# A teal corduroy window seat cushion made for sitting sideways

*Nobody sits in a window seat the way the floor plan says. They sit sideways, knees up, a book propped on them, until somebody calls them for supper. This alcove was built for exactly that.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion for long reading should fill the alcove wall to wall on a firm box edge and get one firm pillow against the side wall instead of a row along the back, because deep seats get used sideways with feet up. Give your nook size in the unit you measured in, so nothing is lost to rounding.

## Buyer questions first: previews, parcels and a tricky corner

**A common question:** Could you send a rendering or mockup of my cushion so I can approve it before I buy?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop has offered a rendering once colors are chosen. More often it helps you picture the cushion with close-ups of your chosen codes side by side and photos of finished cushions. For large or color-critical projects, physical samples are the safer route.

**A common question:** My package came with the covers but no cushions inside. Are the inserts shipping separately?

**The workshop's answer:** Check the parcel again. Foam inserts are often vacuum-compressed straight into the covers, so the package looks like covers only. If the foam really is missing, the shop looks into it.

**A common question:** My corner window seat has little trim sections at both corners. Can the cushion extend onto them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, though it's a genuinely difficult piece, and the shop put its most experienced craftsman on it. Complex shapes like this are paid through a private purchase link made for your order, which works exactly like a normal checkout.

## How people really sit in a deep alcove

Pull up a chair, because this is my favorite kind of seat: the one a whole family is fighting over by the end of the first week.

Look at how it is built. An oak box sits deep in a white tongue-and-groove alcove, and the teal corduroy cushion runs from wall to wall with no gaps at the ends. That matters for long sitting. A gap at the wall is where a hip slides and a paperback disappears, and after an hour you notice every inch of it.

The seat is deep, so nobody sits facing the garden with a straight back for long. They swing their legs up and lean on the side wall. The styling gives exactly one firm ivory pillow, against that side wall, right where a back goes. A row of pillows along the window would steal the depth and push the reader forward. One pillow leaves the whole seat for the legs.

Corduroy is a sitting fabric. It is soft under bare feet on a cool morning, and the ribs make the teal look deeper where light rakes across them. The teal is the only color in the nook, set between honey oak below and white paneling above, so it reads fresh instead of heavy. More ribbed cloth lives in the [corduroy family](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), and the wale question is answered in [corduroy wale and nap direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/).

On the sill, a short row of books and a cream ceramic bud vase stay low, so the garden, the shed and the trellis stay in the picture. You came for the view, and the styling knows it. Seats like this one live with the [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) and the [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/).

Where does your family actually put their feet, neighbor?

## Pinned by Rosa

Five pins, from the single ivory pillow at the wall to the oak base that keeps the teal fresh.

1. **Single ivory pillow**: One firm pillow against the side wall gives a backrest without covering the seat.
2. **Books on the sill**: Low styling keeps the garden view open.
3. **Bud vase**: A cream ceramic matches the pillow and paneling.
4. **Teal front band**: The ribbed band is the only color between oak and white, so it reads crisp.
5. **Oak base**: Oak below and white above make the teal feel fresh rather than heavy.

## A nook measured in centimeters, and kept that way

A buyer wrote in with a window nook of about 34 1/4 x 28 3/8 in (87 x 72 cm). She changed her order to a cushion of about 33 7/8 x 28 in (86 x 71 cm), taking just under 3/8 in (1 cm) off each dimension so the piped cushion would slide in snug without buckling.

Then she told the workshop something I still repeat: her centimeter numbers were more accurate than any inches converted from them. Look at those fractions and you will see she was right. Every conversion rounds, and rounding twice, once into inches and once back, is how a snug nook ends up with a loose cushion.

So measure in whichever unit your tape reads best, and send those numbers exactly as you wrote them. The full method is in [how to measure a window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-window-seat-cushion/), and the room for error in [custom cushion size tolerance](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-size-tolerance/).

## Pillows along the back, or one at the end?

| Setup | How you end up sitting | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Row of pillows along the window | Upright, facing the room, knees over the edge | Shallow seats and short visits |
| One firm pillow at the side wall | Sideways, legs up along the seat | Deep alcoves and long reads |
| No pillow at all | Perched on the front edge | Hall benches and pulling on boots |

## On the cutting table: the garden alcove

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat box cushion, wall to wall |
| Fabric | Teal green corduroy |
| Piping | Self piping in teal |
| Base | Oak box seat in a tongue-and-groove alcove |
| Backrest | One firm ivory pillow against the side wall |
| Snug fit | About 3/8 in (1 cm) under the nook each way |
| Units | Order in the unit you measured in |
| Preview | Side-by-side swatch photos, or a rendering once colors are chosen |
| Best for | Deep reading nooks with a view |

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the nook in the unit your tape reads best and send those numbers untouched. Converting to inches and back again rounds twice.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a window seat cushion touch both walls of an alcove?

For long sitting, yes: run it wall to wall. Ordering it slightly under the nook size, about 3/8 in (1 cm) each way, lets a piped cushion slide in snugly without buckling while leaving no gap where hips slide or books fall.

### How many pillows does a deep window seat need?

Often just one. A deep seat gets used sideways with legs up, so a single firm pillow against the side wall supports the back. A row of pillows along the window takes up depth and pushes the reader forward.

### Should I send my nook measurements in inches or centimeters?

Send them in the unit you measured in. Each conversion rounds, and converting to inches and back can loosen a snug fit. One buyer's 34 1/4 x 28 3/8 in (87 x 72 cm) nook was ordered in centimeters for exactly that reason.
