# A teal-piped garden bench cushion and the one message that gets it made right the first time

*Callum reads a tied, teal-welted box cushion on a silvered teak bench, then lays out the order like a chart: everything in one message, nothing left for the workshop to guess.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion comes out right the first time when one message carries everything: the width between the arms at seat level, the depth, the thickness, the fabric and piping codes, and where the ties go. For this teak garden bench that means ties at both back posts and one at the arm, a box edge and teal contrast piping.

![Multicolored pinstripe bench cushion with white branch pattern and teal piping tied to a weathered teak garden bench](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/teal-piped-branch-pattern-teak-garden-bench-cushion-1600.webp "A patterned box cushion with teal welting and ties catches low sun on a weathered teak garden bench.")

## Pinned by Callum: five spots on a silvered bench

Read the pins from the front welt to the ties: each one is a detail that had to be written into the order, not guessed from a size.

1. **Patterned bench cushion**: Fine stripes with white branch lines read calm from afar and lively up close.
2. **Teal front welt**: Teal piping draws the box edge sharply in low sun.
3. **Tie at back post**: Rear ties loop round the back posts so the cushion stays square.
4. **Tie at the arm**: A tie at the arm end stops the cushion shifting when someone sits at one end.
5. **Slatted teak back**: Silvered teak and backlight make the cushion the focus.

## Card one: what the photo tells the workshop

Evening light comes through the trees behind this bench and lands on the front edge. That's where your eye goes, and the cushion was made knowing it.

**Proportion.** A full-length box cushion, the whole run of the seat, no gap at either end. On a slatted bench that matters: leave a strip of bare wood and someone will always sit on it.

**The teal line.** The piping is contrast teal, one of the colors already in the stripe. In low sun it draws the box edge like a pencil line on a chart.

**Fabric against wood.** Fine pinstripes in slate, teal and red, crossed with white branch lines. From the lawn it reads calm, nearly solid. Sit down and it comes alive. Against silvered teak that restraint is right; weathered wood is busy enough.

**The props.** Striped ties loop around the back posts so the cushion stays square. One more tie at the arm stops it walking when somebody sits at one end. Hostas in pots, flagstones, a backlit lawn: all green and gray, so the cushion stays the focus. The [tie placement Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) maps where ties earn their keep.

Every one of those details had to be in the order. None of them can be guessed from a size alone. So, friend: what does your bench measure between the arms, at seat level?

## Card two: one message, everything in it

- ✓ Width between the arms at seat level, not across the outside of the frame
- ✓ Depth front to back, and the thickness you want
- ✓ Fabric code and piping code, copied exactly from the swatch card
- ✓ Where each back post meets the seat, measured from the same end, so the ties land on the posts
- ✓ Any tie at the arm end, and which end
- ✓ Firmness in plain words, or foam numbers if you have them
- ✓ A photo of the bench from the front and one from above

## Card three: a buyer who came with numbers

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a long indoor seat that adults use every day. They came with numbers: foam of at least 1.8 lb density and an ILD of 44, so nobody would sink through a deep seat.

Good message. The workshop answered in kind. Its foam works out to about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), and it's firm. It has no official ILD rating, and the workshop said so plainly instead of guessing one.

The cushion was 25 x 78 x 6 in (64 x 198 x 15 cm). The buyer chose fabric V-11 with matching V-11 trim and wrote both codes into the order.

Numbers asked, numbers answered, codes written down. That's a right-first-time order. The [foam density conversion table](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-lb-ft3-kg-m3/) translates the units, the [quote checklist](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-quote-what-to-send/) lists what to send, and the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) lets you try the size first. More benches live under [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/), and weatherproof cloth on the [outdoor acrylic shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/).

## On the cutting table: the garden bench seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Full-length box cushion for a slatted teak garden bench with arms |
| Fabric | Woven outdoor acrylic: slate, teal and red pinstripe with white branch lines |
| Piping | Contrast teal welt along the box edge |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Fastening | Striped fabric ties at both back posts, one more at the arm end |
| Measure | Width between the arms at seat level; each back post's distance from one end |
| Foam to ask for | Firm; about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) |
| Best for | A garden bench in dappled sun that gets sat on most evenings |

## Buyer questions: bolsters, performance fabric and a 138-inch seat

**A common question:** Could I get a velvet window seat cushion with matching bolsters, at least 4 inches thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Choose a color number from the velvet swatch card (one buyer's dusty rose was no. 11) and order the seat, backrest and bolsters together as a set. Standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm), every size can be customized, and in that conversation making took 5 to 7 days plus 3 to 5 days for delivery.

**A common question:** Do you offer performance fabric that holds up when accidents happen?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. All the fabric charts on the linen bench listing are performance fabrics made for durable daily use. The exception is the striped fabrics, which are 100% cotton and may not last as long.

**A common question:** My window seat is 138 inches long. Can the cushion be one continuous piece instead of two?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A 40 x 138 in (102 x 351 cm) cushion, 3 in (8 cm) thick, in linen L-06 with velvet 113 piping, was made as one continuous piece, and the workshop added that size to the listing so the buyer could check out.

> A garden bench cushion with arms needs two numbers people forget: the width between the arms at seat level, and where each back post meets the seat.
>
> — Callum

> **Tailor's margin:** Order by code, not by color name: write V-11 or L-06 exactly as the swatch card prints it, and add the piping code too.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What should I write in the personalization box for a custom bench cushion?

Write the fabric code and piping code exactly as printed, the finished size in inches, any ties with their positions, and anything unusual such as a notch or a drain. One complete note saves a round of back-and-forth messages before cutting.

### Where should ties go on a garden bench with arms?

At the back posts, where the slats meet the seat, so the cushion is pulled square, plus one at the arm end if people tend to sit at one end. Measure each post position from the same end of the bench.

### Is an outdoor acrylic cushion a good idea on a bench under trees?

Yes, with sense. Woven outdoor acrylic is made for sun and damp, unlike indoor cloth, but leaves, sap and long wet spells still take a toll. Bring the cushion in or cover it through storms and over winter.
