What should you ask about a custom cushion or floor sofa warranty?

Also asked as:What are your warranty terms? Is there a guarantee?

Every seam closed by hand is a promise. Here's what to ask before the fabric is cut, and what to do the day the box opens.

The quick answer

Warranty terms for custom cushions and floor sofas come from the workshop, not from this site, so ask for them in writing before you order and keep that message. If a floor sofa bar arrives damaged or missing, photograph it the day the box opens and message the workshop with the photo. Stains and misuse are a separate conversation from a manufacturing defect.

Key facts

  • A manufacturing defect is a fault in how the piece was made, such as a bar damaged in the box or a seam sewn wrong.
  • Photograph a damaged or missing floor sofa bar the day the box opens, and message the workshop with the photo.
  • A floor sofa's 4 metal bars travel in their own box of about 15.75 x 15.75 x 2 in (40 x 40 x 5 cm) and about 9 lb (4 kg), so check that box before reporting a missing bar.
  • Replacement sofa bars come in standard sizes, in silver/chrome only.
  • Spare tufting buttons are included in the box, so a loose button is usually a home fix.
  • Stains, spills and misuse are a different conversation from a manufacturing defect.

Have Harlan’s workshop cut this for you

Old upholsterers will tell you the real cutting happens in the conversation, long before the shears come out. Tell the workshop what you sit on, and they will talk it through with you. — Harlan

A seam is a promise; the warranty terms are the workshop's

A warranty against manufacturing defects is about how the piece was made, and the terms are the workshop's to set. So before the fabric is cut, ask in messages what it covers, for how long and on which pieces, and keep the reply with your order. A promise you can scroll back to is worth two you remember.

Then the day the box opens, look everything over. If a floor sofa bar arrives bent, or you can't find one, check the separate bar box first, then photograph what you have and message the workshop with the photo. Just show them, my friend. A stain, a spill or a chair leg dragged across the seat is a different conversation from a seam that was sewn wrong, and it goes better when you say plainly which one it is.

Bars come in standard sizes and in silver/chrome only; the floor sofa support bars Pattern shows where each one goes, and metal support bars are defined in the glossary. For buttons, tufted cushion care covers the home fix, and stain first aid covers the spill. The sofas themselves live under modular floor sofas.

What piece in your house has outlasted its warranty by twenty years?

A promise you can scroll back to is worth two you remember, so keep the workshop's reply with your order confirmation.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Do the cushions come with any warranty?

    The workshop's answer

The terms are the workshop's to state, so the useful move is knowing what to ask: how long they run, which faults count as manufacturing defects, whether bars and covers are included, and what it needs to see, usually a photo in messages. Keep the reply with your order confirmation.

  2. A common question

Is the floor sofa itself covered?

    The workshop's answer

It depends on the workshop's terms, so ask whether the sofa, its covers and its bars fall under the same terms as a single cushion. What applies either way: the bars travel in their own box of about 15.75 x 15.75 x 2 in (40 x 40 x 5 cm), so check it, then photograph a damaged or missing bar the day the box opens and message the workshop with the photo.

  3. A common question

A tufting button came off, or it's the wrong color. How do I fix it?

    The workshop's answer

Sew it back on with the spare buttons included in every order; the workshop sends a video showing how to thread the string. Wrong-color buttons can be fixed with matching button covers.

  4. A common question

Can I buy just the metal bars without the sofa?

    The workshop's answer

Not as a standalone product. Owners can get replacement bars, and bars can be added to a covers-only order. They come in standard sizes, in silver/chrome only; ask in messages for a quote.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I report a defect to the workshop?

Send two clear photos in messages, one close-up of the fault and one of the whole piece from about 3 feet (1 m) back, with a line on what arrived and what's wrong. For a damaged or missing floor sofa bar, take them the day the box opens, after checking the separate bar box. What happens next follows the workshop's own terms, so keep its reply.

Is the warranty the same for a cushion and a floor sofa?

Not necessarily: a floor sofa has parts a cushion doesn't, the metal bars and several covers, so ask whether those fall under the same terms as a single cushion before you order. Bars can be replaced in standard sizes, in silver/chrome only, which is worth knowing whatever the terms say.

Is a stain or misuse a warranty problem?

Treat it as a different conversation. A manufacturing defect is a fault in how the piece was made, such as a bar damaged in the box or a seam sewn wrong. Stains, spills and wear from use are yours to handle first, and a loose tufting button is usually fixed at home with the spare buttons in the box.
