Anatomy of an ivory garden bench cushion, and the order message behind it

Rough timber, an ivory seat, an ivory back, wisteria overhead. It looks easy at dusk. What made it easy was a clear order, and that is the part worth copying.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion with a matching backrest turns a plain timber bench into an evening seat, and ivory is the color that still reads after dark under string lights. To get it right the first time, send the bench size, thickness, fabric code, piping code and any non-slip base in one message, then measure the cushions the day they arrive.

The cushion, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

Pinned by Callum: five points from gravel to canopy

Five pins, from the ivory seat and its matching back down to the reclaimed timber and up to the wisteria.

  1. Ivory seat cushion

The seat covers the full bench depth, so rough timber never touches clothing.

  2. Matching backrest cushion

A matching back cushion turns a plain bench into a two-seat sofa.

  3. Wisteria pergola canopy

Purple overhead is the only strong color, so the cushions stay neutral.

  4. Candle and wine

Low warm light makes the ivory glow after sunset.

  5. Reclaimed timber frame

Rough dark wood makes the crisp cushion edges look even sharper.

Why ivory, and why it holds after dark

This bench gets used after sunset. That decided the color before anything else did.

Under festoon lights and a candle in amber glass, ivory glows. A darker fabric would slip into shadow once the sun is down, and you would be sitting on a hole in the picture. The only strong color here is the wisteria overhead, so the cushions stay neutral and let the canopy do the talking.

The seat covers the full depth of the bench, front edge to back rail, so rough reclaimed timber never snags a sweater. The back cushion matches the seat in fabric and edge, and together they turn a plain bench into a two-seat sofa. Crisp box edges against rough dark wood make the tailoring look sharper than it is.

The props are the kit for an evening. Books and a glass of red wine on a weathered side table. A candle on a pewter plate. Ferns, hydrangeas and lavender at the edges, pea gravel underfoot. None of it sits on the cushion, which is how it should be outside: things that spill stay on the table.

No backrest on your bench? A back cushion can hang by ties from a frame, a post or wall hooks at the right height; the sizing is in back cushion height. The fabric comes from the outdoor acrylic family. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract, and the difference is spelled out in water-repellent vs waterproof.

The order message, line by line

  1. Measure the frame itself

Seat length and depth, plus the height the back cushion should cover. Inches first, centimeters beside them.

  2. Name the thickness, and check the piping trade-off

Very thin cushions give up piping. On one pair, 3/4 in (2 cm) was only possible without it.

  3. Give both codes on one line

Fabric code and piping code together, such as linen L-04 with 110 dark brown piping. A color name alone is a guess.

  4. Ask for close-ups of the neighbors

Torn between two codes? Ask for daylight photos of both shades side by side before production.

  5. Say which cushions get a non-slip base

Seat, back or both. It is chosen in Add Personalization.

  6. Measure on arrival

Tape every cushion the day it lands and send the number if one is off.

A real project

Two small benches and a 15-inch surprise

A buyer messaged the workshop with two small benches, 29 1/2 x 13 3/4 in (75 x 35 cm) and 19 3/4 x 13 3/4 in (50 x 35 cm). The worry was thickness: the standard 2 in seemed too thick for seats that small.

Sample photos settled it. The shop explained that 3/4 in (2 cm) is only possible without piping, so the buyer chose about 1 1/4 in (3 cm) with piping, at 29 1/8 x 13 3/8 in (74 x 34 cm) and 19 1/4 x 13 3/8 in (49 x 34 cm). Fabric: linen L-04. Piping: 110 dark brown. Every code written down.

The large cushion was right. The small one arrived at 15 in (38 cm) instead of 19 1/4 in (49 cm). The buyer measured it, sent the number, and the shop remade it immediately. That is the lesson, friend: a clear order makes the fix quick, and a tape measure on delivery day catches what slips through.

Buyer questions: grip, color and thickness

  1. A common question

What is the non-slip base, exactly, and are there different kinds?

    The workshop's answer

The underside of the cover is made from a grippy non-slip fabric instead of the regular fabric, which stops the cushion sliding on a bench or chair. It is built into the cover, not a separate pad, and there are no sub-options: you simply select it in Add Personalization when you order.

  2. A common question

My cushion looks much lighter than the swatch I picked. Did I get the wrong color?

    The workshop's answer

The shop checks your photos first, because daylight can make the top of a cushion look lighter than its shaded sides. If the code is right, it may still remake the cover as a goodwill gesture if you cover the shipping, and it sends close-ups of the neighboring shades, such as 944 next to 945, so you can choose.

  3. A common question

My dining bench is already at seat height. How thick should the cushion be?

    The workshop's answer

For everyday seating the shop generally recommends 4 in (10 cm), and 3 in (7.5 cm) is the most popular choice. For a bench already 17 in (43 cm) high, 2 in (5 cm) was chosen to keep the table height comfortable; the medium-hard high-density foam barely sinks.

If a bench cushion is used after dark, choose ivory. It glows under string lights, where a darker fabric disappears into the shadows.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a backrest cushion work on a bench that has no back?

Yes. A back cushion can hang by ties from a frame, a post or wall hooks set at the right height. Match it to the seat in fabric and edge so the pair reads as one small sofa rather than two separate pieces.

Why pick ivory for a garden bench used in the evening?

Ivory holds light. Under string lights and candlelight it stays visible after sunset, when darker fabrics fade into shadow. It also stays calm beneath a strong color overhead, such as a wisteria canopy, so the planting leads.

What should an order message for a custom bench cushion include?

Seat length and depth, thickness, fabric code, piping code, any non-slip base, and for backs the height to cover. Write inches with centimeters beside them and keep everything in one message so nothing gets lost between replies.
