# A terracotta custom bench cushion without piping, and the order note that gets it right the first time

*A long oak bench, a steel window, winter sun on lime plaster. The cushion is easy to love. Getting one like it without three rounds of messages takes a checklist, so here is mine.*

> **The quick answer:** To order a custom bench cushion right the first time, send the bench top's length and depth, the thickness, the fabric chart code, the piping choice and any extras in one message. Add a photo of the bench. For a slatted top, ask for a non-slip base. For a child's seat without a zipper, choose a fabric that cleans by hand.

## What the photograph says before I pick up a pencil

The first thing I check in any bench photograph is the ends, and this [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) passes. It stops flush at both ends of the oak, so frame and seat read as one piece of furniture. That only happens when somebody measured the bench top itself, on the wood.

The edge is a box with no piping. I am the piping woman, so take this as a real concession: on terracotta [bouclé](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/) against rough lime plaster, a welt would look fussy. Without one, the box edge rounds a little and the cushion looks lived-in on day one.

The color works because of the room. Low winter sun rakes across the plaster and the terracotta warms with it. The faded Persian rug repeats the rust at floor level, the oak grain carries it along the bench, and the blue cornflowers in the stoneware jug of dried wheat are the one cool note that keeps the corner from turning into a bowl of marmalade.

The props tell you how the bench is used. A steaming mug and two leather-bound books are stacked at the far end, where the seat meets the wall; an open book lies face down mid-chapter. This is an [entryway bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/) somebody actually sits on. One note for the order: the top is slatted, and people sit sideways and swing their legs over. Ask for a [non-slip base](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#non-slip-base), or the pad will creep toward the rug. What does your bench measure on the wood, dear?

## Pinned by Maggie

Five spots on the oak bench where the ordering choices show up in the finished cushion.

1. **Unpiped box edge**: Without piping the edge rounds slightly, giving a relaxed, lived-in look that suits lime plaster.
2. **Wheat and cornflowers**: The blue flowers are the one cool note that keeps the scene from going all orange.
3. **Mug and leather books**: Stacked at the far end, they mark where the seat meets the wall corner.
4. **Oak bench frame**: The cushion stops flush with both ends so frame and seat read as one piece.
5. **Faded Persian rug**: Its rust border picks up the terracotta cushion at floor level.

## The one-message order: my checklist

- ✓ Bench top length and depth, measured on the wood in inches, plus the thickness you want.
- ✓ The fabric chart code, not the color name. Terracotta means five shades to five people; a code means one.
- ✓ Piping: none, self or contrast, with the second code if it contrasts.
- ✓ Extras: non-slip base, ties, zipper. Say yes or no to each so nobody has to guess.
- ✓ Odd shapes: a drawing with every edge measured and a photo of the spot, uploaded at checkout.
- ✓ Anything on the listing or at checkout that looks wrong. Ask before you pay, not after.

## The toy box with no zipper

A parent wrote to the workshop about a cushion for the lid of a two-year-old's toy box, in a smoke color. The first size was 15 3/4 x 31 1/2 in (40 x 80 cm); a larger size was ordered in the end. Two things came up, and both were settled by a message before anything was cut.

First, the checkout showed a delivery charge that didn't match the free-delivery label on the listing. She asked, and the listing was corrected. Second, she worried that the cover had no zipper. On a toddler's seat that is a fair worry, and the answer was the fabric itself: it cleans easily by hand, so the cover never needs to come off.

The lesson worth keeping: for children's furniture, if the cover can't come off, the fabric has to be the easy-clean kind. If a screen looks odd, a two-line message beats a return.

## Buyer questions: codes, corners and matching backs

**A common question:** Is the orange linen in your photos the same shade as the burnt terracotta velvet, or is it brighter?

**The workshop's answer:** Very close. The orange in the photo is linen L-53, and it sits right beside Burnt Terracotta 112 in velvet. The small difference comes from how linen and velvet reflect light, not from L-53 being brighter, so choose the fabric type you prefer.

**A common question:** My corner bench needs a triangle cushion, 28 in on both sides at 90 degrees. Can you make that?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, corner and triangle cushions are regular work. Send a drawing with every edge measured, and a photo of the corner if you can, then order on the custom-shape listing and upload both images at checkout.

**A common question:** Should the back cushions match the seat cushions, or can they be different?

**The workshop's answer:** That's up to you. Each cushion is sold separately, so seat and back can match or differ. Many buyers choose a thicker, firmer seat and a slightly thinner or softer back.

> **Tailor's margin:** Quote the fabric chart code in your order message, never just the color name. One code means one shade to everyone at the cutting table.

> On a slatted bench top, order the cushion with a non-slip base. People sit sideways and swing their legs over, and a bare pad creeps.

| Fabric | Terracotta bouclé; order it by chart code |
| Piping | None; the box edge rounds slightly |
| Fit | Flush with both ends of the oak frame |
| Base | Non-slip bottom, asked for on a slatted top |
| Back cushions | Sold separately; can match the seat or differ |
| Odd shapes | Drawing with every edge measured, plus a photo |
| Best for | Entryway and mudroom benches |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why leave the piping off a bouclé bench cushion?

Bouclé's looped surface already gives the edge texture, so a welt can look fussy against rough plaster or plain oak. Without piping, the box edge rounds slightly and reads relaxed. Choose self or contrast piping if you want a crisp, tailored line instead.

### Does a cushion on a slatted bench need anything special?

Ask for a non-slip base. On a slatted top the cushion rests on ridges, and people sit sideways and swing their legs over, so a bare underside works its way toward the edge. A non-slip bottom is available on request.

### How do I check a corner drawing before sending it?

Make the numbers close. For a right-angle triangle with two 28 in (71 cm) sides, the long edge must come to about 39 5/8 in (100.6 cm). If your tape says otherwise, the corner isn't square, and the drawing should say so.
