# Water beading on a green geometric sunbed cushion at the pool's edge

*Callum answers two common outdoor questions, then reads a splash shot for what the cloth does when a swimmer lies down wet.*

> **The quick answer:** A good outdoor sunbed cushion lets water bead on the surface of the weave instead of soaking straight in, and keeps its box edge crisp when wet. If you lie down straight from the pool, ask for a water-repellent outdoor fabric with quick-drying foam inside, and stand the cushions on edge after heavy rain.

## Buyer questions: outdoor cloth and a whole bench set

**A common question:** Do you have fabrics that can live outdoors?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, many, on a separate outdoor fabric chart. An outdoor order can include the foam filling, an anti-slip underside and piping in any color from the range. Even floor sofa mattresses can be made in outdoor fabric.

**A common question:** Can you quote a whole set of custom seat and back cushions for a backyard bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a plan with every size and the full set is quoted from it, with foam-filled backrests if you want them. Multi-piece outdoor orders have been reduced for bulk; one concrete bench needed 12 seat and back pieces, each 3 in (8 cm) thick.

## What the beads are telling you

Friend, here is the question every pool owner asks, answered in one frame.

Someone climbs out wet and sits down. The photo catches the splash. Droplets sit on top of the green-and-white geometric weave in round beads instead of darkening the cloth. That bead is what outdoor acrylic is supposed to do: shed water at the surface long enough for it to roll off or be brushed away.

Now the honest part. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. A bead on the surface is repellency. Leave a puddle sitting in a seam all afternoon and some of it will find a way through. That is why the inside matters as much as the outside. Quick-drying foam lets whatever gets in drain and dry, instead of holding it like a sponge. People search for waterproof outdoor cushions; what most of them need is repellent cloth over dry-fast foam. The difference is laid out in [water-repellent versus waterproof cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/) and [dry-fast foam for outdoor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dry-fast-foam-outdoor-cushions/).

The hand of the cloth. Up close the weave looks tight and flat, the kind of surface a drop can sit on. It handles more like a light canvas than a sofa cotton, and it keeps that hand when wet. The piped box edge in the shot holds its line even soaked. The piping is self piping in the same print, so the edge melts into the pattern and nothing competes with the water.

The props keep the test honest. White aluminum lounger frame, white side table, bluestone paving, the pool itself, in sparkling sun. It is staged where the cushion will actually live, not in a studio.

Sage green, white and a line of lime. Pick a print from the [outdoor acrylic shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and a shape from the [chaise and sunbed cushions atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/chaise-and-sunbed-cushions/). How often do your loungers see a wet swimmer?

## Pinned by Callum

The pins mark the beading droplets, the splash itself, the piped box side and the white side table that keeps the test at the pool.

1. **Beading droplets**: Water sits on top of the weave instead of soaking straight in.
2. **Splash**: Staged to show what happens when someone climbs out of the pool wet.
3. **Piped box side**: The box edge stays crisp even when wet.
4. **White side table**: Keeps the demo anchored to a real poolside setting.

## A strap nobody needed

A buyer got in touch about a bench inside an RV, the kind whose lid lifts for storage. The cushion was 28.75 x 17 in (73 x 43 cm), and they asked for a strap to hold it on the lid.

The workshop suggested a non-slip fabric base instead. It grips the lid without straps, so the lid opens clean and nothing dangles. The workshop also suggested cream piping for a soft contrast with the fabric they had chosen. The buyer sent a drawing and took both suggestions.

On a lift-up lid, a non-slip base is tidier than straps. A lid that has to open should never have to argue with a strap. More road and water builds sit in the [boat and RV cushions atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/boat-and-rv-cushions/) and the [hinged storage bench pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/).

## What to ask for if you swim first

- ✓ A water-repellent fabric from the outdoor chart
- ✓ Quick-drying foam inside, not an indoor block
- ✓ An anti-slip underside if the cushion rides a smooth frame or a lid
- ✓ Piping in any color from the range, or self piping to let the print lead
- ✓ A habit: stand the cushions on edge after heavy rain

## On the cutting table: the poolside lounger

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Seat-and-backrest sunbed cushion, box edge |
| Fabric | Green, white and lime geometric outdoor acrylic |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Surface | Water beads on the weave |
| Filling | Quick-drying foam for swimmers |
| Underside | Anti-slip base available |
| Whole sets | Quoted from a plan with every size |
| After rain | Stand the cushions on edge to drain |
| Best for | Poolside loungers used straight from the water |

> **Tailor's margin:** After a heavy rain, stand outdoor cushions on edge. Water drains down through dry-fast foam instead of pooling in the middle.

> Water beading on an outdoor cushion is repellency, not waterproofing; put quick-drying foam inside so whatever gets through can drain.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does water sit in beads on top of an outdoor cushion?

The fabric is shedding water at the surface instead of absorbing it, which buys time for the water to roll off or be brushed away. It is repellency, so water left standing in the seams can still work its way through.

### What should go inside a lounger cushion that gets wet every day?

Quick-drying foam. It lets water that gets past the cover drain and dry out instead of holding it. Pair it with a water-repellent outdoor fabric and stand the cushions on edge after heavy rain.

### How do I stop a cushion sliding on a smooth frame or lid?

Ask for a non-slip fabric base. On an RV bench with a lift-up lid, a 28.75 x 17 in (73 x 43 cm) cushion used one instead of straps, which keeps the lid free to open with nothing dangling.

### Should poolside cushions have contrast piping?

That is a looks choice. Self piping lets a busy geometric print lead, while a contrast cord, such as cream, outlines the shape. Piping can come in any color from the outdoor range.
