# One taupe stripe, seven pieces: outdoor cushions that make a narrow patio feel generous

*An ordinary backyard, a strip of pavers between the siding and the lawn, and a set of cushions doing all the heavy lifting.*

> **The quick answer:** To make a small patio feel bigger, cover every seat, back and ottoman in one outdoor stripe and run it the same way on every piece: top to bottom on backs, front to back on seats. The eye then reads one calm set instead of seven separate cushions. Order every size together so all pieces are cut from the same roll.

![Ivory and taupe striped outdoor cushions on a black metal sofa, two armchairs and two ottomans on a backyard paver patio](https://cushionguide.com/media/outdoor-cushions/taupe-stripe-backyard-patio-set-sofa-ottoman-cushions-1600.webp "One stripe across a sofa, two armchairs and two ottomans ties a whole backyard set together.")

## A patio the width of a hose reel

Seven cushions, one stripe, and a backyard nobody would call special. That's the whole trick, friend, and it's a good one.

Look at what this patio has to hold: a black metal sofa, two armchairs, two ottomans and a dark slatted coffee table, all on a strip of pavers between the siding and the grass. There's a hose reel by the wall, a wooden privacy fence, steps up to a back deck. Flat overcast light. No stylist would pick this yard, which is exactly why I trust it.

The cushions do the work. Every seat, back and ottoman top wears the same ivory-and-taupe stripe, box-edged, piped in its own fabric, cut to the metal frames. On the three sofa backs the stripe runs top to bottom. On the seats it runs front to back. Stand where the camera stands and the lines carry from one piece to the next, so seven cushions read as one set.

## Pinned by Callum: where the stripe does the work

Five pins, from the three sofa backs to the red geraniums that are the only loud thing on the patio.

1. **Sofa back cushions**: Three backs share one stripe direction, running top to bottom.
2. **Ottoman tops**: The same fabric on ottomans makes a mixed set look intentional.
3. **Armchair set**: Seat and back cushions cut to the metal frame.
4. **Geraniums on table**: The single strong color on a neutral patio.
5. **Back deck steps**: An everyday backyard, showing the set in real use.

## Three rules for a narrow patio

Small outdoor spaces go wrong the same way: too many pieces, too many fabrics, every chair shouting its own color. The fix here is plain discipline.

**One fabric for everything.** The ottomans could have gone bare or worn something else. Instead they carry the same stripe, so a mixed set looks planned, and they can double as extra seats when the neighbors wander over.

**Pale on dark.** Black frames draw a crisp outline around the light fabric, so the eye reads the cushions first and the clutter second.

**One strong color, once.** Red geraniums in a terracotta pot sit on the table. The small metal lantern, the gray outdoor rug and the hostas along the house all stay quiet. Where would your one loud color go?

Recovering a whole set? List every cushion size in one order so all the pieces come off the same roll. Our notes on [stripe direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) and the [outdoor acrylic swatches](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) are the places to start, and the [patio set cushion refresh](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/patio-set-cushion-refresh/) sketch walks a full set through.

## Twenty feet of curve, cut into four

A buyer in the US measured a curved stone bench around a fire pit with a piece of string. Good instinct. Not enough numbers.

The shop asked for the inner curve, the outer curve, the depth at several points and the straight end-to-end distances: 142 in (361 cm) across the back, 117 in (297 cm) across the front. From those it drew the shape: a 245 in (622 cm) outer curve, a 208 in (528 cm) inner curve, 12 3/4 in (32 cm) deep and 3 in (7.5 cm) thick.

At about 20 ft (6 m) long, one piece would be a sail you can't fold. So it became four symmetrical segments, easy to carry in and store when the season turns, in an outdoor fabric in a heather beige tone. Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a 20-foot cushion on a wet night. For curves, give both arc lengths and the straight chord; the [chord and rise guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/curved-cushion-chord-rise-radius/) and our [fire-pit bench sketches](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/fire-pit-bench-cushions/) show how.

## Buyer questions: water-repellent outdoor fabric, small boxes and covers only

**A common question:** Do you make waterproof outdoor cushions? I'd like to try one on my patio before ordering the rest.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Water-repellent outdoor fabric has its own color chart. You can order a single cushion first to check the fit; in one case that meant 5 days of production and 3-4 days of delivery.

**A common question:** The box that arrived looks far too small for my cushions. Is something missing?

**The workshop's answer:** Probably not. Cushions are vacuum-sealed, so the parcel looks small, and they expand to full size once opened. Accept the delivery, and if anything is missing the workshop sends a replacement.

**A common question:** Will I save a lot if I order covers only and reuse my old foam?

**The workshop's answer:** Not much. Most of the cost and craftsmanship is in the custom cover, so leaving out the foam barely lowers the price. The workshop recommends the full set so fit, texture and look all match.

> When every patio cushion shares one stripe, running top to bottom on backs and front to back on seats, a crowded set of seven reads as one piece.

> **Tailor's margin:** If you recover a whole patio set, list every cushion size in one order, so seats, backs and ottoman tops are cut from the same roll.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which way should stripes run on outdoor seat and back cushions?

In this set the stripes run top to bottom on the backs and front to back on the seats, so they line up across the sofa, armchairs and ottomans. Pick one rule and apply it to every piece in the order.

### Should ottoman cushions match the patio sofa?

On a mixed set, yes. Using the same stripe on the ottoman tops as on the sofa and chairs makes separate pieces look like one planned group, which matters most when the patio is narrow.

### How do you store a very long outdoor bench cushion?

Split it. A curved fire-pit bench cushion about 20 ft (6 m) long was made as four symmetrical segments, so each piece could be carried and stored on its own.
