# A yellow striped L-shaped kitchen nook cushion, tested against spills, sun and daily breakfasts

*An L-shaped nook between the ovens and the window gets used three times a day. Here is how a cotton stripe holds up, and what I would spec for toddlers, dogs and a big window.*

> **The quick answer:** A striped cotton L-shaped nook cushion suits daily kitchen use when it is built as two separate seat cushions with zippered covers that wash at 86°F (30°C). Cotton stripes stain more easily than performance fabric and can fade in strong sun, so for toddlers, pets or a bright window, pick a performance weave or order a spare cover with the first.

## Pinned on the photograph

Five pins, read from the ceiling down: two backs, the table, the chairs and the pendant.

1. **Oven-wall back pad**: The long back pad runs right up to the tall oven unit, using every centimeter of the corner.
2. **Window-side back**: The back stops below the sill so the window stays clear.
3. **Tulip table**: A pedestal base lets knees fit under from every seat around the L.
4. **Navy chairs**: Navy is the complementary contrast that makes the yellow read brighter.
5. **Disc pendant**: A single white pendant centered over the table anchors the nook.

## Reading the nook from above

Overhead shots are honest, partner. You cannot hide a bad corner from the ceiling.

This nook is an L: one long back pad on the oven wall, one on the window side, seats below, and a butter yellow and white stripe running through all of it. The oven-wall back runs right up to the tall oven unit, so no inch of that corner is wasted. The window-side back stops below the sill, so the glass stays clear.

The table is a white tulip pedestal. One center base means knees fit under from every seat around the L, which four legs in a corner make hard. Two navy chairs close the loop. Navy is the complement of yellow, which is why the stripe reads brighter than it would alone. A white disc pendant marks the center; the only other accents are a fruit bowl, an olive stem in a jug and ladles on a rail.

Stripes on an L are geometry, too. The roll is about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so on long cushions the stripe runs front to back by default, matched on one face only. At the inside corner the two runs meet at 90°. Plan for it; do not fight it. The [corner joint guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-cushion-corner-joint/) shows which piece owns the corner, and [L-shaped cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/l-shaped-cushions/) and [kitchen nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kitchen-nook-cushions/) show more layouts. Which run of your nook gets the afternoon sun?

## The daily life test, line by line

| Test | Cotton stripe, as shown | Spec it this way |
|---|---|---|
| Spills | Cotton stains more easily than performance fabric | Zippered covers; wash at 86°F (30°C), inside out, mild detergent, no bleach, air dry |
| Sun through a big window | Indoor fabric has limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, long sun | Outdoor fabric carries UV and fade-resistant finishes and also works indoors |
| Many small hands | Works with regular washing | Soft fabric or velvet: durable, wipeable, machine washable |
| Dogs and cats | Woven cotton; no fabric stops every claw | The pet chart: tightly woven, no loops, a fabric quoted at about 88,000 Martindale |
| Washing an L | One bent piece is awkward to unzip | Two separate seat cushions that each unzip |
| Reordering later | Dye batches can differ slightly | Order a spare cover with the first set |

## The fire-pit L that became two cushions

A buyer in the US sent photos and a diagram of an L-shaped concrete bench around a fire pit, seat 18 in (46 cm) deep, and wanted a striped outdoor fabric from the listing photos. The quote covered seats and backs; the buyer ordered the seats only, with the piping matched to the gray in the stripe.

The craftsmen made the L as two separate seat cushions, not one bent piece, so the covers come off easily and stay snug. The buyer called the result perfect. Outdoors or in a kitchen, the logic holds: an L in two pieces is two covers that fit in a washing machine. Tolerance is kindness to your future self, and so is a spare cover from the same dye batch.

## Odd shapes, brighter piping and stripe colors

**A common question:** Can you make an irregular-shaped bench cushion? And how thick is the French-style tufted one?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Irregular shapes are made from a drawing with every size marked. The French-style tufted bench cushion is normally 4 in thick and can be made 6 in.

**A common question:** Do you have brighter piping colors than the ones on this listing?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The linen bench cushion listing carries the widest set of fabric charts, and fabrics from different charts can be combined on one cushion. Pick the piping from any chart, order from whichever listing you like, and write both codes in the personalization box.

**A common question:** Could you make one of your plain colors in the broad-stripe pattern?

**The workshop's answer:** No. They belong to different fabric charts, and the fabrics come directly from the mills, so the workshop cannot create a new pattern or colorway. Choose from the striped options that exist.

| Stripe direction | Front to back by default; roll about 55 in (140 cm) wide |
| Back pads | Oven-wall back to the tall unit; window-side back below the sill |
| Thickness | 2, 3, 4 or 5 in (5 to 12.5 cm); 4 in (10 cm) standard |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will a cotton stripe survive breakfast every day?

With care, yes. The stripes are woven into the cotton, not printed on, but cotton stains more easily than performance fabric. Blot spills quickly and wash the zippered covers at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, then air dry.

### Where does the seam go on an L-shaped nook cushion?

At the corner. One cushion runs into the corner and the other is shortened by the seat depth, so the two meet without overlapping. A single L-shaped piece is possible but not recommended.

### Can a kitchen nook cushion be made in outdoor fabric?

Yes. The outdoor range is woven polyester with water-repellent and UV and fade-resistant finishes, and it also works indoors. It costs more than indoor fabric and is less soft than velvet.
