# A terracotta trapezoid bench cushion with a dark welt, measured in a notebook

*One bay window, a clay-colored cushion, a chocolate welt and a gray sky. Here is my notebook page for it, with what I'd borrow from patio furniture and what I'd keep indoors.*

> **The quick answer:** A trapezoid bench cushion is measured as a list of lengths: front, back, depth and each angled side, plus any short corners. Order by the front as length and the depth as width, then send the drawing. Beside a table, go thinner, 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm), so seat height still works; with pets or toddlers, pick a washable cloth.

## Notebook page: one bay, one clay color, one dark line

Entry for the terracotta bay, partner. Overcast light, cedar fence, maple outside. Inside: a [trapezoid bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/trapezoid-cushions/) in a clay [linen-look fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), box edge, thin dark brown welt.

Why dark and not bright: the right end is angled, and a chocolate welt keeps that corner crisp against the white sill. A bright welt would shout the angle. A dark one just states it.

Terracotta is the only strong color, so everything near it stays neutral: two chunky cream knit pillows, an oatmeal linen throw, white oak cabinets with brass pulls, a jute rug. The olive velvet lumbar is terracotta's complement and makes the orange look deeper. Three stacked books give the mug a flat base on a soft top. Somebody thought about that.

## What this window seat borrowed from the patio, and what it kept

| Question | Patio habit | Indoor habit | This seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color | Mid-tones that hide dirt | Pale and delicate | Terracotta: strong and forgiving |
| Cleaning | Wipe it and move on | Careful, occasional | Washable linen-look cover |
| Thickness | Thin at dining height | Deep for lounging | Matched to the sill and any table |
| Texture | Flat, tight weaves | Knit, velvet, slub | Linen-look seat, knit and velvet pillows |
| Light | Built for full sun | Built for lamplight | A bay window gets both |

## Pinned by Nate: five points on a clay-colored bay

Five pins, from the olive lumbar that deepens the orange to the angled right end held crisp by a dark welt.

1. **Chunky knit pillows**: Cream knit keeps the neutrals textured so the clay color can lead.
2. **Olive velvet lumbar**: Olive sits opposite terracotta on the color wheel and makes the orange look richer.
3. **Books and mug**: Stacked books give the mug a flat base on the soft top.
4. **Angled right end**: The dark welt keeps the angled corner crisp against the white sill.
5. **White oak cabinets**: Pale oak and brass let the strong cushion color sit without clashing.

## 110 inches, a toddler, a dog and a housewarming

A buyer in the US needed one big angled-top bench cushion before a housewarming party early the next month. The numbers, as they went into my notebook:
- Front 110 in (279 cm)
- Back 55 in (140 cm)
- Depth 31.75 in (81 cm)
- Angled sides 38.5 in (98 cm)
- Corners 5 in (13 cm), plus one extra angled segment of 3.5 in (9 cm)

The workshop told them to use the front as the length and the depth for the size selection, then upload the drawing at checkout. With a small dog and a toddler in the house, it steered them from 100% cotton stripes toward the washable linen, soft or velvet ranges. The bench sat beside a table, so they chose a thinner 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) cushion to keep seat height right. Run yours through the [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) and check [thickness against table height](https://cushionguide.com/guides/banquette-cushion-thickness-table-height/).

## Buyer questions: gold piping, a wrong number, a bench bed

**A common question:** Why does the same piping look gold in one photo and yellow in another?

**The workshop's answer:** Light and camera change it. In the workshop's own two photos, identical piping looked gold in one and not in the other, so nobody can promise it will match a given photo in your room's light. That piping is closer to gold than yellow. If the exact tone matters, order swatches.

**A common question:** I measured my bench wrong after I ordered. Can you quote it again?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, as long as it's before production. The workshop re-quotes and updates the custom link. One 98.5 in (250 cm) order became a 68 x 22.5 in (173 x 57 cm) seat and a 68.5 x 20 in (174 x 51 cm) backrest, with the length kept no longer than the bench.

**A common question:** What comes in the tufted bench set with arm cushions, and which size works as a bed for someone 5 ft 9 in?

**The workshop's answer:** The set arrives fully filled: 1 base cushion, 1 back cushion and 2 end cushions. For sleeping, a person 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) tall should choose 30 x 73 in (76 x 185 cm).

> **Tailor's margin:** On a trapezoid cushion, measure the tiny segments too: a 3.5 in corner left off the drawing becomes a 3.5 in gap on the bench.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a trapezoid window seat have contrast piping?

It can, if the welt is darker than the cushion rather than brighter. A dark brown welt on terracotta keeps the angled corners crisp against a white sill; a bright contrast welt makes every angle the loudest thing in the room.

### How thick should a bench cushion be when it sits next to a dining table?

Thinner than most people expect: 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) was the choice for one large angled bench beside a table. A thick cushion lifts you too close to the tabletop. Measure from bench top to table underside before choosing.

### Why does terracotta pair so well with olive green?

They sit close to opposite each other on the color wheel, so each makes the other look richer. An olive velvet lumbar on a terracotta cushion deepens the orange, while cream and oatmeal neutrals around them keep the pair from feeling heavy.
