# A teal diamond seat and split back on a rose arbor, read for weather

*A garden seat under a climbing rose gets dripped on long after the shower stops. Every choice in this set starts with what happens when it's wet.*

> **The quick answer:** For an outdoor bench cushion under a climbing rose, choose a plain, non-tufted seat with a zippered cover and split the back into two pads, so each lifts off to dry after rain. Tufting trades away the removable, washable cover, and outdoors a tufted cushion lets water in at the buttons. Store the set indoors off-season.

The teal kilim diamond runs across the seat and both back pads, so the set reads as one piece.")

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can the back cushion be only 1 to 1 1/2 in thick? My seat is shallow already.

**The workshop's answer:** The thinnest the workshop makes is 2 in (5 cm). Thinner foam loses its structure and flattens quickly against a backrest. At 2 in a back cushion stays supportive and takes very little depth off a 16 in (41 cm) seat; a foam-filled backrest is the better choice here.

**A common question:** Can you make an L-shaped bench cushion with a cutout in one corner?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a picture of the space with the sizes. One kitchen set was an 85 1/2 x 19 3/4 in (217 x 50 cm) cushion, a 27 1/2 x 19 3/4 in (70 x 50 cm) L-piece with a 4 3/8 x 20 7/8 in (11 x 53 cm) cutout, and five 11 3/4 x 19 3/4 in (30 x 50 cm) back cushions, all quoted as one set.

**A common question:** What size tolerance should I expect, and does the piping count in the width?

**The workshop's answer:** Handmade cushions and covers can vary by about 1/2 to 1 in (1 to 2 cm). Measure the cushion itself, not from the outer edge of the piping, which adds a little to the outer size. If an exact finished size matters, say the dimension must include the piping.

## Buttons or a zipper: one buyer's choice

A buyer had a small bench nook, 15 5/8 x 36 in (40 x 91 cm). They liked the button detail of a tufted cushion but wanted the piping from the plain bench cushion. Fair enough. Both look good.

The workshop explained the catch. Tufting buttons are stitched through the whole cushion, so a tufted cover can't come off and can't go in the washer. The buyer weighed that and accepted it.

They gave the exact size of the space, and the workshop said not to shave anything off, because sewing allowances are handled at the bench. The craftsmen chose how many buttons. The buyer chose the fabric, with dark navy piping over the mustard they had also considered.

Indoors, that [tufted or plain](https://cushionguide.com/guides/tufted-vs-plain-cushions/) trade is a matter of taste. Out under the roses, it isn't.

## Why this arbor set is plain, split and pale

Now the photograph. A sage-painted arbor with an arched top stands on old red brick in a walled garden, clipped yew hedges behind. Pink roses are trained over the arch. A lattice panel closes one side.

The seat pad fills the arbor side to side. Behind it, two back pads rest against the backrest instead of one long one. That's the weather decision. After a shower each pad lifts off on its own to dry, and nobody wrestles one long wet cushion out of a narrow arch.

No buttons, either. A plain [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) keeps its zippered cover, and outdoors a tufted cushion lets water in at the buttons. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract, and I don't sign that one for any cushion.

The teal and white diamond runs across all three pieces, so they read as one. Self piping cut from the same [outdoor fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) outlines the seat without breaking the repeat. Teal deepens the sage paint, and pink roses sit opposite teal on the color wheel, which keeps the print fresh rather than busy. Brick, hedge and wall are dark, so the pale cushion is the brightest thing in the frame. The lattice lets air move around it.

What does your garden bench sit under, friend: open sky, a porch roof, or a rose? More sheltered seats in [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/).

## Pinned by Callum

Five places where the garden decided the cushion.

1. **Self-piped seat edge**: Piping cut from the same teal kilim cloth outlines the seat without breaking the diamond repeat.
2. **Split back cushions**: Two loose back pads instead of one long one follow the arbor's width and lift off separately to dry.
3. **Lattice side panel**: The open lattice lets air move round the cushions in a sheltered, planted corner.
4. **Climbing pink roses**: Soft pink sits opposite teal on the color wheel, which is why the print looks fresh here rather than busy.
5. **Old brick paving**: Warm brick underfoot balances the cool teal and keeps the corner from feeling cold.

## What I keep off a garden bench

- ✗ Tufting. Water finds the buttons, and the cover can't come off.
- ✗ One long back pad under an arch. Two short ones lift out after rain.
- ✗ A back cushion thinner than 2 in (5 cm). It flattens and loses its shape.
- ✗ A winter outdoors. The set goes indoors in the off-season.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Set | One seat pad and two back pads |
| Fabric | Teal and white diamond outdoor fabric |
| Piping | Self piping from the same cloth |
| Edge | Box edge, no tufting |
| Back thickness | 2 in (5 cm) minimum |
| Tolerance | About 1/2 to 1 in (1 to 2 cm), handmade |
| Off-season | Stored indoors |
| Best for | Garden arbors and benches under climbers |

> **Tailor's margin:** On an outdoor bench, measure the cushion itself, not the outer edge of the piping; handmade cushions can vary by about 1/2 to 1 in.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can outdoor bench cushions be tufted?

They can be made, but the workshop advises against it. A tufted cushion lets water in at the buttons even in outdoor fabric, and its cover can't be removed for washing. Plain foam cushions with zippered covers suit a garden better.

### Should garden bench cushions stay out after rain?

Lift them off and let them dry with air on all sides. Outdoor fabric is water-repellent, not waterproof, so a soaked cushion needs time. Split back pads make that job quicker than one long cushion.

### Where should outdoor cushions spend the winter?

Indoors, dry and out of the frost. Store the set in the off-season, and treat the fabric with a protectant spray before it goes back out in spring.
