Sky stripe, sage check, gray stripe: outdoor bench cushions through four seasons
Callum stacks three water-repellent patio cushions on sandstone by the lavender and follows them from the first spring morning to winter storage.
A cool-toned trio for comparison: sky stripe, sage micro-check and gray stripe, each shown as a flat strip on the right.
The quick answer
A mixed set of outdoor bench cushions in stripes and a small check works through every season when each cushion shares one gusset height and self piping, the fabric is a water-repellent outdoor weave, and long seats are split in two for winter storage. Cool blues, sage and gray read fresh in July and calm in October.
Three cushions, one family, read at a glance
A cushion set gets judged four times a year, once by each season. This one starts well.
Three box cushions sit stacked on sandstone in front of a lavender border. Top, a sky-blue stripe, wide and confident. Middle, a sage micro-check so small it reads almost solid from a step back. Bottom, a gray awning stripe the same width as the blue. Flat strips of each fabric lie to the right so you can see the weave up close.
The design rule fits in one line: keep the colors cool, change the scale. Two stripes of one width with a tiny check between them is an old trick, and it works because nothing fights. Every cushion shares one gusset height and self piping, so the stack reads as a family, not three separate purchases.
The setting matters. Sandstone and lavender warm the blues and grays a touch, which is closer to how they'll look on a sunny patio than on a white studio table. Hold your swatches against your own paving at noon, friend, not against the kitchen counter. Which corner of your yard takes the noon sun?
The cloth is a water-repellent membrane weave, codes HM-01, HM-03 and HM-24. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Know which one you're buying, and read the difference between them before a July storm explains it for you.

Read the stack top to bottom, sky stripe, sage check, gray stripe, then check the flat strip on the right for the weave and the lavender behind for the warmth.

Spring to first frost on the same stone
Spring: the first morning out
Lift the set out of storage on a dry day, brush off the dust and let it air. Sage and sky blue look crisp against new lavender growth. This is when you see whether a cushion came through winter flat or full.
Summer: high sun on pale stone
Sandstone throws glare back at the cushions. Cool colors keep the set looking fresh when the paving is bright. After a thunderstorm, stand each cushion on its edge so water runs off instead of sitting on top.
Fall: dew and fallen leaves
Dew lingers as the nights draw in. Tip the cushions up or bring them under cover overnight, and brush leaves off before they sit wet on the fabric.
Winter: store them dry
Before the first frost, bring the set indoors, clean and dry. Split cushions fit a closet shelf or a garage bin far better than one long slab. The winter storage pattern has the checklist.
An 88-inch bench seat cut in half for the off-season
A buyer messaged the workshop about a long outdoor bench, 20.5 x 87.8 in (52 x 223 cm). They wanted the seat cushion in a blue stripe, code M16, 4 in (10 cm) thick, split into two pieces so it would be easier to store. That made two cushions of 20.5 x 43.9 in (52 x 111.5 cm) each.
They asked for piping close to the lighter blue in the stripe, and the shop matched it with a solid, code T-32. The order went through the product page like any other.
I'd have given the same advice unasked. One 88-inch cushion is a wrestling match every October. Two halves go under one arm each, stand on end to drain and slide onto a shelf. If your bench is long, plan the split in the bench cushion builder and browse the outdoor cushion atlas for layouts.
Three weather-side questions
- A common question
Do you have a striped fabric that can live outdoors?
The workshop's answerNot in the N-series cotton stripes: those are 100% cotton, so they are indoor only, and that range has no two-color outdoor combinations. For a striped look outside, the outdoor charts include stripes such as V-38, a water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor stripe.
- A common question
We're ordering a big set of outdoor cushions. Is there a discount for a large order?
The workshop's answerYes. Large multi-cushion sets are quoted at a flat price below the combined list price. A far-off destination with costly shipping can push that quote back up a little.
- A common question
Are your prices in US dollars?
The workshop's answerYes, prices are set in US dollars. If you pay in another currency, the marketplace converts the amount to your currency at checkout.

Questions buyers ask next
Can stripes and a check be mixed on the same outdoor bench?
Yes. Keep every color in one cool family and change the scale: a wide stripe, a small check, another stripe of the same width. Give each cushion the same gusset height and piping style so the set reads as planned rather than collected.
Why cut a long outdoor bench cushion into two halves?
Handling and storage. A seat close to 88 in long is awkward to carry, stand up to drain or fit on a shelf. Two halves of about 44 in each go in and out easily, and the join sits at the middle of the bench.
Do cool-toned fabrics look different outdoors than on a swatch card?
Usually a little warmer. Sandstone, brick and flowers reflect warm light onto the fabric, so blues and grays soften outside. Check swatches against your own paving in midday light before deciding on a color.
