Charcoal bench cushions with gray striped back pillows, finished by hand

Three seats, three pillows, one low oak frame. The care is in the parts you only notice when they are wrong.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion set looks calm when its details agree: one back pillow per seat cushion, stripes running the same way on every pillow, and piping that matches a stripe or the closest solid. On this low oak sofa, three charcoal seats carry three gray and white striped pillows, so each module has its own back.

Swatch strip: charcoal, dove, limewash, oak

Five chips from the photograph. Two do the work. Three keep quiet.

  • Dove gray#B8B1ABThe stripe's ground, and the wool rug

What the hands did here

The light comes off limewashed plaster, soft and even. Nothing in this room can hide in a shadow. Every seam shows.

So the details matter. Three charcoal bench cushions sit on a low oak platform. Above them, three loose back pillows in a gray and white stripe. One pillow per seat. Count the seats, count the backs. The numbers agree.

The stripes run the same way on all three pillows and meet the seat line at one height. Cut one pillow a little off and the whole sofa would lean.

The seats are boxed, with self piping. Charcoal carries the weight in a very pale room and forgives daily wear. The stripe repeats both the charcoal and the white wall, so the pillows belong to the seat and to the room. It is a woven chenille, kin to our jacquards and damasks.

The props are few, and placed. A white paper floor lamp repeats the white of the stripe. Stoneware jugs on plaster side tables, one each side, frame the sofa. A gray wool rug keeps the floor as quiet as the walls.

You can copy this without a tall back. Order the pillows like any custom throw pillows, one per seat. How many seats does your bench have?

Three seats. Three backs. Nothing extra.

62 in or 82 in: a window bench misread

A buyer in the US ordered a window bench cushion from handwritten notes. After paying, they looked again. The notes said 62 in. The bench needed 18 x 82 in (46 x 208 cm).

They wrote to the workshop at once. The cushion was made at 82 in, with a second payment link for the longer size.

Craft starts before cutting. A tape, a pencil, and a second look at the pencil. Report a mistake the moment you see it, while it is still only a number.

The lesson: Double-check handwritten measurements before paying, and report a mistake at once while it can still be fixed.

Buyer questions: stripe piping, a third cushion, sun

  1. A common question

Can the piping match one of the colors in my striped fabric?

    The workshop's answer

Often, yes. On one outdoor bench the piping was matched to the gray stripe. When stripes are too thin to cut a solid strip, the workshop picks the closest solid from another chart, such as linen L-43 as piping for striped N23, comparing them in natural light.

  2. A common question

I've already ordered. Can I add another cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Place a separate order for the extra cushion. Once the first is in production, keeping them apart avoids mix-ups with hundreds of orders in the queue. If you haven't ordered yet, the workshop can build one custom link that bundles everything and ships it together.

  3. A common question

The cushion will sit in a sunny window. Will the color fade?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop's answer was that its fabric holds up in sunlight and is not expected to fade, and that it cleans by gentle hand cleaning.

Match the number of back pillows to the number of seat cushions. Three charcoal seats under three striped backs read as one calm sofa.

Questions buyers ask next

Why use loose back pillows instead of one long backrest on a platform sofa?

Loose pillows keep the rhythm of the seats, one back per module, and each can be pulled into a lap or moved. On a low platform they give a sofa look without building a tall fixed back.

What does hand-finishing change on a set of striped pillows?

Alignment, mostly. Placed by hand, stripes can run the same way on every pillow and sit level at the seat line. On a long hand-sewn edge, piping can wander very slightly; that is handwork, not a fault.

Is a dark seat cushion sensible in a very pale room?

Yes. A dark seat carries the visual weight a white room lacks and hides daily wear better than cream. Repeat the dark tone once more, as the stripe does here, so the seat does not float alone.
