# A teal-green tweed cushion that turns a hallway radiator cover into a seat, read in morning and evening light

*A white hall, a silver mirror, a jute runner and one strong color on the lid of a radiator cover. Before you pick a teal from a screen, see what the hall light will do to it at 8 a.m. and at 8 p.m.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion on a radiator cover should be cut to the lid only, so the slatted front stays open and warm air still reaches the room. Choose its color in the hall itself: hold the swatch there in morning daylight and again under your evening bulbs, because a teal can lean blue by day and turn greener and darker at night.

## Buyer questions, before we look at the hall: piping, a wrong size and a slow rise

**A common question:** Is the piping on the top edge only, or on the bottom edge too?

**The workshop's answer:** Both. When a cushion is piped, the piping runs all the way around the top and bottom edges, and both faces are cut from the same fabric, so you can flip the cushion over.

**A common question:** I picked the wrong size at checkout. What happens now?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop reads your personalization note against the size you paid for. When a note asked for 16 x 75.5 in (41 x 192 cm) but the 16 x 32 in (41 x 81 cm) option was selected, it offered a link to pay the difference, or to make the standard size instead. In the end the buyer added one more 16 x 32 in unit to cover the full-length cushion.

**A common question:** My cushion arrived compressed. How long until it reaches full size?

**The workshop's answer:** About 3 to 4 days, sometimes sooner, sometimes a little longer. If it still measures short after that, send a photo with a tape measure along the full length. When a 16 x 94 in (41 x 239 cm) cushion stayed at about 91 3/4 in (233 cm) after 5 days, the workshop remade it and let the buyer keep the first one.

## Pinned by Maggie: mirror, edge, slats and runner

Four pins cover the whole hallway, from the mirror you check your coat in to the jute runner under your boots.

1. **Silver-framed mirror**: A mirror above the seat makes this the spot to pull on shoes and check your coat.
2. **Rounded box edge**: Without piping, the soft rounded edge suits the chunky teal yarn.
3. **Radiator slats**: The cushion covers only the lid, leaving the front slats open so heat can still get out.
4. **Jute runner**: Natural jute warms up a cool teal and white hallway.

## Why the one strong color in this hall is teal

Right, then. Stand at the front door and look down this hall. Everything is white, cream or silver except the seat, and that was the plan.

The cushion is a flecked teal-green weave with navy and white in the yarn, cut to the lid of a white slatted radiator cover and not an inch past it. It is a [box cushion](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#box-cushion) without piping; the softly rounded edge suits the chunky yarn, where a cord would fight the texture. The slatted front stays open so heat still reaches the hall, and the cushion lifts off in one hand when someone needs the valves.

The props all work for a living. The silver-framed mirror makes this the place to pull on shoes and check your coat. The jute runner warms a cool teal-and-white scheme and takes the grit off boots before it reaches the seat. The pale gray wood-look floor keeps the hall light, and even the white light switch belongs to the story: this is a room you pass through at every hour, under every kind of light.

Hallways are often the dimmest rooms in a house, lit by a door, a transom and a ceiling fixture. That is exactly why a strong color belongs here, and exactly why you must choose it here. I once picked a hall cushion on a laptop at midnight. It arrived a perfectly nice color, and not the one I had fallen for. Learn from me, dear, and read the Pattern on [screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) first.

More seats like this live under [entryway bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/), and textured wovens of this kind sit on the [jacquard and damask](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/) shelf of the Swatch Library.

What color is the light in your hallway at six in the evening?

## The two-light test for a hall color

- ✓ Hold the swatch on the radiator lid in morning daylight; open the front door if the hall has no window.
- ✓ Look again after dark under the bulbs you actually use. Warm bulbs can pull a teal greener and darker.
- ✓ Judge it beside the mirror frame and the runner, not beside a paint chip.
- ✓ Photograph the swatch in both lights and compare the two photos with each other, not with the product photo.
- ✓ Only then copy the fabric code into the order.

## Two cats and a kitchen bench over 11 feet long

A household in the US with two grown cats wrote to the workshop about a very long kitchen bench. They asked for a fabric the cats would be less tempted to scratch, and the workshop sent its pet-friendly chart.

The cushion came to 21 x 138 5/8 x 2 in (53 x 352 x 5 cm), more than 11 1/2 ft (3.5 m) long. The body was G42 with [double piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#double-piping) in G57, and the zipper ran along the long back edge so the cushion could be turned and flipped now and then. Special fabrics, and it still went through at the regular listing price.

The lesson carries straight to a hall seat that meets muddy boots and a wet dog: choose a tightly woven fabric, and put the zipper on the back edge so the cushion can rotate. The [pet-friendly cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/pet-friendly-cushions/) in the Atlas show more of those weaves.

> **Tailor's margin:** Judge a teal swatch twice in the hall where it will live: once in morning daylight, once under the evening bulbs.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a cushion sit on a radiator cover without trapping the heat?

Yes, as long as it stays on the lid. Cut it to the top only and keep it clear of the slatted front, which is where warm air leaves the cover. Choose a cushion light enough to lift so the radiator valves stay easy to reach.

### Why does a teal cushion look different in my hallway at night?

Most evening bulbs are warmer than daylight, and warm light pulls blue-greens toward green and darkens them. A hallway with little window light makes the shift stronger. Check your swatch in the hall under the bulbs you use, not only beside a sunny window.

### Does a hallway seat cushion need piping?

Not always. On a chunky, flecked weave like this teal, a plain rounded box edge suits the texture and reads softer. Piping earns its place on smooth fabrics and on long seats where you want a crisp front line.
