A cream corduroy window seat cushion, cut to the lid of a storage bench
Rosa takes the cushion apart layer by layer, then retells one buyer's angled closet nook: the question, the drawing and the quote it made possible.
SaveThe quick answer
On a storage bench, cut the window seat cushion to the lid exactly, with no overhang to catch when you lift it. This cream corduroy box cushion does that, with self piping and ribs running the length of the seat. Tone on tone with the white bench, it leaves the color to one cobalt vase against sage walls.
The cushion, cut open
Cover fabric. A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Piping. A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
Foam core. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.
Zipper. Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
The anatomy of a seat you lift every week
Some weeks a storage bench cushion gets lifted more than it gets sat on, so it has to be built for both.
Here's this one, from the top down. The cover is a cream corduroy, and the ribs run lengthwise along the seat. That stretches the bench to the eye and lets the side light from the window pick out every wale. The edges are self piped in the same cord, so the outline stays calm. The sides are a straight box edge, which keeps the front square and tidy.
Inside, the standard on the workshop's corduroy bench cushions is 4 in (10 cm) of firm foam, and it can be changed; one buyer asked for 2 in (5 cm) instead. Under all of it sits the most important measurement in the photo: the cushion is cut to the lid exactly. No overhang means nothing catches when you open the bench for blankets. The storage bench cushion guide goes deeper.
Now the room. Sage walls, white paneling, French doors, sheer linen curtains. Bench and cushion are tone on tone, so the ribs supply all the interest while the color stays quiet. One cobalt vase with bare branches does the job a throw pillow might, adding contrast without covering the seat. A paper cloud pendant matches that calm mood, and a white ladder bookshelf close by turns the bench into a reading perch. The magazines stay on the sill, not the seat. A slim brass side table and a cream shaggy rug finish the corner.
With colored walls, a neutral window seat cushion lets you change accessories by season without redoing the seat. So tell me, neighbor: how deep is the lid on your bench?

The closet nook with one sharp corner
A buyer messaged the workshop about a floor cushion for a closet nook. One end was rectangular; the other came to a sharp triangular angle. They sent three numbers: a long side of about 79 in (201 cm), a short side of 59 in (150 cm) and a depth of 24 in (61 cm).
That was the question. The choice the shop made was not to guess. Three numbers can describe more than one shape, and only one of them fits that closet. So it asked for a drawing with every side measured.
The sketch came back, and with it the result: a quote for the exact shape. Try your own numbers in the trapezoid cushion calculator, and see closet and under-loft bed nooks for more spaces like it.
Sending an angled shape the way that buyer did
Draw it from above
Sketch the nook as if you were on a ladder looking down. Mark which end is square and which is angled.
Measure every edge
Write a number on every side, including the short slanted one. Three numbers leave room for guesswork; a full outline doesn't.
Take the depth square
Measure depth at 90 degrees to the back wall, not along the slope, and measure each side corner to corner.
Add a photo
Send the sketch with a photo of the space, so the shop can see the frame, the walls and anything the cushion must clear.
Buyer questions: welts, quotes and seeing it first
- A common question
Can the piping be the same fabric as the cushion, or can I skip piping altogether?
The workshop's answerEither works, and contrast piping is the third choice. Self piping in the same fabric is the easiest for the workshop to make. For outdoor cushions the shop recommends it, because it looks tailored and reinforces the edges.
- A common question
How is a custom-size window seat cushion priced?
The workshop's answerBy size and fabric, so every one is quoted. Recent requests included 23 x 76 in (58 x 193 cm) in emerald velvet, 31 x 63 in (79 x 160 cm), and a pair of tufted velvet cushions at 46 x 22 in (117 x 56 cm) and 69 x 21 1/2 in (175 x 55 cm) in two different colors. The shop then adds your size as an option on the listing.
- A common question
Is there a photo of a finished cushion in my exact fabric and piping pairing?
The workshop's answerOften not in that exact combination. The shop photographs the fabric and piping side by side and sends extra shots in different lighting on request. Whole-cushion or from-a-distance photos aren't always available, so physical samples are the safest way to judge a color for your room.

Questions buyers ask next
Should a storage bench cushion overhang the lid?
No. Cut it to the lid exactly. An overhang catches when you lift the lid to reach blankets or toys, and on this white paneled bench the flush edge also keeps the box shape crisp.
Why do the corduroy ribs run lengthwise on this storage bench cushion?
Along the length of the seat. Lengthwise ribs stretch the bench visually and catch the side light from a window, which is how a tone-on-tone cushion like this one still shows texture.
How thick is a corduroy window seat cushion?
The standard on the workshop's corduroy bench cushions is 4 in (10 cm), and it can be changed. One buyer asked for 2 in (5 cm) by writing it in the personalization section when ordering.
What should I send for a cushion with one angled end?
A top-down drawing with every side measured, not only the long side, short side and depth. In one closet nook project the shop asked for exactly that before it could quote a 79 in (201 cm) by 24 in (61 cm) shape.
