tone with one clearly darker. Two mid-gray pillows blur into one.

Questions buyers ask next
Why add piping to a tone-on-tone throw pillow?
When a pillow is close to the sofa's color, its edge disappears. A cream or contrasting cord traces the outline, so the pillow reads as a shape rather than a soft patch. On a pillow that already contrasts with the sofa, piping is optional.
Is bouclé a good fabric for throw pillows?
Yes. Bouclé's looped yarn gives a pillow texture you see up close and softness you feel when you lean back. A speckled bouclé carries a second color in the loops, which keeps a dark pillow from looking flat against a pale sofa.
How do I choose two pillows for a gray sofa?
Start with contrast, not matching. Pick one pillow in the sofa's own tone, patterned if you like, and one clearly darker. Check the pair from the doorway: if both blur into the sofa, the darker one isn't dark enough.
Can I order covers only and reuse my own filling?
Yes. Covers-only orders are possible, as with a futon seat and back ordered as zippered covers to reuse old wool filling. Give the finished size and the fillable depth, and mention any ties so they are sewn in from the start.
