A letter about a rust window seat cushion on whitewashed stone, and what's worth the money

Spend on the part you sit on, save on the part you look at. This little stone alcove makes the case better than I can.

On a lime-washed masonry ledge, a rust cushion brings the warmth of island pottery indoors.

The quick answer

On a custom window seat cushion, spend on fit and body: measurements taken at several points and a firm box cushion that bridges an uneven top. Save on styling, since a linen cloth, a clay jug and a striped rug can do the decorating. Before paying, confirm whether a listing is the whole piece or one component.

Dear neighbor,

A letter about a stone ledge and a rust cushion

Folks ask me where the money should go on a window seat, and I've been saving this photograph to answer them. It's a whitewashed stone alcove in an island house somewhere warm, a small arched window full of bougainvillea and sea, and one rust window seat cushion doing a hard job with no fuss at all.

Hand-plastered stone is never flat. So the cushion is a firm box, with enough body to bridge the dips in the ledge and keep its top level, and a self-piped edge pulled tight. That firmness is where I'd spend. A soft cushion would sink into every hollow of that stone. Measure a ledge like this at several points along the length and depth, because hand-built benches are rarely square; our window seat measuring guide walks you through it.

The rust sits right between the pink bougainvillea outside and the clay inside: a terracotta jug of dark figs on the seat, a few loose figs beside it, and a tall amphora of dried wildflowers at the far end, giving the low bench a vertical partner. A linen cloth drapes over the front edge to break that long straight line and hint at softness. A small carved wooden cross hangs above, the room's one personal note. Underfoot, a rust and cream striped flatweave repeats the cushion color in a lighter dose.

Now look at that styling again. A cloth, a clay jug, dried flowers, a bowl of fruit. None of it is custom. That's where I'd save.

More seats like this live in our window seat cushions, and textured cloths in the bouclé and teddy library. So tell me, what's your window seat built from: stone, pine or painted cupboards?

Pinned by Rosa: five things on the ledge

  1. Rust box cushion

Firm box foam bridges the uneven top of a hand-plastered stone bench.

  2. Clay jug of figs

Terracotta pottery on the seat matches the rust fabric tone for tone.

  3. Draped linen cloth

Linen over the front edge breaks the cushion's long straight line.

  4. Amphora of wildflowers

A tall pot at the end gives the low bench a vertical partner.

  5. Striped flatweave

Rust stripes repeat the cushion color in a lighter dose underfoot.

Where I'd put the money, in order

  • Measurements taken at several points along the length and depth, because stone benches are rarely square.
  • A firm box cushion with enough body to bridge an uneven top.
  • The right thickness, confirmed in writing, so your note and your selected option agree.
  • A non-slip base if the cushion tends to get pushed around.
  • Reading exactly what a listing covers before you pay: one piece, or the whole set.
A real project

The backrest that wasn't a sofa

A buyer in the US chose the “straight backrest” option, thinking it meant the whole sofa with a straight back. What came to their door was one backrest, 39 x 15 x 15 in (99 x 38 x 38 cm).

Sending it back would have cost far more in shipping than made any sense. The shop offered the rest of the sofa at a discount, and that was still over budget. In the end they kept the backrest and got a partial refund, and I hope it's propping somebody up on a couch right now.

I don't tell this to scold anybody. When components and whole sets sit side by side in a listing, careful people get tripped up. Before you pay, write down what you think you're getting and ask the workshop to confirm it. Our notes on what to send for a quote help.

Buyer questions: thickness, backrests and a non-slip base

  1. A common question

My order note says one thickness, but the option I picked says another. Which will you make?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop spots the mismatch and asks before starting. In one order the note said 4 in (10 cm) but the 5 in (12.5 cm) option was selected; since 4 in is the standard, they checked, and the buyer confirmed 5 in.

  2. A common question

When I size backrest cushions to sit above a seat cushion, do I take off the seat thickness?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Subtract the seat cushion's thickness, for example 4 in (10 cm), from the backrest height so the pieces fit without pushing each other out. A quick sketch helps confirm the final sizes.

  3. A common question

Can you add a non-slip base to a window seat cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. An anti-skid fabric can be sewn onto the bottom panel. It's available on corduroy or linen cushions, and on covers-only orders.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does a stone window seat need a firm box cushion?

Hand-built masonry is rarely flat or square. A firm box cushion has enough body to bridge the dips in the top, so the seat looks level and sits evenly even when the stone underneath does not.

How do I measure a masonry window seat?

Measure length and depth at several points, not once at each end, because hand-plastered stone benches are rarely square. Send every number to the workshop so it can see where the ledge narrows.

Does a rust cushion work in an all-white room?

It's warm without shouting. Here rust sits between the pink bougainvillea outside and the clay pottery inside, and a striped rug repeats it underfoot in a lighter dose, so the color never stands alone.
