The Cutting Table · a common question
Can you make a large U-shaped floor sofa?
Also asked as:A 12-seater with two corner seatsU shape with an ottoman on the other side
A U is two corners and the distance between them. Draw that first, and the order writes itself.
The quick answer
Yes, a large U-shaped floor sofa can be made to order from three modules, with module A, 35.5 x 35.5 in (90 x 90 cm), at every corner. Sketch the room and label each seat by module: B is 47 x 35.5 in (120 x 90 cm), and C is 23.5 x 35.5 in (60 x 90 cm). A custom L plus an extra ottoman also makes a U.

Draw the room before you order the sofa
Take a sheet of paper. Draw the walls. Mark where the U should sit.
Then label every seat. On the boucle modular model there are three modules. A is the square, 35.5 x 35.5 in (90 x 90 cm), and every corner must be an A. B is 47 x 35.5 in (120 x 90 cm). C is 23.5 x 35.5 in (60 x 90 cm). A U has two corners, so it starts with two A modules; B and C fill the runs between them.
One buyer in the US had a 180 x 180 in room. The layout came out as two corners with B modules between them, roughly double the standard set. That is a lot of sofa. Leave a hand's width of floor. Floor sofa height and space helps with the walkways, and modular floor sofa layouts shows more shapes.
Two corners. The runs between them. Everything else is labels.
The 3 floor sofa modules, side by side
| Module | Size | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| A | 35.5 x 35.5 in (90 x 90 cm) | Every corner |
| B | 47 x 35.5 in (120 x 90 cm) | Along the runs between corners |
| C | 23.5 x 35.5 in (60 x 90 cm) | Shorter gaps in a run |
The other way to a U: an L and an ottoman
On the teddy range, the workshop builds a custom-size L-shaped sectional and adds an extra ottoman on the other side. The ottoman closes the shape into a U, and that side stays a separate piece.
A model that has been discontinued can still be made to order, at a higher price. One custom build was quoted at about 1 week to 10 days of making. The modular floor sofas hub shows the current shapes.
Sketching a U the workshop can read
Measure the walls
Note each run the sofa will follow, in inches.
Draw the U
Sketch it on paper, corners and open side included.
Place the corners
Put an A module at each of the two corners.
Fill the runs
Label every other seat B or C so the lengths add up along each run.
Send it with the fabric
Add the model and color, and the workshop quotes the layout.
A U-shaped floor sofa for a 180 x 180 in room came to roughly double the standard set: two corner modules with B modules between them.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Can you make a big U-shaped floor sofa, and how do I describe the layout?
The workshop's answerYes. Draw the layout on paper and label each seat by module: A is 35.5 x 35.5 in (90 x 90 cm) and every corner must be an A, B is 47 x 35.5 in (120 x 90 cm), and C is 23.5 x 35.5 in (60 x 90 cm). For a 180 x 180 in room, a U with two corners and B modules between them came to about double the standard set.
- A common question
Could I get a custom-size L-shaped floor sofa plus an ottoman to make a U?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop can build a custom-size L-shaped sectional and add an extra ottoman on the other side to create a U-shaped layout.
- A common question
What's the difference between an open and a closed corner?
The workshop's answerA closed corner ends in an L-shaped backrest that wraps the end; an open corner ends in a straight backrest, leaving it open like a chaise. Ask for an open end in the order note or add a straight backrest.
- A common question
What size is the floor sofa in the photos, and what fits three people?
The workshop's answerThe photos mostly show 28 x 56 in (70 x 140 cm); some show 28 x 60 or 28 x 64 in. For three people, choose 28 x 64 in. Any length can be made to order.
Questions buyers ask next
Can I still order a floor sofa model that has been discontinued?
Often, yes: a discontinued model has been made to order at a higher price, and the making time comes with the quote. Name the model in your message so the right pattern is used.
How many support bars come with a bigger layout?
It depends on the set: a single teddy sofa includes 4 bars, a 3-seater 5, the L-shape with ottoman 6, and a full corner set 8 large plus 8 small pieces. Missing bars: send a photo, and get the workshop's answer in writing.
Which fabrics do the U-shaped layouts come in?
The A, B and C modules belong to the boucle modular model, while the L-plus-ottoman route uses the teddy range. Name the model and color on your sketch so the quote matches the right system.
