# A zebra-stripe bench cushion by the French doors, and the arithmetic of thickness

*Nate reads the palette first and the proportions second: black, white and a little oak, and one number that decides how the bench will sit.*

> **The quick answer:** Cushion thickness adds straight onto seat height: a 4 in (10 cm) cushion on a storage bench raises the seat by about 4 in, less a little sink when someone sits. Four inches is the workshop standard; 2 and 3 in suit tall benches, and 5 in and up suit low ones. Measure the bench top height before you choose.

The print does the talking and the pillows stay plain.")

## Six chips from the French-door corner

- Zebra black — #1C1C1C — The stripe's ink. Repeated once in the lumbar pillow and once in the line art, never more.
- Chalk white — #F1EFE9 — The stripe's ground, carried over the piped front edge with the black.
- Blue-gray wall — #B7C1C8 — Cool enough to let the white read clean in morning light.
- Oak trim — #C9A675 — The only wood, and it stops exactly where the cushion stops.
- Tan round — #B8895A — The single warm curve in a room of straight lines.
- Shag cream — #ECE5D5 — The rug softens the floor under a very graphic seat.

## Proportion: the stripe tells on the thickness

An engineer's confession: I read the zebra print first and the numbers second, because the print gives the numbers away.

The bench cushion runs the full length of the bench and stops dead at the oak edge. No overhang, no gap. Because the stripes carry over the piped front edge, the box side reads as part of the same graphic, which means you can see the thickness from across the room. A thin pad would show a sliver of stripe; a tall one, a wall of it. This one sits in between: enough boxing for the pattern to wrap, not so much that the seat climbs toward the balcony rail.

That is the question every bench asks: where does the seat end up? The arithmetic is simple, partner. Seat height equals bench top plus cushion thickness, less a little sink under load.

- 16 in (41 cm) bench + 2 in (5 cm) pad = 18 in (46 cm)
- 16 in (41 cm) bench + 4 in (10 cm) cushion = 20 in (51 cm)
- 18 in (46 cm) bench + 4 in (10 cm) cushion = 22 in (56 cm)

Depth matters as much. A deep seat under a thin pad feels like a ledge; a shallow seat under a thick cushion tips you forward. Run your own numbers in the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) or the [thickness and seat height pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-thickness-seat-height-calculator/).

The props follow the same discipline. The black lumbar sits low so the print still shows. The round tan pillow is the one warm curve. The framed line art repeats the stripe's curves, so it looks chosen for the bench, and the sheer curtain filters the morning light so black and white don't shout. What does your bench top measure from the floor?

## Pinned by Nate: five coordinates

Five coordinates, from the stripe wrapping the box edge to the line art that copies its curves.

1. **Zebra stripe box edge**: The stripes carry over the piped front edge, so from the side the cushion reads as one continuous graphic.
2. **Black lumbar pillow**: A plain black oblong repeats the darkest stripe and stays low so the print still shows.
3. **Round tan pillow**: The one warm, curved shape in a room of straight black and white lines.
4. **Geometric line art**: The framed black lines copy the curve of the zebra stripes, so the wall art looks chosen for the bench.
5. **Sheer curtain light**: Filtered light from the French doors softens the strong contrast of the print.

## Two of the short size, one labeled 'back'

A buyer sent a photo of a corner kitchen bench with every length written in millimeters. They wanted two seat cushions and one back cushion on the shorter side, all in a patterned fabric coded P66.

The back cushion happened to match the short seat's size. So the shop's advice was clean: order two of the short size and write in the notes that one of them is the back. One listing, one size, no new pattern to draft.

Then came the piping. The shop sent sharper images of the fabric so the buyer could pick a welt matching the pattern's lighter tone. They chose P67.

Two lines for the notebook. Identical sizes are identical cushions, so label the job instead of redrawing it. And pick piping from a close, clear photo of the print, not a thumbnail. Tolerance is kindness to your future self. For corners like this one, see [L-shaped bench cushion measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-bench-cushion-measurements/), and browse more in [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/).

## On the cutting table: the zebra box

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Box-edge bench cushion, full bench length, no overhang |
| Fabric | Black and white zebra print on cotton canvas |
| Piping | Self piping; the stripe carries over the welt |
| Standard thickness | 4 in (10 cm); 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in also quoted |
| Seat height rule | Bench top + cushion thickness, less a little sink |
| After delivery | Allow 48 to 72 hours for vacuum-packed foam to recover |
| Pillows | Plain black lumbar, ivory square, round tan |
| Best for | Storage benches by doors and windows, graphic modern rooms |

## Buyer questions: size, spare backs and a short arrival

**A common question:** Can you make a cushion to my exact size, even if it's longer than 78 3/4 in (200 cm)?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Everything is cut to exact measurements, and going past 78 3/4 in (200 cm) is no problem. For a rectangle, choose the size range that covers yours and type the exact numbers in the personalization box. For a trapezoid or angled shape, use the custom-shape listing with the longest edge as the length, pick the depth, and upload your drawing.

**A common question:** Can I buy extra straight or L-shaped backrest cushions on their own?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, every piece is sold separately, and a new backrest can be matched to the color of an earlier order. When a contractor damaged a buyer's two L-shaped backrests, the shop set up a dedicated link to remake just those two in navy.

**A common question:** My cushion measures shorter than I ordered and the bolster looks flat. Is something wrong?

**The workshop's answer:** Probably not yet. Cushions and pillows are vacuum-packed for shipping, so they arrive compressed. Give the foam 48 to 72 hours, sometimes 3 to 4 days, to expand fully, then measure again. If it is still off, send a photo of it being measured and the shop will sort it out.

> A 4 in cushion on a 16 in bench makes a 20 in seat before anyone sits, so measure the bench top height before you choose the thickness.

> **Tailor's margin:** Vacuum-packed foam can measure short on day one. Wait 48 to 72 hours, then re-measure and photograph the tape.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a bold zebra print suit a small storage bench?

It can, if everything around it stays plain. Keep the pillows solid, repeat the print's black in just one piece of art, and let the cushion end exactly at the bench edge so the stripe reads as one clean graphic.

### Should a bench cushion overhang the bench top?

For a crisp look like this one, no: the cushion stops flush with the oak edge. An overhang softens the front but hides the bench's lines and can catch the backs of knees. Measure the bench top itself, edge to edge.

### How does seat depth change the right cushion thickness?

You sit back into a deep seat, so it usually wants a thicker cushion; a shallow seat under a tall cushion pushes you toward the front edge. Compare the depth and height with a chair you already find comfortable before choosing.
