The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

Two tufting buttons came off my cushion. What do I do with the string?

A loose button is a squall, not a shipwreck. The spares are already in your box, and there is a video for the string.

The quick answer

Sew the tufting button back on with one of the spare buttons included in every order. The workshop sends a short video showing how to thread the connecting string back through the cushion and reattach the button properly. If your buttons arrived in the wrong color, white where the photos showed dark brown, the shop can send button covers in the matching color.

“Two buttons came off. Is the cushion done for?”

No. When a cleat works loose on a dock, you don't pull up the dock. Same here. A tufting button is held by a connecting string that runs through the cushion, and when one lets go, the cushion underneath is fine.

Look in the packaging first. Every order ships with spare buttons, so the part you need is usually already in the house.

“What do I do with the string?”

This is the question buyers ask right after the first one, and it's the right one. Don't cut it and don't guess. Ask the workshop for the repair video: it shows how to thread the connecting string and set the button back where it belongs, so the tuft sits even with its neighbors.

When a buyer asked for a tutorial, the shop offered to make one. The tufted cushion care Pattern covers the rest of the upkeep. How many buttons has yours lost so far?

“The photos showed brown. Mine came white.”

A buyer in the US opened the box to white buttons where the listing showed dark brown. No remake. The shop offered to send brown covers for the buttons so the cushion matched the photos.

That's the whole fix, friend. A tufted piece among the floor cushions is meant to be mended, not replaced. If you're still choosing, the tufted versus plain Pattern lays out what buttons ask of you.

Wrong-color tufting buttons don't need a new cushion: if they arrive white instead of dark brown, button covers in the right color fix the look.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

A couple of the tufting buttons came off. How do I repair them?

    The workshop's answer

Sew them back on. The workshop sends a video showing how to thread the connecting string and reattach each button properly.

  2. A common question

One button fell off after light use. Can I put it back myself?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every order ships with spare buttons, and the shop offered to make a video tutorial showing how to sew one back on.

  3. A common question

My tufting buttons are white, but the photos showed dark brown. Can that be fixed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The shop offered to send brown covers for the buttons so they match the photos.

  4. A common question

Can a bench cushion be tufted and piped at the same time?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Tufting is free when you request it in the personalization box, and it can be combined with piping. The button count depends on the size. Tufted covers are stitched through, so they aren't removable or washable.

Questions buyers ask next

Where do I find the spare buttons?

Spare tufting buttons ship with every order, so check the packaging before you ask for more. Keep them with the cushion once you find them. If a button lets go later, the workshop can walk you through the repair with its video.

Can a tufted cover be taken off to wash it?

No. Tufted covers are stitched straight through the cushion, so they aren't removable or machine washable. Spot-clean them in place instead, working around the buttons rather than scrubbing over them.

Can the button color be changed after the cushion arrives?

In effect, yes. The shop can send button covers in a different color. It did exactly that when a buyer's buttons came white instead of the dark brown shown in the listing photos, so the finished cushion matched what was ordered.
