# A tabby asleep on denim-blue pebble weave, and how to measure the seat it sleeps on

*Hana reads a close-up that is mostly cat, then walks through the measurements people get wrong on the seat a pet actually uses.*

> **The quick answer:** For a pet friendly cushion, choose a tight raised weave in a mid-tone near the pet's coat, so fur rests on top and shows less. Then measure the bare seat deck, not the old cushion: width between the arms at front and back, depth to the front edge, and thickness. Order the color by its fabric code, since there are several whites and blues.

## Pinned by Hana: four points on one arm

Four pins, from the cat's whiskers to the matching sofa behind it.

1. **Tabby cat face**: Whiskers and fur lift off the pebbles instead of weaving into them.
2. **Pebble weave close**: The raised dots are tight enough that claws skim rather than snag.
3. **Rounded cushion roll**: The same weave wraps a soft curved form without puckering.
4. **Matching sofa**: The fabric used across a whole sofa, not just a single cushion.

## What a tight frame says about fur and fabric

The photo is cropped close. Cat and fabric share the frame almost half and half. That is the answer to the first thing pet owners ask: what will happen to the cushion.

Look at the whiskers. They lie on the pebbles, not between them. The raised dots are packed tight, so hair rests on the surface, where a lint roller or a damp hand lifts it. At the lower right, the weave is close enough that claws tend to skim rather than catch.

Above the cat's head, the same weave wraps a rounded roll without puckering. Behind, the whole sofa wears it. One fabric everywhere, so nothing looks like a patch.

Denim blue beside a tabby is a quiet choice. Brown and gray fur disappears more on a mid-tone than on white or black. Soft side light shows the texture without glare, and the pale rug and wood floor stay out of focus, where they belong.

Fabrics that behave like this sit in our [performance and pet-friendly fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/), and more seats shared with animals are among the [pet-friendly cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/pet-friendly-cushions/). The [pet-friendly fabric Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/pet-friendly-cushion-fabric/) compares weaves side by side. What color is the animal on your sofa?

## Measuring the seat a pet actually sleeps on

1. **Take the old cushion off**: Measure the bare seat deck. A worn cushion has slumped and crowned, and a tape laid over it reads a size that is not there.
2. **Width at the front, and again at the back**: Arms are not always parallel. Measure between them at the front edge and at the back. If the numbers differ, write both.
3. **Decide where the depth stops**: From the back cushion to the front edge, or from the back frame if the topper tucks under. Choose one and say which.
4. **Choose thickness by feel**: Height is a feeling. On one listing 2, 3, 4 and 5 in are standard and 6 in is made on request. A topper over an existing seat usually wants the thinner end.
5. **Name the color by its code**: There are several whites and several blues. Hold the swatch against the pet's coat, then write the code, not the color name.
6. **Let new foam rise before judging it**: Foam packed for shipping needs time to recover. Measure the new cushion after that, not on the first evening.

## A white topper that looked short on day one

A busy buyer wrote to the workshop wanting a flat, lightly quilted white topper for a long sofa: 89 x 24 in (226 x 61 cm), medium fill.

The workshop pointed them to its sofa topper listing and said plainly that the real finish is flatter than a heavy quilted look. Then it asked for one thing: which white. There is more than one. They settled on code DRB35, and the workshop set up an order link with every choice already filled in.

It arrived. They loved it, and how fast it came. At first it seemed a little short. The workshop put that down to foam still expanding. The [first 72 hours Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/vacuum-packed-cushion-first-72-hours/) explains the wait.

Several whites.
One code.
Time for the foam.

## Buyer questions: boxes, thickness and timing

**A common question:** One box from my order hasn't arrived, and tracking says it's lost. What happens now?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop opens a case with the carrier, UPS or FedEx, and follows it up every day. If the carrier confirms the loss, the missing parts are sent again. Where a carrier paid compensation for a lost box, the workshop refunded the rest of the order.

**A common question:** Which thicknesses can I choose, and does a thicker cushion cost more?

**The workshop's answer:** You pick thickness when ordering: 2 in (5 cm), 3, 4 and 5 in are standard, 2.5 in has been made on request, and 6 in is possible if you write it in the personalization box and message after ordering. On that listing the price stays the same for every thickness. Beside a dining table, 2 or 3 in are the popular picks.

**A common question:** How long does a made-to-measure cushion take to reach me?

**The workshop's answer:** Production time depends on the order. Delivery follows dispatch. Ask the workshop for both in writing.

## On the cutting table: the pebble-weave arm

| | |
|---|---|
| Subject | Close-up of an upholstered sofa arm and cushion roll |
| Fabric | Denim-blue performance weave with a raised pebble surface |
| Piping | None |
| Surface | Tight raised dots; fur rests on top |
| Color logic | A mid-tone close to a tabby's coat |
| Thickness | 2, 3, 4 or 5 in standard on one listing; 6 in on request |
| Order by | Fabric code, never by 'white' or 'blue' |
| Best for | Living-room seats shared with a cat or dog |

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the bare seat deck, not the old cushion on it. Write the front width and the back width; sofa arms are not always parallel.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does pet fur show less on a mid-tone fabric?

Brown and gray fur contrasts less with a mid-tone like denim blue than with white or black. Holding a swatch against your pet's coat before ordering is the quickest test.

### Does a raised pebble weave help with cat hair?

In this close-up it does: the dots are packed tight, so hair rests on top instead of working into the weave, and it lifts off with a lint roller or a damp hand.

### Should I measure my old sofa cushion or the sofa itself?

The sofa. An old cushion has crowned and slumped, and a tape laid over its curve reads wrong. Measure the bare seat deck between the arms, at the front and again at the back.

### Why does a new topper look a little short out of the box?

Foam compressed for shipping takes time to recover. One buyer's 89 x 24 in topper seemed short at first, and the workshop put it down to foam still expanding. Measure again once it has fully risen.
