A camel corduroy window seat cushion in a dusty blue room, and the hand-finishing behind it

Rosa writes from the front step about a warm cushion in a cool room, and the small tailor's choices you only notice when somebody skips them.

Camel against dusty blue is a warm-cool pairing that makes both colors look softer.

The quick answer

A corduroy window seat cushion looks hand-finished when the wide ribs run front to back, so the texture wraps the front face and corners, and the edge is self-piped in the same corduroy. Camel against dusty blue walls is a warm-cool pairing that softens both. Very long seats can be made in one piece, like a 117 3/4 in (299 cm) cushion.

Neighbor,

A letter about a camel corduroy window seat

Pull up a chair. I want to tell you about a window seat that did everything right, and I want you to notice the parts nobody photographs on purpose.

It's a long painted bench with an oak top, the same dusty blue as the walls, and on it sits a thick camel corduroy cushion. Camel against blue is warm meeting cool. Each makes the other look softer, the way porch light looks kinder against an evening sky.

Now look at the ribs. Wide wale, running front to back. That's a tailor's decision, not an accident. This way the ribs roll over the edge and down the front, so the texture is the first thing you see when you walk in. At the rounded front corner, they wrap around like a porch rail worn smooth by hands.

The piping is self piping, camel on camel. It keeps the edge crisp, so the cushion looks like upholstery and not a pad somebody set down. And it's generously thick, which reads as an invitation. My grandmother used to say a window seat nobody sits in is just a shelf.

The pillows each have a job. The dusty blue one ties to the walls; the chocolate one ties to the brown sofa across the room. The round rattan mirror repeats the camel up high, and the olive tree in terracotta puts something alive between bench and sofa. Books and a mug on the sill tell every visitor what the seat is for. The jute rug keeps it barefoot-friendly.

If your room is painted a cool mid-tone, a sandy corduroy will soften it straight away. What color is the wall behind your window seat?

There's more in the window seat cushion atlas, among living room cushions and in our corduroy swatches. The rib question is answered properly in corduroy wale and nap direction.

Hand-finishing to ask for on a corduroy seat

  • Ribs running front to back, so the wale rolls over the front face.
  • A wrapped rounded front corner, with the ribs following the curve.
  • Self piping laid straight along the edge, with no wobble at the corners.
  • A non-tufted top when you want a sleek, unbroken surface.
  • Enough thickness that the cushion reads as a seat from across the room.
  • One long piece when you want no seam across the middle of the seat.
A real project

Nearly ten feet of water-green corduroy

One buyer wrote in about two cushions in water-green corduroy, both non-tufted. One for a bay window, 24 3/8 x 117 3/4 in (62 x 299 cm). One for the floor, 39 3/8 x 39 3/8 in (100 x 100 cm). That's nearly ten feet of window cushion in a single piece.

The shop confirmed it could make both. Then, right in the middle of it all, the listing link went offline for an update, and the shop sent a working link again so the order could go through. I ran my own shop for twenty years, and people remember the small courtesies longer than the big promises.

The lesson I'd write on the back of an envelope: very long window cushions can be made in one piece to order, and a non-tufted finish suits a sleek look. On a long run of corduroy, one piece keeps every rib unbroken.

Buyer questions: corners, fillings and L-shapes

  1. A common question

One corner section of my bench doesn't lift with the rest. Do I need a third cushion for it?

    The workshop's answer

The shop can make all three sections, the small one included. Confirm if your numbers are in centimeters or inches, and send the length, depth and thickness of each section, ideally with a photo or a simple drawing.

  2. A common question

For a really thick backrest, is foam or silicone ball filling better?

    The workshop's answer

Foam. A non-tufted backrest 12 to 14 in (30 to 35 cm) thick can't hold its shape with silicone balls, so the shop cuts foam as a wedge, for example 12 in (30 cm) deep at the bottom and 8 in (20 cm) at the top. Silicone ball fill suits round arm bolsters.

  3. A common question

Should my L-shaped bench cushion be one piece or two?

    The workshop's answer

Usually two, for a better fit and easier handling, though the shop can make it your way. Send a sketch of the layout with measurements, for example 63 x 72 in (160 x 183 cm) with a 20 in (51 cm) depth, and say if you need back cushions too.

Run corduroy ribs front to back on a window seat cushion, and the wale rolls over the edge and down the front face, where everyone who walks in will see it.

Questions buyers ask next

Should corduroy ribs run lengthwise or front to back on a window seat?

Front to back, in most cases. The ribs then roll over the front edge, so the texture shows on the face people see first. Running them lengthwise leaves the front with flat horizontal lines.

What colors go with a camel corduroy cushion?

Cool mid-tones like dusty blue make camel look warmer and softer. Chocolate brown, rattan, terracotta and jute keep the palette natural, as in this room, where one blue and one brown pillow tie the seat to walls and sofa.

Tufted or plain for a corduroy window seat?

Plain, if you want a sleek look. A non-tufted top keeps the ribs running unbroken from back to front. Tufting adds buttons and dimples, which suit a more traditional room.
