# Terracotta check chair pads tied to folding bistro chairs on an iron balcony

*Two small pads on a wrought-iron balcony, and every edge decision a folding chair forces on a tailor.*

> **The quick answer:** A chair cushion with ties for a folding bistro chair works best as a thin box-edge pad shaped to the seat, with corners traced from the seat itself and fabric ties knotted around the back legs, so the chair still folds flat. On a balcony, choose water-repellent fabric and bring the pads in before steady rain; the foam is not a quick-dry type.

## Two soft seats in a hard, black scene

Two black folding bistro chairs, a round marble table on a cast-iron base, a railing that curls like handwriting, a limestone facade across the street. Everything here is hard, cold or black. The two [chair pads](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) are the only soft surfaces.

The color comes from the pot, not the pattern book. A terracotta-and-ivory micro-check picks up the terracotta planter and its red geraniums, so chairs and table look set for the same morning. Espresso and croissants say what the pads are for: a slow breakfast.

Each pad is shaped to its seat and sits inside the frame; a [paper template](https://cushionguide.com/guides/paper-template-for-custom-cushion/) is how you get that shape. Ties in the same cloth are bowed around the back legs, which matters on a slippery slatted seat. The welt is self piping in the same check, so the edge stays quiet against the busy ironwork. A matched pair looks deliberate on a small balcony; order both together.

The cloth is from the [water-repellent](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/) range, sensible outdoors. Does your chair fold, stack or stay put?

## The balcony, pinned

Five pins, from the tied bow to the geraniums.

1. **Tie-on chair pad**: A shaped pad sits inside the seat frame so the chair can still fold.
2. **Fabric bow tie**: Ties in the same cloth hold the pad on a slippery slatted seat.
3. **Second chair pad**: Pads made as a matched pair keep a small balcony looking deliberate.
4. **Marble bistro table**: Espresso and croissants set the cafe scene at seat height.
5. **Geraniums in terracotta**: The pot and blooms are where the fabric color comes from.

## Box, knife, round or angled: the edge a bistro chair asks for

| Choice | What you see | On a folding bistro chair |
|---|---|---|
| Box edge | A side band (the gusset) gives straight walls and crisp corners | Holds its shape on a seat used daily; keep it thin |
| Knife edge | Two panels sewn at the rim, full in the middle, no side band | Soft outline, better for pillows than for a seat that must keep its line |
| Rounded corners | Corners traced from the seat itself | Follows a curved bistro seat, so nothing overhangs the frame |
| Angled sides | Front wider than back, a trapezoid | For tapered seats; send a drawing with every edge |
| Thickness | 2 in (5 cm) is the thinnest standard with piping | Thin enough to fold; 1 in (2.5 cm) only without piping |

## Five round stools for a new café

A buyer wrote to the workshop while opening a coffee shop. Five bar stools needed durable round seat pads, 16 in (41 cm) across and 3 1/2 to 4 in (9 to 10 cm) thick, like a photo they sent. The workshop quoted all five in the 4 in version, built for heavy café use.

Then came the question I'd have asked too, dear: could the 30 in (76 cm) steel or gunmetal stool frames come from the workshop as well? No. The workshop makes the cushion and the foam, not the metal.

For round seats the order is short: diameter, thickness, quantity and a reference photo.

## Curved seats, odd sizes and the zipper edge

**A common question:** My rocking chair has a curved wooden seat. How do I measure it for a cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Make a paper template. Trace the seat's edge, cut it out and write the widest width and the front-to-back depth on it. Photograph it flat from directly above with a tape measure in view; there's no need to mail it. The craftsmen may mark straight sections on your photo and ask for a couple of extra edge measurements.

**A common question:** My chair size isn't in the dropdown, and I need pads for eight chairs. How do I order?

**The workshop's answer:** Choose the size range by the seat's widest and deepest measurements, then write the exact size, thickness and fabric code in Add Personalization. Upload a drawing if the seat is trapezoid-shaped or unusual. Set the quantity to 8 for identical chairs, or place separate orders if sizes differ.

**A common question:** Is the zipper extra, and which edge does it go on?

**The workshop's answer:** Every cover has a zipper at no extra charge. It goes on the back edge, the one against the wall, window or chair back, so it stays out of sight. If the order doesn't make that clear, the workshop asks; on one 23 5/8 x 17 3/4 in (60 x 45 cm) cushion it went on the longer edge.

## The balcony pair

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Tie-on bistro chair pad, made as a pair |
| Fabric | Terracotta and ivory micro-check, water-repellent |
| Edge | Box edge, shaped to the seat |
| Piping | Self piping in the same check |
| Ties | Same fabric, bowed around the back legs |
| Thickness | From 2 in (5 cm), so the chair still folds |
| Zipper | On the back edge, at no extra charge |
| Weather | Water-repellent cloth, regular foam; bring in before rain |

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a rounded bistro seat with a paper template: trace it, write the widest width and the depth, then photograph it from above beside a tape measure.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why use a thin pad instead of a thick cushion on a folding chair?

A folding bistro chair has to close. A thin box-edge pad, from 2 in (5 cm) with piping, sits inside the frame and ties to the legs, so the chair still folds flat and stores away.

### Are balcony chair pads waterproof?

No. The outdoor fabrics are water-repellent and UV-resistant, not waterproof, and the foam is not a quick-dry type. Let a light shower bead off, and bring the pads indoors before steady rain.

### Can a chair pad have rounded front corners?

Yes. Trace the seat on paper and send a photo of the template with the widest width and depth written on it. The pad follows the traced curve, so no corner hangs past the frame.
