# A rust corduroy play arch, sized to a toddler who squats

*Proportion for small bodies is measured low. Here it is measured by two hands on a cream dome.*

> **The quick answer:** Size a kids' floor sofa or play arch to the child squatting, not standing: a toddler at squat height should be eye level with the middle piece and able to slide the smallest one out with two hands. This rust, espresso and cream corduroy set nests three pieces, and a flat jute rug lets children rearrange it themselves.

![Curly-haired toddler squatting to slide a cream corduroy dome out of rust and espresso nesting arches on a jute rug](https://cushionguide.com/media/kids-floor-sofas/toddler-squatting-cream-dome-rust-corduroy-arch-1365.webp "Small hands, big arch: the cream dome is the piece children reach for first.")

## Level with the middle arch

The child squats. Two hands land on the cream dome. The eyes are level with the espresso arch.

That is the measurement. A toddler folds in half to reach things, so a play piece is sized to a folded body, not a standing one. This [kids floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-floor-sofas/) set gets it right. The middle arch sits at squat height, and the dome is small enough to grip with both hands and slide.

The square crop puts those hands at the center, where cream meets espresso. Rust outside, deep brown in the middle, cream at the core. Three colors far enough apart that a small child can see where each piece goes back.

Light comes from the window behind. It outlines the curls and the rust ribs of the [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) at the same moment. The ribs curve over the top of the arch with no bunching, and no piping interrupts them.

The jute rug is flat. Pieces slide on it when children rearrange them. A deep pile would hold them in place, which sounds useful until a two-year-old tries to drag one.

The linen curtain and oak floor stay quiet. Nothing else in the frame asks to be touched.

How tall is the child you are buying for, when squatting?

Children measure comfort with their whole body.
Here the body is folded in half.
The dome is one reach away.

## Pinned by Hana: hands, arches, rug

Five pins, placed at the height of a squatting child.

1. **Hands on cream dome**: The dome is sized for small hands to grip and slide.
2. **Rust arch top**: The rust ribs curve smoothly over the top with no bunching.
3. **Espresso middle arch**: A deep brown in the middle makes the cream core stand out.
4. **Squatting toddler**: At squat height the child is level with the middle arch.
5. **Jute rug**: A flat rug lets the pieces slide easily when children rearrange them.

## Sizing a play couch to a small body

1. Measure the child squatting, not standing. That is the height where hands and eyes work.
2. Keep the smallest piece small enough to grip with two hands and slide.
3. Give each nesting piece its own color, so putting the set away becomes a matching game.
4. Set the pieces on a flat rug, so they slide when children move them.
5. Between two sizes, picture the child in two years, not this afternoon.

## A corner cushion that felt too big, and was not

A family wrote to the workshop about a corner cushion for the reading corner in their daughter's bedroom. The standard size was 39.5 x 39.5 in (100 x 100 cm). It seemed too big for her. The workshop offered 31.5 x 31.5 in (80 x 80 cm).

They thought it over and kept the larger size.

They also wanted a spare cover in blue. It had dropped off the order form, so the workshop added it back. The pink cushion arrived, and their daughter loved it. The blue cover had been left out of the box. The workshop made it and sent it on its own.

Two lessons. A child grows into a floor cushion, rarely out of it. And when a spare cover in a second color is on the order, count every piece when the box opens. The Pattern on [kids' floor sofa sizes by age](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kids-floor-sofa-size-by-age/) has the numbers, and the [play build sketches](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/kids-floor-sofa-play-builds/) show how the pieces rearrange.

## Buyer questions: support bars, firmness and what the corduroy is

**A common question:** How many metal support bars does a modular floor couch need?

**The workshop's answer:** A 3-seater needs five bar pieces, covering both sides and the back. The bars are made only for the workshop's own sofa system.

**A common question:** Are the floor sofa cushions soft, or are they very firm foam?

**The workshop's answer:** The seat and ottoman cushions are high-density, medium-hard foam. They are not too hard, and they are comfortable both to sit on and to sleep on.

**A common question:** What is the corduroy on the floor sofa made of, and what certification does the fabric have?

**The workshop's answer:** It is a velvet corduroy, one of the workshop's fabrics from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239). Claws do not catch on it easily, and the covers come off and can be machine-washed.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a toddler squatting, not standing, before sizing a play couch. Squat height is where small hands actually work.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why do play arch sets use three different colors?

Distinct colors, like rust, espresso and cream here, let a small child see which piece nests inside which. Putting the set away becomes a matching game, and the contrast makes the smallest piece easy to find on the rug.

### What rug works under a kids' play couch?

A flat, low rug such as jute lets pieces slide when children move them around. A deep pile rug grips the foam and makes each piece harder for a toddler to drag into a new shape.

### Should I size a kids' floor cushion up or down?

Lean toward the size the child will grow into. One family worried a 39.5 x 39.5 in (100 x 100 cm) corner cushion was too big, considered 31.5 in (80 cm), and kept the larger one for their daughter's reading corner.

### Is corduroy a good fabric for a play couch?

Corduroy's ribs give small hands something to grip, and its soft pile suits a piece children lean and lie on. Choose removable, washable covers, and consider a spare cover in a second color for wash days.
