# Three outdoor bench cushion stripes on bare concrete, and a narrow seat made generous

*Callum writes about a studio photo with no scenery at all, and why that plain gray floor is the best place to choose a stripe for a tight spot.*

> **The quick answer:** To make a narrow outdoor bench feel generous, run the stripes along its length, fit the cushion flush with no overhang, and choose the colorway on a neutral gray surface in daylight rather than against the backyard. If money is tight, order the seats first and the backrests later. Standard indoor fabrics are not waterproof, so ask for the outdoor range.

## A letter about a photo with no view

No backyard, no sunset, no lemonade. Just three striped outdoor bench cushions stacked on polished concrete against a pale gray wall, and it may be the most useful outdoor photo in the batch.

Here's why. Evening light flatters. Golden hour turns every coral warmer and every teal richer, and people order from that picture. This studio has flat, even light, and the gray floor works like a photographer's gray card. The coral on top reads true. The aqua and teal in the middle sits between warm and green. The olive and mustard at the bottom is the earthiest of the three and the easiest to live with among plants.

Look at the make while you're down there. The stripes line up across the front, the boxing is square, and the self piping runs straight along the edge. That's the honest view, the one to study before you order.

Do the same at home, friend. Lay your samples on a neutral floor by a window at midday and choose there. Our Pattern on [fabric swatches](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) covers how to get them.

## Pinned by Callum

Five pins down the stack, from the coral stripe on top to the concrete floor doing the work of a gray card.

1. **Coral colorway**: Without garden light, the coral reads true, which is the color you will actually get.
2. **Piping seam**: A straight, even welt along the front edge shows tidy construction.
3. **Aqua and teal**: The middle colorway sits between warm and green, useful for comparison.
4. **Green and mustard**: The earthiest option of the three, easiest to live with in a garden.
5. **Concrete floor**: A neutral gray floor acts like a gray card for judging color.

## Making a narrow bench feel generous

The gallery around this reading is all tight corners: a slatted storage bench on a narrow city balcony, an L-shaped bench beside a raised herb bed, a plaster bench built into a loggia, a pallet sofa on gravel.

Three rules carry over from the stack to any of them. Run the stripes along the length, so the eye follows the line and the bench reads longer. Fit the cushion flush with the frame, because on a narrow balcony anything that hangs over catches knees on the way past. And pick a colorway with one tone from the floor and one from the planting, so the cushion belongs to the space instead of shouting over it.

Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Before you buy for a balcony, read [water-repellent vs waterproof cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/), then look through [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and our [outdoor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/). What's the narrowest seat you're trying to make comfortable?

## Five cushions, two quotes, one patient plan

One buyer wrote in about an outdoor corner set: two sofa seats of 37 x 22 in (94 x 56 cm), a corner seat of 43 1/4 x 22 in (110 x 56 cm), a bench of 31 1/2 x 15 3/4 in (80 x 40 cm) and a stool of 15 3/4 x 15 3/4 in (40 x 40 cm). They wanted covers that stand up to water and stains.

The workshop quoted it two ways: seats only, and seats with backrests, each with its own figure. That let the buyer decide on backs by budget instead of guessing.

On a small patio I'd take that split as a plan. Cushion the seats this season and add the backs when the budget allows. If months pass in between, ask about the [dye lot](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dye-lots-matching-cushions-later/) so the colors sit together.

## Buyer questions: weather, dollars and what to measure

**A common question:** Are these cushions indoor only? Is the fabric waterproof?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard fabrics are made for indoor use and are not waterproof. For outdoor seats there is a separate outdoor fabric range, and the shop will make a custom order in any of its colors.

**A common question:** Is the price on the listing in US dollars?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Prices are set in US dollars, and if you pay in another currency, checkout converts the amount for you.

**A common question:** Do I send the size of the bench or the size of my old cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** If you like how your current cushions fit, send their dimensions. If they never fit well, or you want a different thickness, measure the bench itself and send that instead.

## The stack on the concrete

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushions | Three box cushions, stacked for comparison |
| Colorways | Coral; aqua and teal; olive and mustard, each on white |
| Fabric | Striped outdoor fabric |
| Piping | Self piping, straight along the front edge |
| Edge | Firm, square boxing |
| Light | Flat studio light over a gray floor, a fair test of color |
| Small-space fit | Stripes along the length, flush with the frame |
| Best for | Balcony benches, loggias and small patios |

> **Tailor's margin:** On a narrow balcony bench, fit the cushion flush with the frame; any overhang is exactly where knees catch on the way past.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What makes a small outdoor bench look bigger?

Stripes running along the length, a cushion cut flush to the frame, and a colorway that repeats the floor or the planting. Each one keeps the eye moving along the seat instead of stopping at its edges.

### Why do outdoor cushion colors look different in photos?

Outdoor photos are often taken in warm evening light, which pushes coral, mustard and teal richer than they look at noon. A studio shot on a gray floor, or your own sample in flat daylight, shows the color you will actually get.

### Can I add backrest cushions to an outdoor set later?

Yes, you can phase it. One buyer had seats and backrests quoted separately and decided on backs by budget. If you add them months later, ask about the dye lot so the colors sit well together.
