Blue and sand stripes on a bare A-frame swing

Before: slats and chains. After: a boxed seat and a split back. Callum reads a garden swing makeover and what it took in inches.

The quick answer

A porch swing cushion for a free-standing A-frame swing should be a boxed seat that fits between the arms at seat level, plus a back split into sections that sit inside the chain line. Split backs are lighter to lift and quicker to dry. In one quote, four back pieces cost the same as one long backrest.

Five pins, from the boxed front edge to the chain line the cushions stay inside.

Before and after, in one frame

Bare slats are honest and hard. Anybody who has sat an hour on an A-frame swing knows the stripes they leave on the backs of your legs.

This one stands under old trees on a shaded lawn, galvanized chains, wooden arms. The makeover is a single porch swing cushion set: one boxed seat and a back in two lengths, in a slate blue, sand and ivory stripe of outdoor acrylic. Self piping, box edge.

The seat is thick enough to soften the slats and still leave the arms useful. The wooden arm lands just above the seat top, so the cushion is framed like a sofa. At the front, the straight box edge and self piping keep the stripes square, and the front edge is where the eye lands first. Stripe layout is covered in which way a stripe should run.

Why a mid-tone stripe under trees

Under a canopy, a swing sees more shade, falling leaves and sap than hard sun. That changes the color choice.

White would show every leaf stain by the weekend. A dark solid would show every grain of pollen. A mid-tone stripe in slate blue and sand hides the small stuff and still looks fresh in dappled light. The ivory stripe keeps it from going heavy.

The back comes in two lengths. Lighter to lift off, quicker to dry after a shower. And everything sits inside the chain line, so nothing rubs as the swing moves.

Before you order, measure between the arms at seat level, then check the chain clearance at the back corners. Those are the two numbers people forget. The porch swing cushion sizes guide lists the rest. What's on your swing right now: bare slats, or an old cushion that slides?

A real project

Seat only, and the question of the back

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a 71.7 in (182 cm) swing. They wanted one seat cushion and back cushions, and weren't sure whether the listing included backs. It didn't; that listing was seat only.

So they asked about the back two ways: four cushions, each 17.9 in wide and 21.7 in tall (45.5 x 55 cm), or one long backrest across the full width. The shop quoted the same total either way, foam inserts and shipping included.

Same money, so decide by handling. Four pieces lift off one at a time, dry faster and stack on a shelf. One long piece gives a cleaner line but wants two people when a squall comes through. Keeping any swing cushion in place is sketched in porch swing cushions that stay put.

Buyer questions: forgotten ties, a size check, a tapered seat

  1. A common question

I forgot to add the non-slip base and ties at checkout. Can I still get them?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Both can be chosen at checkout or paid afterward through a separate link the shop sends. Once a custom payment link is paid it shows as sold out, which simply means the payment went through.

  2. A common question

Before you start, can you confirm you're making my cushion at the right size?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The shop sends a drawing or layout of the agreed dimensions, often converted to centimeters for production accuracy, and makes the cushion exactly to that approved layout.

  3. A common question

My chair seat is wider at the front than the back, about 21 in versus 19 in. Can you make a cushion that shape?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, tapered cushions are routine. Send photos with a tape measure in view. In one case the shop noticed the depth given would leave a gap at the front and made it flush once the buyer agreed. Order through the listing's size range and write exact measurements, fabric code and thickness in personalization.

A swing cushion belongs inside the chain line: measure between the arms at seat level, then check the chain clearance at the back corners.

Questions buyers ask next

Do porch swing cushion listings include a back cushion?

Not always. Some listings are seat only, so check before ordering and ask for the back by size. For a 71.7 in (182 cm) swing, one buyer compared four back pieces with one long backrest before choosing.

How do I measure an A-frame garden swing for cushions?

Measure the seat between the arms at seat level and front to back on the slats, then check the clearance at the back corners where the chains run. The cushion should sit inside the chain line so nothing rubs as it swings.

What swing cushion color holds up best under trees?

A mid-tone, such as a slate blue and sand stripe, hides falling leaves and sap better than white and still looks fresh in dappled shade. Pale solids show marks quickly under a canopy.

Should a swing backrest be one long piece or several sections?

Several sections are lighter to lift and quicker to dry, and in one quote they cost the same as a single long backrest. One piece gives a cleaner line if you rarely take it off.
