# A sage striped garden bench cushion set, and what indoor benches can borrow from it

*Callum reads a teak two-seater from straight overhead, like a plan on a chart table, and trades rules between the patio and the house.*

> **The quick answer:** A two-seater garden bench works best with one full-width seat cushion and two back cushions split at the center, stripes lined up across the join. Indoor benches can borrow that split, plus water-repellent fabric by the back door; outdoor benches can borrow indoor habits like a flat top without tufts and a handle where you lift.

## Pinned by Callum from above the bench

Five pins on the plan view: two back cushions, the full-width seat, the piped front edge and one terracotta pot.

1. **Left back cushion**: Two back cushions split at the center are easier to handle than one long one.
2. **Right back cushion**: Vertical stripes on the backs line up with the stripes on the seat below.
3. **Full-width seat**: One seat cushion spans the bench from arm to arm.
4. **Front piped edge**: The self-piped front edge sits exactly on the front rail of the bench.
5. **Terracotta pot**: A single terracotta pot adds warmth to the gray paving.

## The bench as a plan: one seat, two backs, one stripe

From straight overhead, a bench stops being furniture and becomes a drawing. This one is teak, a two-seater on gray sandstone flags, with a gravel strip and a lawn edge beyond.

One seat cushion runs arm to arm. Two back cushions split at the center. The stripes run front to back on the seat and top to bottom on the backs, so they meet at the join and read as one line. Every piece has a self-piped box edge, and the piped front edge sits exactly on the bench's front rail. No droop, no overhang.

The light is flat and overcast. That's honest light for judging a sage and white stripe. The only warm note is a terracotta pot of geraniums and thyme at the side; everything else stays gray and green, so the stripe does the talking. [Stripe direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) covers lining them up.

The gallery around this plan runs the same thinking through other seats: salmon striped tie-on pads on black iron balcony chairs, powder blue stripes on white Adirondack chairs, a taupe stripe on a camper deck, a tile print on a teak bench by a hot tub. Stripes forgive weather better than you'd think, as long as they line up.

Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Know which one you're buying: [water-repellent vs waterproof cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/) and the [water-repellent membrane](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/) fabrics explain the difference. More sets live in [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/). Which bench at your place takes the most weather, the one on the patio or the one by the back door?

## Patio rules for the house, house rules for the patio

| Rule | Borrowed from | Why it travels |
|---|---|---|
| Split a long back into two | Outdoors | Two back cushions are easier to handle and wash than one long one, on a patio or at a kitchen table. |
| Water-repellent fabric by doors | Outdoors | A bench by the back door meets wet coats and spills; a repellent fabric buys you time to wipe up. |
| Flat top, no tufts | Indoors | Flat, button-free cushions are made on request, and a plain top lets a crisp stripe run unbroken. |
| One handle, placed where you lift | Indoors | Put it on the side you grab when you carry the cushion in ahead of weather. |
| Piping only if you want it | Both | Self piping gives a crisp line; plain edges are a note in the order away. |

## Two benches, one straight and one stepped

A buyer got in touch needing two bench cushions, both 2 in (5 cm) thick. The first was straightforward: 86 5/8 x 18 1/2 in (2200 x 470 mm). The second was stepped. One side ran 75 3/8 in (1915 mm). The other side broke into two runs: 54 1/8 in (1375 mm) at 16 3/8 in (415 mm) wide, then 21 1/4 in (540 mm) at 14 1/2 in (367 mm) wide.

The workshop asked for a drawing with every size on it, reviewed the image and quoted from that. Notice that the two short runs add up to the long side. Check that before you send anything, friend. A drawing that doesn't close only comes back to you with questions. The [custom shape drawing](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-shape-cushion-drawing/) Pattern shows how to lay one out.

## Buyer questions: flat tops, handles and plain edges

**A common question:** Could you make the cushion completely flat, with no buttons or tufting?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Flat, button-free cushions are made on request for anyone who prefers a plain look.

**A common question:** Does the cushion come with a handle, and can I choose which side it goes on?

**The workshop's answer:** Each cushion comes with one handle, placed wherever you ask; one buyer wanted it on the shorter 45 1/4 in (115 cm) side. More handles can be added on request.

**A common question:** Can you make it without piping around the edges?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Write in the order notes that you don't want piping, and the cushion is sewn with plain edges.

## On the cutting table: the teak two-seater

| Fabric | Sage and white stripe in a water-repellent membrane fabric |
| Stripe direction | Front to back on the seat, top to bottom on the backs |
| Piping | Self piping on every box edge |
| Front edge | Sits exactly on the front rail, no overhang |
| Bench | Teak two-seater on sandstone paving |
| Borrow indoors | The split back, and water-repellent fabric by doors |
| Borrow outdoors | A flat top, a handle where you lift, piping only if you want it |
| Best for | Patio benches, garden seats and hard-working benches by back doors |

> **Tailor's margin:** On a stepped bench cushion, the short runs must add up to the long side: 54 1/8 + 21 1/4 in = 75 3/8 in.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why split a bench back into two cushions instead of one?

On a two-seater, two back cushions split at the center are easier to handle and wash than one long one, and each can be carried in on its own when the weather turns. Line the stripes up and the split barely shows.

### Which way should stripes run on bench seat and back cushions?

On this bench the stripes run front to back on the seat and top to bottom on the backs, so they meet at the join and read as one continuous line, even from above.

### Can an outdoor striped bench cushion be used indoors?

Yes. A water-repellent fabric makes sense on a bench by a back door or in a mudroom, where wet coats and spills are routine. Remember that water-repellent sheds splashes; it is not the same as waterproof.

### Should an outdoor bench cushion overhang the front rail?

No. On this bench the self-piped front edge sits exactly on the front rail, so the line looks tailored and nothing hangs down to catch on legs or collect grime.
