The window seat cushion that gave a home office somewhere to sit

Pull up a chair. One dark corduroy cushion, one cream storage bench, and a home-office corner that finally got a second job.

A near-black cushion gives the desk corner a place to sit away from the screen. The dark color also hides the wear a workday seat gets.

The quick answer

One anthracite corduroy window seat cushion can turn an unused storage bench beside a desk into a real seat, and near-black hides the coffee and pen marks a working corner collects. Keep the cushion below the desk top, let warm oak and jute sit around it, and test fabric samples beside finishes that won't change before you order.

Before: a lid for the printer paper

Every house has one: a storage bench under a window that nobody sits on. The lid collects mail, printer paper, a laptop bag. It's furniture pretending to be a shelf. Do you have one of those?

Put one anthracite corduroy window seat cushion on it and the corner changes jobs. Now it's where you take the phone call away from the screen and read the printout with your feet tucked up. Same bench, same window. That's the makeover I like best, neighbor: the kind you can carry in with two hands.

Pinned by Rosa: the desk corner

Five places where the dark seat and the warm wood meet.

  1. Anthracite corduroy

A near-black seat forgives coffee and pen marks in a working room.

  2. Oak lid trim

A thin oak strip puts warm wood right under the dark cushion.

  3. Desk with books

The cushion stays below the desk top so the two pieces don't compete.

  4. Wicker baskets

Woven baskets above repeat the oak and jute warmth.

  5. Jute rug

A natural rug connects the bench zone and the desk zone.

After: why near-black works next to a white desk

The desk is white, the bench is cream, the walls are pale. A light cushion would have melted into all of it. Anthracite draws a line: this side is for sitting, that side is for working.

Look at what holds the dark seat in place. A thin oak strip trims the bench lid, right under the cushion. The same warm wood turns up in the floor and the wicker baskets on the shelf above, and a jute rug ties the bench to the desk. The ceramic lamp throws evening light across the corduroy, and the ribs give it back as texture instead of shine.

The cushion is thick enough for an hour's sitting and still stays below the desk top, so the two pieces never compete. And the practical part, from someone who raised children on corduroy: a near-black seat forgives coffee rings and pen marks that cream would show by Friday. If the office doubles as a guest room, as so many living room and den corners do, that counts twice.

A real project

The green kitchen, three samples later

A buyer in the US had the opposite puzzle. Her window seat sat beside green kitchen cabinets, and the cabinets weren't going anywhere. So she held samples against the doors: emerald velvet, a green corduroy, two soft plain fabrics. All felt substantial, though part of her still wished for a softer green-and-cream stripe.

She chose a 4 x 63.5 x 19 in box cushion in green corduroy with cream piping and a hidden zipper. For the back she asked for a 14 x 63.5 in knife-edge lumbar pillow, flat and tailored, instead of a round bolster. Production took 3 to 5 business days, and the cabinets finally looked planned.

Sizes
Seat 4 x 63.5 x 19 in (10 x 161 x 48 cm); back pillow 14 x 63.5 in (36 x 161 cm)

The lesson: Test samples beside fixed finishes like cabinetry, and say if you want a flat knife-edge back pillow or a round bolster.

If a window bench sits beside a desk, choose a near-black corduroy cushion: it hides the coffee rings and pen marks that a cream seat would show.

Before the makeover: size, foam and cost

  1. A common question

The product page only shows fixed sizes. How do I get my exact size?

    The workshop's answer

Choose the nearest standard size and write your exact numbers; the workshop makes your size. Buyers have ordered 18 x 44 in to get 17 x 45 in, or 14 x 48 in to get 13.5 x 49 in. Larger projects get a custom order link.

  2. A common question

Is the foam high density? I don't want a bench cushion that sags.

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The standard foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density, long-life foam: firm, it holds its shape and doesn't sag with daily use, so there is nothing to upgrade. It is wrapped in polyester fiber (Dacron) for a fuller, softer finish.

  3. A common question

Roughly what would a custom bench cushion cost in my size?

    The workshop's answer

It depends on the size and the fabric: a small piped linen pad and a long corduroy bench cushion sit far apart. Send width, length, thickness and fabric, and you get one figure back.

Questions buyers ask next

Why pick corduroy for a seat in a working room?

Corduroy's ribs turn lamplight into texture rather than shine, and in a near-black shade the fabric hides the coffee rings and pen marks a desk corner collects. It suits a bench that gets sat on for an hour at a time.

Knife-edge lumbar pillow or bolster for a window seat back?

A knife-edge lumbar pillow is flat and tailored and lies neatly against the wall; a bolster is round and reads softer. Say which one you want when you order, with its length matched to the seat below.

How do I compare fabric samples with cabinets or a desk?

Hold each sample against the finish that won't change, once in morning daylight and once under your evening lamp. Colors shift between the two, and the sample that works in both is the one to order.
