# Slate blue outdoor bench cushion at the pool: beads, splashes and a summer of sun

*The camera caught a splash in mid-air and drops sitting on the weave. A good start. The real test comes in August: wet swimsuits, a shaking dog, a spilled drink and a storm nobody forecast.*

> **The quick answer:** A slate blue water-repellent cushion ages well by a pool as long as you treat it as water-repellent, not waterproof. Drops bead on the weave and a darker slate hides wet patches, but a soaking storm still reaches the foam, so stand cushions on edge or bring them in after heavy rain.

## Swatch strip: five colors from the pool edge

- Slate blue — #5B6F84 — The cushion. Dark enough to hide a wet patch before it dries.
- Pool turquoise — #3DB4C2 — The splash behind. Bright, cool, and never on the seat itself.
- Honey teak — #B5824B — The bench. Warm contrast under a cool top.
- Terracotta — #BF6440 — The agave's pot. The one warm clay note.
- Coping stone — #CFC7BA — The pool edge everything sits on.

## The August test: what beads, what soaks, what fades

Water beading on a cushion looks like a finished argument. It isn't.

The drops here sit on top of the slate weave instead of soaking in, which is the point of a [water-repellent outdoor fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/). That handles splashes, a wet towel, a dog shaking off beside the bench. A long storm is different: water finds seams and zippers, and foam dries from the inside out. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract.

Color is the quiet ally. Slate hides a damp patch that ivory would show all afternoon, and the self piping keeps the edge firm when splashed. For sun, the outdoor fabrics carry UV-resistant finishes.

After a storm, stand the cushions on edge or bring them in so the foam can dry; the [winter storage guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/) covers the rest. How many hours of direct sun does your pool deck get, friend? Count them before choosing a color in the [outdoor cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/).

## Pinned on the photograph

Five pins: the drops, the edge, the splash, the pot and the teak.

1. **Beading water droplets**: Drops sit on top of the weave instead of soaking in, which is the point of a water-repellent fabric.
2. **Self-piped cushion edge**: Self piping keeps the edge firm and neat even when it gets splashed.
3. **Pool splash behind**: The splash shows the kind of wet poolside life this cushion is meant for.
4. **Agave in terracotta**: A potted agave is a low-water, sculptural plant that suits a pool deck.
5. **Teak bench frame**: Honey teak gives warm contrast beneath a cool slate cushion.

## New covers over old foam, 64.75 inches of it

A buyer in the US had good foam on an outdoor sofa and wanted new covers: a boxed, zippered seat cover of 64.75 x 31 x 4 in (164.5 x 79 x 10 cm) and three back covers in off-white, ivory or oatmeal, from a big-name acrylic brand. The workshop said plainly it doesn't carry that brand. Its outdoor fabrics are polyester with water-repellent, UV-resistant finishes, sewn with double-stitched seams, hidden zippers and self piping to reinforce the edges. Ties, yes; hook-and-loop tape, no.

Before quoting, it asked for sofa photos and the back cushion sizes. Ask what a cloth is and how it is finished; a brand name tells you neither.

## Weather questions

**A common question:** Would your regular linen cushions hold up on a covered balcony?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, they will be fine on a covered balcony; regular linen and velvet suit covered outdoor spots. For a pallet daybed on a patio, the workshop first checked the area was under a roof.

**A common question:** The product photo and the swatch picture show different tones, terracotta against pink, orange against red. Which is right?

**The workshop's answer:** Both. One was shot in daylight, the other under white indoor light, which shifts the tone; that terracotta is not pink, and outdoor fabric HM-08 is an orange, not a red. When in doubt, ask for a close-up photo.

**A common question:** How thick are your outdoor cushions, and could I have 6 in (15 cm)?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard outdoor thickness is 4 in (10 cm), and quotes assume it unless you say otherwise. Thicker cushions, such as 6 in (15 cm) or 5 in (12.5 cm), can be made at an updated price.

> **Tailor's margin:** After a storm, stand a water-repellent cushion on its edge for the afternoon. Water that got past the seams drains out instead of sitting in the foam.

## On the cutting table: the pool bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Rectangular box cushion on a teak bench |
| Fabric | Water-repellent outdoor weave, slate blue (code HM-30) |
| Finish | Water-repellent and UV-resistant |
| Piping | Self piping to reinforce the edges |
| Seams | Double-stitched, with a hidden zipper |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm) outdoor standard; thicker on request |
| Fastening | Ties on request |
| Best for | Pool decks, open patios and swimmers who never towel off |

> Water beading on an outdoor cushion is the first line of defense, not the last: a storm that soaks the seams still reaches the foam.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do darker outdoor colors hide water marks better?

Yes. A mid-dark slate blue shows wet patches far less than cream or ivory, so a splashed poolside cushion looks tidy before it dries. Pale cushions show every damp footprint until the sun finishes the job.

### Can outdoor cushions stay out through a summer storm?

A water-repellent cushion sheds splashes and light rain, but a long storm works through seams and zippers into the foam. Bring cushions in or stand them on edge when a storm comes, and let the foam dry before sitting.

### Why pick self piping for a poolside cushion?

Self piping keeps the edge firm and neat even when it is splashed, and the workshop recommends it to reinforce outdoor covers. Cut from the same fabric, it adds strength without adding another color.
