# A hibiscus-print trapezoid bench cushion in a brick-view bay, put through a daily life test

*Nate takes apart a dark tropical trapezoid cushion edge by edge and asks how it will cope with kids, pets, spilled tea and a gray city light.*

> **The quick answer:** A dark, busy print is the most forgiving cover for a trapezoid bench cushion in a family bay window: red and orange hibiscus on navy hide drips and paw marks that a pale plain fabric would show. Order it from five true edge measurements, both slants included, and let the maker handle clearances around moldings.

## Edge by edge: how this trapezoid is built

A trapezoid is four numbers plus the fifth one people forget. This trapezoid bench cushion shows why all five matter.

The short back edge sits against the center window. The longest edge faces the room. Both ends are cut to the angle of the bay walls, so no bare bench top shows at the corners. The edge is boxed and finished in self piping, the print's own cloth, so the outline stays inside the pattern.

The print carries red and orange hibiscus with teal leaves on a navy ground. Outside, the view is gray brick. The window brings in no color at all, so the seat supplies it.

Each prop has a job. A dusty pink velvet pillow picks up the softest pink in the flowers. A cream linen pillow gives the eye a plain square. An oatmeal fringed throw breaks the long run of pattern mid-seat. The rattan side table holds the mint tea, so the glass never sits on the cushion. A monstera in terracotta and the white paneled base close the frame.

Run your numbers through the [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) and the [trapezoid measuring pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/trapezoid-cushion-measurements/); more shapes live under [trapezoid cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/trapezoid-cushions/) and [living room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/living-room-cushions/). Which edge of your bay takes the most traffic?

## The daily life test, one load case at a time

- ✓ **Spilled tea:** a navy ground with red and orange flowers hides a drip a cream seat would keep.
- ✓ **Kids climbing up:** the longest edge faces the room and takes every knee and sneaker. Inspect it first after a year.
- ✓ **Pets:** a busy print hides paw prints. The plain cream pillow shows them first, so treat it as the washable piece.
- ✓ **Sun:** this bay faces brick in soft gray light. A south-facing bay is a different load case; read the [window seat fading](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/) notes first.
- ✓ **Velvet pillows:** small hands grab the pink one first. The workshop describes its [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) as stain resistant and easy to clean.
- ✓ **Spot cleaning:** blot first, and keep the [stain first-aid steps](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-stain-removal-first-aid/) handy.

## Pinned by Nate: five points of wear

The pins run from the trapezoid body to the angled end, then to the pillow, the throw and the tea glass on its rattan table.

1. **Trapezoid cushion**: Short back edge against the center window, longest edge facing the room.
2. **Angled end**: The end is cut to the bay's wall angle, so no bench top shows at the corner.
3. **Dusty pink pillow**: Picks up the softest pink among the hibiscus flowers.
4. **Oatmeal throw**: Breaks the long run of pattern in the middle of the seat.
5. **Mint tea on rattan**: A side table keeps drinks off the printed seat.

## Why a 21-inch slant could not be right

A buyer in the US sent the workshop C 68 in (173 cm), D 40 in (102 cm), a depth of 17.25 in (44 cm) and one slant of 21 in (53 cm). Those four cannot all be true.

Half the difference between front and back is (68 − 40) ÷ 2 = 14 in. With a 17.25 in depth, the slant works out at √(14² + 17.25²), about 22 1/4 in (57 cm). Not 21.

The buyer had trimmed some numbers to dodge the wall moldings. The workshop asked for all five edges again, measured true. The corrected set: both slants 24 in (61 cm), C 72.5 in (184 cm), D 40 in, depth 17.5 in (44 cm). Check: (72.5 − 40) ÷ 2 = 16.25 in, and √(16.25² + 17.5²) ≈ 23.9 in. Call it 24. Into production it went.

Angles are just lengths in disguise. Give us the true lengths; clearances are our job.

## On the cutting table: the hibiscus trapezoid

| | |
|---|---|
| Shape | Trapezoid, short edge at the back |
| Ends | Angled to match the bay walls |
| Edge | Box edge with self piping |
| Print | Red, orange and teal hibiscus on navy |
| Orientation | Longest edge faces the room |
| Measure | All five edges: front, back, both slants and depth |
| Odd angles | A paper tracing with the corner angles beats three numbers |
| Pair with | A side table for drinks and one plain pillow |
| Best for | Family bay windows used every day |

## Buyer questions: quotes, velvet and exact sizes

**A common question:** How do I find out what a custom trapezoid window seat cushion will cost?

**The workshop's answer:** Enter your size range on the trapezoid listing and the price appears there. Quotes have gone out for seats like 70 in (178 cm) at the front, 44 in (112 cm) at the back and 20.5 in (52 cm) deep, with 2.5 in (6 cm) notches, at 2 in (5 cm) thick, and for a pointed bay about 89 in (227 cm) long and 13 in (33 cm) deep.

**A common question:** Will velvet stand up to stains on a window seat the kids use?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop describes its velvet as stain resistant and very easy to clean.

**A common question:** Can you make a window seat cushion to my exact numbers, say 68 x 39.5 in?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The shop makes any custom size; recent examples include 68 x 39.5 in (173 x 100 cm), 32 x 81 in (81 x 206 cm) and 24 x 76 in (61 x 193 cm). It will also ask whether you want a matching backrest.

> A trapezoid cushion needs five measurements, not three: front, back, depth and both slants. When the slants disagree with the math, one number is wrong.

> **Tailor's margin:** Trapezoid cushion check: a 72.5 in front, 40 in back and 17.5 in depth must give a 24 in slant, or a number is wrong.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which way round does a trapezoid cushion sit in a bay?

Short edge against the center window, longest edge facing the room, with the ends cut to the angle of the side walls. Set that way, no bare bench top shows at the corners and the full depth of the seat is usable.

### Is a dark print better than a solid for a window seat used by kids?

For hiding daily life, yes. Red and orange flowers on a navy ground swallow drips and smudges that a pale solid keeps on show. The trade-off is that a busy seat needs calmer pillows, like the cream linen and dusty pink here.

### Why lay a throw across the middle of a patterned window seat?

A long trapezoid in an all-over print can read as one sheet of pattern. The oatmeal fringed throw breaks the run near the center, gives the eye a rest, and is the easiest layer to wash after a spill.

### Should I send a paper template instead of numbers for an angled bay?

If the angles are unusual, send both. Trace the seat on paper including the corner angles and include the five edge measurements. A tracing catches walls that lean and moldings that stick out, which numbers alone can hide.
