# A tiger-stripe banquette cushion, seen from the sofa and from six inches away

*Maggie reads three letters first, then judges a deep printed cushion on a farmhouse built-in the way guests do: across the room, then up close.*

> **The quick answer:** A patterned banquette cushion should pass two tests: from across the room its colors must read as one warm block, and up close its edge and depth must look tailored. On a built-in people lean back on, choose a deeper cushion, self piping on a busy print, and solid pillows in three textures that repeat the print's warmest tones.

## Buyer questions: foam wraps, angled ends and a back to match

**A common question:** Could you wrap the foam in feather, about 20 percent, for my window seat?

**The workshop's answer:** Feather-wrapped foam isn't offered, but the foam can be wrapped in Dacron for extra comfort. One trapezoid seat with sides of 96 in and 55 1/2 in (244 and 141 cm), 19 1/4 in (49 cm) deep and 4 in (10 cm) thick, was quoted with a Dacron wrap.

**A common question:** Can you make a cushion with one angled end, for a seat under the stairs or a bay that looks like a trapezoid?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the size and a paper drawing that shows the angle, and the workshop copies the exact shape. It also checks whether a bay that looks like a trapezoid in a photo is really a rectangle seen at an angle.

**A common question:** Can you make a backrest to match my bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For one bench 74 in (1.88 m) long, the workshop made a seat 23 5/8 x 74 x 4 in (0.6 x 1.88 x 0.1 m) and a backrest 15 3/4 x 74 x 4 in (0.4 x 1.88 x 0.1 m), finished with a contrasting burgundy piping line.

## The view from the sofa, then the view from the seat

Every banquette gets judged twice: once from the far side of the room, and once by whoever sits on it. This one passes both.

From across the room you don't see tigers. You see a warm block of caramel, black and cream on a white shiplap built-in, with three solid pillows lined up along the back. The print reads as texture, the white paneling gives it a clean frame, and a double rattan pendant repeats the honey tones of the print from the ceiling. Sheer linen curtains, a black lantern on the mantel and a dark vintage-style rug keep the fireside corner cozy rather than loud, and a shelf of trailing plants does the rest.

Walk closer and the tailoring shows. This [banquette cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/banquette-cushions/) is noticeably deeper than a bench-top pad, which suits a built-in where people sit back against the shiplap and stay a while; with a TV on the wall, this is a seat for a whole movie, not a quick breakfast. The piping is cut from the print itself, so no stray line of color fights the stripes. I once piped a leopard print in black, dear, and spent a week apologizing to it. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, but on a busy print the honest welt is the quiet one.

Then the pillows. A rust velvet ruffle, a mustard chunky knit and a cream bouclé: three textures, and not one second pattern among them. Rust, mustard and cream pick out the warmest tones in the stripes, so the set looks planned from ten feet and feels generous from six inches. What does your banquette look like from the doorway?

## Pinned by Maggie: print, pillows and pendant

Five pins, from the deep tiger cushion out to the three pillows and up to the rattan pendant.

1. **Deep tiger cushion**: A deeper cushion suits a built-in where people lean back against the shiplap for a while.
2. **Rust velvet ruffle**: Velvet brings out the rust tones in the stripes.
3. **Mustard knit pillow**: Chunky knit adds a second texture without adding pattern.
4. **Cream boucle pillow**: The lightest pillow sits in front and repeats the pale fur markings.
5. **Rattan pendant**: Woven rattan echoes the honey tones of the print from above.

## A ten-foot checklist for a printed banquette

1. From the doorway, the print's colors read as one warm block, not a busy picture.
2. The frame around it stays plain: white shiplap, paneling or a solid wall.
3. Solid pillows pick out two or three of the print's warmest colors.
4. Up close, the piping disappears into the print instead of outlining it.
5. The cushion is deep enough for people who lean back, not just perch.

## Ten cushions, one bold pattern, and a sale we didn't make

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a dining booth in a bright, modern coastal-style home. They needed ten cushions, each 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, including two at 64 x 16 1/2 in (163 x 42 cm) and four at 32 x 21 in (81 x 53 cm), and they asked for a specific branded outdoor taupe.

The workshop explained that it works from its own fabric charts, pointed to the taupes and creams in the velvet and soft charts, and sent the patterned charts too. The quote came down for the bulk order. In the end the buyer wanted a bolder pattern than we had and found a local option, which is a perfectly sensible ending.

What I took from it: on a statement booth, the pattern decides the order, not the foam. Bring reference pictures of the look you want to the very first message. [Banquette cushion thickness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/banquette-cushion-thickness-table-height/) settles the rest.

> **Tailor's margin:** Style a busy print with solid pillows in three textures, velvet, knit and bouclé, picked from the print's warmest colors.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How deep should a banquette cushion be on a built-in people lean back on?

Thicker than a perching pad. When a built-in doubles as a sofa, people sit back against the wall and stay, so a deeper cushion carries them better. If a table stands in front, check the seat height against it before choosing the thickness.

### Should pillows on a patterned banquette be patterned too?

Usually not. Solid pillows in different textures, such as velvet, chunky knit and bouclé, layer well against a busy print. Pick their colors from the print's warmest tones so the set reads as planned from across the room.

### Why does a busy print look calmer from across the room?

At a distance the eye blends a print's colors into one block, so a tiger stripe reads as warm caramel texture. That is why the plain frame around it, such as white shiplap, and the solid pillows matter more than the print's detail.
