The Cutting Table · a common question

Can a floor sofa be made taller or lower?

Also asked as:Can I add two extra base cushions to make it taller?Could you make the sofa a bit taller?

Yes, in both directions. Height is a feeling, and on a floor sofa it comes from the number of cushions under you.

The quick answer

Yes: stack an extra base cushion to make a floor sofa taller, or order it with one floor cushion instead of two to make it lower. When stacking, keep the metal bars on the first base cushion, not on the floor. An ottoman with two L-shaped backrests is another low option. Extra base cushions cost less per piece in pairs.

Where the bars stand when you stack

The metal bars hold the backrests up. They work from what they stand on.

Set on the first base cushion, they still do their job on a stacked sofa. Standing on the floor beneath three cushions, they may not. The seat has moved up; the bars have not.

The support bars pattern shows how they fit, and raising a floor sofa's seat covers the other options. Try the seat height calculator before you order a second layer.

How to make a floor sofa lower: one cushion instead of two

Some people want the floor itself. One floor cushion instead of two gives them that. An ottoman with two L-shaped backrests is lower and looser still.

Do you sit cross-legged, or with your feet flat on the floor? That answer picks the layer count. Browse the modular floor sofas with it in mind.

Two layers for most rooms.

One for the floor sitters.

Three for knees that ask for more.

A floor sofa goes lower with one floor cushion instead of two, and taller with an extra base cushion stacked underneath.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can I stack two extra base cushions to make the floor sofa taller?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Extra base cushions are sold per piece, with a lower price for two. The metal bars still work if they sit on the first base cushion; standing on the floor under three stacked cushions, they may not.

  2. A common question

Can the sofa be made a bit taller?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Buy an extra base cushion and stack it to raise the seat.

  3. A common question

Can the sofa come with one floor cushion instead of two, for a lower seat?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, it can be made that way. Another option is to order just an ottoman plus two L-shaped backrests.

  4. A common question

Can I get the floor sofa bars in gold or black?

    The workshop's answer

No. The support bars come only in chrome/silver steel, whatever the sofa color. Gold, brass, black and wooden bases aren't available.

Questions buyers ask next

Can guests sleep on a floor sofa?

Yes. Laid flat, the teddy floor sofa gives a surface of roughly 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm), about king size, on 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³) cold foam. Two adults can share it, and buyers use it for guest stays of several weeks.

Can a floor sofa wrap around a room in a U?

Yes. Sketch the room and label each seat: A is about 35 x 35 in (90 x 90 cm) and goes at every corner, B about 47 x 35 in (120 x 90 cm), C about 24 x 35 in (60 x 90 cm). An ottoman can extend an L.

How do I work out the seat height I'll get?

Seat height is whatever sits underneath plus the cushion thickness: a 15 in bench with a 3 in cushion sits at 18 in. On a floor sofa, add up the layers you stack and measure from the floor.
